Game of Thrones 5.05 "Kill the Boy" 5/10/15 [Show Discussion]

Plus it took up maybe 2 seconds in a scene, yeah, real waste of time that was. They could have used that time to resolve like 8 different plots!

I don’t remember any particular Catelyn/Jaime incidents?

If Disney had done GOT:

They appear in plenty of HBO and others’ publicity for it. If we’re going to be using the names here, why not spell them correctly? Fighting ignorance and all that.

Based on prior posts, it sounds like people are assuming that Dany can’t have any real children. Is that a fact, or just assumed? Perhaps I missed something.

Also, someone mentioned only one more season after this one. Is that also stated anywhere?

There’s ignorance and then there’s ignorance. “John Snow” versus “Jon Snow” feels like the latter.

What I found is from Vanity Fair magazine, “[Co-creator David] Benioff and co-creator D. B. Weiss tell [Vanity Fair contributing editor Jim] Windolf that the show has a lifespan, and they would like to wrap it up after seven or eight seasons.” Note that the VF article openly refers to That Which Does Not Exist.

On the other hand, I think HBO would like to milk this for as long as possible.

Catelyn released Jaime, undermining Robb’s war effort. His release let to Karstark killing other Lannister captives, which lead to Robb beheading Karstark, which led to Robb’s army abandoning him, which led to Robb getting beheaded and having his wolf’s head sown to his corpse to be paraded around in front of his sister.

JJ, the witch that killed Drogo told Dany she wouldn’t have any more kids in season 1. I’m not sure how reliable she is, but I imagine Daario is raw dogging her 8 times a day so we should find out soon enough.

We know that her one pregnancy (by Khal Drogo) ended in something monstrous, but that may have been the result of magical meddling. But it’s strongly implied (or maybe just something I inferred) that since she can’t be the mother to any humans, she will be the Mother of Dragons.

Catelyn was absolutely awful to Jon. She’s not her son, but that doesn’t justify the hatred and shittiness she inflicted on him all his life. Plenty of mothers have treated their husband’s children - their children’s half-siblings - as their own child, or at least not horribly. How she made Jon’s life shitty because of her anger towards her husband is one of the most undernoticed/underrated character shittiness in the whole story.

I don’t think the show itself ignored it. Catelyn herself once said that she was being punished because she couldn’t give live to a motherless child.

Wait, you were actually serious about the name thing? holy shit.

I was passing time at work rewatching the series from the beginning and noticed a few things.

Stannis corrects Davos on the use of fewer vs less in season 2. Stannis is asking Davos if he, Davos, resents him, Stannis, for taking his fingers in punishment for smuggling, even though the smuggling Davos did saved Stannis’s life. Davos is stoic about it, reminding Stannis that while the punishment was indeed harsh it was just and Davos’s life has improved greatly since then, thanks to Stannis. He then cheerfully remarks about having four less fingernails to clean, and Stannis the stickler growls back “Fewer!” Because correcting the grammar of your greatest fan is more important than sharing a human moment, apparently.
Like when Stannis was having his scribe write a letter about Cersei and Jaime’s incest and had the scribe take out ‘beloved’ brother referring to Robert. And add kingslayer to Jaime’s name, but also add Ser to it, to give Jaime the credit he’s due. Stannis sees himself as ruthlessly honest and it was a nice little throwback to see him still fighting the good grammar fight years later.

Also, Osha the wildling comments about getting potatoes quickly to the cook lest she be put back in chains in season 1. We could have had the potato tangent years earlier! :smack:

I know, right! They’re just names on a tv show. Who gives a shit how they’re spelled!

I’m with Stannis on this one; proper spelling is appropriate.

Oh, okay. I wasn’t thinking of ‘indirect’ impacts for some reason.

Where are you getting that idea? I haven’t seen any such suggestion in the show.

Okay, listen up. This is a HUGE spoiler that happens in the books but has not happened in the show yet. DO NOT post these things in the TV show threads. Post anything that happens IN THE BOOKS in those threads.

Secondly, if you’re going to post something that is a big spoiler, use the spoiler tag. A lot of people in these threads have not read the books, so try to be considerate.

I have put a spoiler tag on your post this time. Please do it yourself before you post spoilers of this magnitude. Even just hinting at them counts.

It would be better if that were deleted, and not spoiler boxed, as the way we’ve run these threads is that there are no spoilers, even in spoiler boxes. Otherwise we run the risk of having several different discussions at once, with half of them spoiler boxed and off-limits to who want to participate in the thread without spoilers. To allow spoiler-boxed spoilers invites a mess.

To expand upon that: People will play it safe and tend to over-spoiler box content and not label it very well, which will cause people to potentially venture in to spoiler boxes without knowing what they’re getting into exactly, dramatically increasing the chance of legitimately being spoiled. It makes it hard to keep track of discussion threads with differing degrees of spoiler content as well. In general, the idea would potentially be a huge mess, and we’ve always run the threads with no spoiler boxes for book content. That content would still have a home in the open spoilers thread.

Yeah that whole 2 seconds it took out of the episode could have used for… What exactly?

On the show we never really saw her be terrible terrible to Jon… She’s a dick to him when he goes to see Bran but it doesn’t seem like she goes out of her way to be cruel. I kind of imagine she largely didn’t acknowledge his existence at all in the day to day life at Winterfell. Jon doesn’t get to sit at the big table at the solstice feast and he doesn’t get name day presents but she doesn’t make him eat glass.
I forget if she gives details in her speech about it… but even in that speech doesn’t she talk about how she took care of him when he was sick and prayed for him to survive and if he did she’d accept him… and he did and she didn’t and still feels guilty about it.
