Game of Thrones 6.02 "Home" 5/1/16 [Show discussion]

Gee, great. I do love getting spoiled for movies that aren’t legally available for streaming, rental, download or cable yet just because it’s a “meme.” I put that in scare quotes because I haven’t seen it anywhere else; only in this completely unrelated thread. So I’m skeptical of its ubiquity.

It should have been put in a spoiler box.

You’re right I just checked it again, the entry point was quite close to the armpit and there was a double movement by Ramsay, the initial thrust then an upward thrust. So going in between the ribs and then thrusting into the heart was plausible.

I’ve read, in credible places - accounts of Special Forces training, for example - that a knife to the kidney does result in instant and usually silent death.

Here is an SDMB thread that discusses the subject.

Here we go again.

It is basically animism. It’s not paganism, since it doesn’t recognize a pantheon of gods, but rather innumerable spirits of every rock and tree.
the Seven has parallels to pantheistic religions where there were different Gods for different aspects of life,
As described in GoT, like Christianity it is technically monotheistic, with seven “aspects” of a single god, parallel to the Trinity in Christianity, where there are three aspects of a single god. It does, however, lack a Redeemer figure as in Christianity.
and the Lord of Light always seemed to me to be a direct allusion to Christianity. It’s the monotheistic religion of ‘light’, complete with resurrection powers. I have heard Christians in the past describe God as “The Lord of Light” as compared to Satan, the King of Darkness.
No, it’s not monotheistic but dualistic, like Zoroastrianism. From the Wiki:

I can’t recall a supernatural result produced by calling on the Seven. However, that does not mean the Seven is a false god.

As Ascenray has said, Martin’s religions have parallels to religions in our world but are not intended to represent any specific religion.

An appalling number of characters at this point have died at the hands of (or with the complicity of) relatives either by blood or marriage (of course several marriages were for a matter of hours), especially since kinslaying is regarded as a particularly heinous crime.

Viserys Targaryon (brother-in-law)
Robert Baratheon (wife’s cousin)
Renly Baratheon (brother)
Joffrey Baratheon (grandmother-in-law)
Shireen Baratheon (father and mother)
Robb Stark (uncle’s father-in-law)
Catelyn Stark (brother’s father-in-law)
Joyeuse Frey (son-in-law’s sister)
Alton Lannister (cousin)
Tywin Lannister (son)
Lysa Arryn (husband)
Balon Greyjoy (brother)
Doran Martell (brother’s babymama)
Trystane Martell (cousins)
Roose Bolton (son)
Walda Bolton (stepson)
Roose Bolton Jr. (half-brother)

I’ve probably overlooked a couple.

Of course, the nobility is intertwined enough that every killing of one nobleman/woman by another is likely to have them at least be as closely related as somebody is to their uncle’s father-in-law, e.g.

its not shown going in, but you see him pull the knife out. When he pulls it out it comes out like it was a stomach thrust, but its also in a spot (under the rib cage, near center) that could easily reach the heart. If anyone in this show knows how to find the heart with a knife thrust it would be Ramsey.

Yes; I’m especially looking forward to Ser Robert Strong (formerly Gregor Clegane) getting killed by his brother.

Rekilled.

Is killing kin regarded as a particularly heinous crime in the show? It doesn’t seem like it considering how common it is, how little people comment about it, and how few people are punished for it. I don’t recall it being talked about very much either, but maybe I’m just not remembering it.

Tyrion is the only one I recall that faced a trial and punishment.

As a mod:

I have edited all of your posts to include a spoiler box since it has (or quotes) in them something that is a pretty huge spoiler. Please do not post or quote things like this unless they are spoiled or unless the title has “spoilers” somewhere in the title. As this thread wasn’t even about Star Wars, I wouldn’t expect a spoiler warning in the title, but the same sort of common sense rules apply when dealing with a large reveal from a movie that is still fairly new and that not many have seen yet.

As a poster:

I have not yet seen the movie in question and now it’s spoiled for me. Sucks to be a mod sometimes, I guess.

I wonder if the Freys will want an investigation. They’ll probably at least want their dowry (Walda’s weight in silver) back.

I’ve been thinking about how to respond to this and I can’t come up with anything other than “sorry,” and that its rather an irony since the exact same thing happened to me on these boards just s couple of months ago.

Nitpick; the title “Angel of Light” refers to Lucifer, aka Satan (II Corinthians 11:14), and believers are sometimes referred to as “children of light” (cf. Luke 16:8, John 12:36, Ephesians 5:8); but I know of no Biblical reference that refers to God as “The Lord of Light.” Which is not to say that there are no Christians who may have (confusingly, IMO) appropriated the term to describe God.

And of course, although Satan is called the Angel of Light in scripture, in popular culture and tradition he has also long been known as the Prince of Darkness despite that term not appearing in the bible (to my knowledge).

The High Sparrow reminded me of Girolamo Savonarola, a priest during the Renaissance who preached against the excesses of the nobles and destroyed secular art.

I’m not saying you are wrong, but positing you are right, it seems to me it’s very tough to remain ‘unsullied’ for so long. My casual unfocused viewing of the internet in the last 4 months has exposed me to multiple spoilers of that movie scene.

It would be an interesting thread topic (which I’m sure has been done) on what’s a reasonable amount of time to be able to remain unspoiled about such a blockbuster in our culture.

With the death of Roose, Tywin, and to some extent Stannis, there’s a dearth of rational, yet calculating antagonists on this show. Hopefully someone new steps up, because those characters were a lot more fun to watch.

Yes! Exactly the one who was not coming to the top of my tongue.
