So I’m staying in a hotel on business this week and last night I flicked past Game of Thrones and decided to watch the whole thing. Here’s the deal, though; a bit ago, I watched the first seven episodes of the series, and then got distracted and never saw any more. I’ve seen no spoilers since, and certainly never read any of the books or anything.
So… some shit has gone down hasn’t it? I have so many questions I can’t even begin to ask them all, and now I obviously have to go back and watch the whole series from episode 8 on. What the hell happened to all the Starks?
It just occurred to me how these two characters now embody the things they hated at the start of the show.
Remember how much Sansa despised two faced schemers? Remember how Theon despised servants and weakness, threatening to rape the wildling woman before the maester told him to knock it off?
These are no longer spoilers under the rules of this thread, but just in case you weren’t actually looking for an answer.
Neddard— beheaded by order of Joffrey at the end of Season 1
Catelyn and Robb— betrayed and murdered by Roose Bolton and Walder Frey while attending the wedding of Catelyn’s brother to Frey’s daughter
Sansa — betrothed and then unbetrothed to Joffrey. Married to Tyrion. Helped to flee Kings Landing by Petyr Baelish after Joffery’s poisoning at his wedding to Margaery Tyrell. Betrothed to Ramsey Bolton.
Arya— fled to Braavos to learn to become a Faceless Man
Bran — with the Three-Eyed Raven far north of the Wall with Hodor and Jojen and Meera Reed
Rickon — sent into hiding with Osha with the family of Jojen and Meera Reed
Beric has blood that lit on fire. The sword was just a sword. Note how the Hound’s killing blow broke Beric’s sword in half, implying that setting the sword on fire weakened and ruined the blade. Thoros of Myr had the same problem with all the swords he set on fire while in Robert’s court.
That seems a bit optimistic for GoT. More likely that Theon fakes friendship with Sansa on Ramsey’s orders, telling her the truth about Bran and Rickon. Sansa tells Theon about the candle scheme so that he can do it for her, and Theon spills the beans to Ramsey who uses the candle to lure Brienne and Pod into the castle. Extended torture scenes in the crypts of Winterfell, Ramsey delighted with his new toy in Brienne and forcing Theon and Sansa to watch. Finally Ramsay gets around to giving Podrick the Theon treatment, only for the entire group to fall into stunned silence when jealous torture helper girl undoes Pod’s sword-belt. Theon goes into a full psychotic break both at the loss of his, uh, membership, and the realization that he couldn’t measure up even when he had it. Brienne breaks loose in the ensuing chaos and rips Ramsey’s arms off, feeding him piece by piece to his hounds. Sansa slips away and opens a secret Stark entry to Stannis, who jams Lightbringer hilt-deep in Roose Bolton’s chest, saying, “Jon Snow sends his regards.”
That’s what I though; Daenerys is barren so to produce any heirs she’d have to go the “offer her handmaid to husband” route.
It was fewer.
What exactly is going to be Hizdahr’s role in this marriage? In Westeros the rule of Jure uxoris seems to apply, but I doubt Daenerys is going to share any real power with her king consort.
Does a legitimated bastard take precedence over his younger, but trueborn brother? It could be that trueborn sons still take priority. Either way Ramsay still get’s to be Lord-Consort of Winterfell (at least until Sansa kills him ;)).
Well I suppose Reek could serve as a fluffer, for both spouses. I was sure that scene with Ramsery making Reek kneel was going to go a different way.
So there isn’t a Facebook recap up yet, which is a bit odd–it’s usually up by Tuesday evening. Instead we’ve got… this recap (warning: NSFW language), which has its moments, but is not the Facebook recap. I’m a bit worried they’ll look at the share numbers and decide we don’t get Facebook recaps any more. FUCK!
(a) they’re not in Westeros. They’re in a city state which until recently has been ruled by a vaguely defined aristocracy of powerful families, not royalty at all
(b) who knows what his role will be? Let’s watch and find out. Maybe this will turn out to be a disastrous mistake, but (i) people making disastrous mistakes isn’t a plot hole, it’s something that happens in real life all the time, even to very smart people, and (ii) maybe it will work out just fine, with Dany (obviously) keeping overall power, but delegating certain tasks to Hizdahr, publicly showing trust in him, etc., helping to bring the city together
I haven’t looked at the map on this site for quite some time. I am glad that the creator of the map worked out the many bugs that existed when it first was released. It used to freeze or crash for me all the time.
I especially like being able to trace the routes of the characters as they progress through the story.
Another good episode. I’m really enjoying this season. The ruins of Valyria were quite well-done. Seeing Drogon overhead was awesome, and I loved the creepy shot of the out-of-focus Stone Man in the background dropping into the canal over Tyrion’s shoulder. Great line by Tyrion earlier: “Long sullen silences and the occasional punch in the face: the Mormont Way.”
The scene with Stannis and Sam in the library was nice. “Keep reading, Samwell!” said the king. For all his many faults, he really is concerned with ruling well and protecting the realm.
The inn servant to whom Brienne spoke looked familiar. Have we seen him before?
Spelling reminder: it’s Jon (not John) Snow.
Oh, yeah, you and me both. Payback is gonna be (or at least should be) a bitch, for all that Ramsay has put Theon through.
I couldn’t understand what he said when I heard it. Thanks! Good line.
Just like fusion power!
All good questions. He would do well to remember what happened to his predecessor.
Could be a Pompeii analogue, I suppose, but I always had the impression that it was some kind of terrible citywide catastrophe of magic gone wrong, like a wizarding Chernobyl.
Even better than Tyrion repeatedly slapping Joffrey?
Yes. Fat Lady Bolton had better watch her back - and her belly.
Selyse on being a good mother: “Ser Davos, stop scaring my daughter with innocuous talk about a battle. She needs to spend more time watching me burn people alive”
Dany is an awful mother. She ignored and didn’t train her dragons until one of them killed someone and then she punishes the two that didn’t eat a child.
This ep was modestly more interesting than many during this season, but by only a bit. This season is still lagging overall.
I was somewhat amused by the Stannis “fewer” bit, but I found it more frustrating than anything. They took time to set up and carry out some grammar snark that they could have used for a lot of other stuff. It also didn’t seem pertinent to Stannis’ character. Is he supposed to be kingly, or is he a nerd muttering under his breath about trivial grammar shit?
Ultimately it seemed like a writer getting a zinger in.
As a tangent, why all the name-spelling corrections in these threads? The names don’t appear in the show.
One site that was recapping the episode suggested, perhaps jokingly, that this was an example of him being a stickler for the rules. (Remember also that Davos lost four fingers as punishment for smuggling.)
