Game of Thrones 5.05 "Kill the Boy" 5/10/15 [Show Discussion]

Clever solution, well done.

Ramsey dies?

I think we’re all assuming he’s going to die eventually. Of course, it may turn out that he ends up sitting on the Iron Throne several seasons from now, with Reek hovering around him, still brainwashed. The writers of the show seem to like not giving characters the punishment they deserve.

Dewey Finn, which character do you think didn’t get the punishment they deserve? Joffrey? Tywin?

Perhaps it’s more accurate to say that the writers tend to subvert expectations.

Missed the edit window. But I agree. Joffrey got off easy considering all that he has done. Tywin’s death was at least more satisfying and felt like poetic justice (though I like his character).

Joffrey’s death was nicely public. Not as painful as he deserved, given how much pain he inflicted. But still.

The only sea way to Mereen is either around the smoking islands or through them. Through was shorter and had no pirates. Still a bad idea though.
Stannis is a good man but too inflexible to make a good king. A king needs to know how to keep every one happy and at peace. Stannis is just not likeable enough to inspire any personal loyalty to him.
How is Jon Snow confirmed Targaryean? I did not get that.
I’m thinking Ramsay will make a good sacrifice to the lord of light.
Sansa needs Littlefinger, with her looks and name and his cunning they could rule Westeros together. Without him she seems way out of her depth. I keep waiting for the dime to drop for her but nothing yet.

I can’t find the quote right now, but I remember C.S. Lewis writing once that a greedy, selfish tyrant would be less dangerous than an idealistic one. A greedy one may eventually amass enough gold, a gluttonous one may be sated occasionally. At those times, they can relax and leave everyone around them alone for a while. But an idealistic tyrant will NEVER be satisfied until everything is exactly as he/she believes they should be, and will never suffer any pangs of conscience. After all, his/her enemies are EVIL, and DESERVE whatever they get!

Dany is dangerous, PARTLY because she has her Dad’s genes, and partly because she believes she has truth, justice and righteousness wholly on her side.

I don’t see any reason to believe that Daenerys has neglected to train her dragons. We have seen then respond to voice commands after all.

Mate she has reached the limit of how much training can be done without the help of expertise. And I haven’t seen any evidence that dragon experts are around.

In Dany’s defense she does have truth, justice and righteousness wholly on her side compared to the slave empires she is toppling(assuming slavery in Meeren is as bad the place she got her unsullied army from). The bald guy she had the dragon torch told her only a percentage of unsullied survive childhood, thats aside from the baby killing and wanton torture and death.
Now how badly she messes up Westeros in her conquest has yet to be seen.

Apart from the Onion Knight, you mean? And he managed to get an army to follow him to Blackwater Bay… didn’t turn out too well for them, but they were fighting for him.

The Onion knight was a smuggler from a slum, he turned him into a lord and made him his right hand man. That is not something he can do for everyone. As head of the Baratheon family he had the right to lead that family’s banner men into war. However, Renly had a bigger army even though he wasn’t the rightful heir so his army was fighting for the family and not fro Stannis. No other families except the supported his claim to the throne and they still have not. At least Rob tried to enlist other families support in the war. Tywin was able to lose almost every battle and still win the war because he was able to enlist the help of other families.

I think that’s plays into the difference.

Stannis isn’t charismatic so people aren’t going to flock to him. But he’s the kind of leader that if you look at objectively and intellectually you say “oh yeah, he’s the guy.”
That was kind of the crux of Davos’ speech to the Iron Bank, wasn’t it? They look at facts and figures and on paper who is the person best suited to lead Westeros? Stannis.
Ideally he needs a charismatic queen (a Margery type) but he’s saddled with… what he has. And Davos being his Hand is helpful but not necessarily enough.

Ultimately, if we’re predicting… While Stannis has his flaws, he’s too “good” for this world and will ultimately be betrayed or die heroically paving the way for a next generation leader–All signs point to Jon.

I watch with subtitles. The names are there.

Where are you in the Agents of SHIELD thread? :p:D

“Dany” slightly annoys me. No one on the show has ever called her that.

Didn’t her brother call her that?

It seems to be a widespread nickname among GOT fans, so I’m cool with it.

Just saw this 2000 Irish short film (just 11 minutes long), The Second Death, with three future GOT stars in it. Enjoy: Вторая смерть / The Second Death (John Michael McDonagh) - YouTube
