Game of Thrones 6.10 "The Winds of Winter" 6/26/16 [Show discussion]

We’ll be getting something more like a typical full television season, instead of the shortened ones we’ve been having.

But… over 2 years? And the clock starts now, not when the next season starts. So if the series finale is 2 years from now instead of 1, I’d call that 2 short seasons instead of 1 “split season”, however they choose to label it.

Are the wildfire caches common knowledge? IIRC Brienne seems genuinely shocked when Jaime tells her about it, likewise Dany hasn’t heard of it when Tyrion jogs our memory of it so.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s out of character for her to make a power grab but I think it’s a rather gaping flaw in her plan that she’s not set up a fall guy and people are going to look for someone to blame. Hopefully next season we see the consequences of a 0% approval rating rather than just wait for Dany to overthrow her. After all, we’ve seen the consequences of what happens when the peasantry gets pissed off, they rip High Septons apart, they storm the dragonpits, they…throw cow pies.

Ha, wonder what Tywin would make of all this. I miss Charles Dance. Gonna miss Natalie Dormer too, not only is the woman sex on legs but she’s a great actress too, was rather hoping that she would get out and have a kind of rival Queendom going on with Cersei.

Euron intended to marry danaerys to rule over Westeros. This option is out. So, the other option is to marry Cersei to rule over Westeros.

Anyway, Dany made an alliance with Yara with the stated intent to overthrow him. So, it’s not like he can afford to let Danaerys win. His only option is to fight along with Cersei.

Why not? They’re now vassals of the Freys. The lords of the North supported the Boltons/Lannisters, why wouldn’t the lords of the Riverlands support the Frey/Lannister?

Nobody cares about what Edmure intends to do. Although there might be a redemption arc for him.

I’m convinced he will end up killing his sister, but meanwhile, I could see him still serving her out of love despite what happened.

Why would that option be out? Just because Theon and Yara got to her first to tell her about Euron’s plan doesn’t mean she can’t still decide to ally with and/or marry him. She said herself that she’s open to the possibility of a strategic marriage, and if Theon and/or Yara made it difficult she could easily eliminate them (and even still keep their ships). She doesn’t owe them anything.

Note that I’m not saying this is what she’ll do (probably not), but there’s no reason that she couldn’t. It would probably only happen if for some reason things aren’t going her way (disaster and other unexpected losses) and she decides she really needs his magically-assembled fleet.

Me too. I watch this clip whenever I’m feeling that way.

Are there any Freys left? Why wouldn’t the Tullys now go take Riverrun back, and the Frey’s place (Twin Towers?) back as well?

There are lots of Freys left. Walder had dozens of children

There are lots of Freys left, question is how many there will be once they’re done stabbing each other in the back over who gets to be the next Lord Frey

Nothing about the way Dany’s character as it has been presented over 6 seasons suggests that she would go back on the agreement she made with Yara (with meaningful arm clasp, no less!) in order to subjugate herself to a man like Euron. At best she might have Grey Worm stab Euron in the face and take his thousand ships. But to work with him? To marry him? To betray Yara? To let Euron think even for a second that he was in charge? No way. Everything we know about Dany makes such a thing functionally impossible.

please briefly describe your dream job

Yara told Dany that Euron’s first order of business after the victory would be to kill her and seize power for himself, and Dany’s speech about men that left the world in the shape it’s in now, can’t see her even considering Euron a prospect. I still think that he’s right up the coast a bit, ready to attack Dany’s armada in the opening sequence of S7 or something. No way she lands with 100% of her forces intact.

It’s not strictly a naval fight when only one side has air support.

Also, it won’t strictly be a fight when the side without air power is so … flammable.

What] magic protection? Was this spelled out and I missed it? I thought it just let him see where Bran was?

The wights/White Walkers couldn’t enter the cave under the tree where the OG Three Eyed Raven lived until Bran let the White Walker touch his arm. The touch broke the protection spell - maybe the same spell that keep them from passing The Wall.

No, they definitely mentioned that the three eyed raven’s tree was protected from wights and white walkers and that Bran fucked it up when he got touched. That’s why they had to leave immediately, and why Hodor died.

Let’s hope the same magic isn’t what’s keeping the walkers beyond the wall, or else Bran’s trip south will usher in Armageddon.

Cersei has adamantly rejected marrying for political reasons again (to Loras). Cersei has shown zero ability to understand the need for political alliances, and destroyed most of the Tyrells even though she desperately needed their support. It is unimaginable that she would agree to marry someone like Euron no matter how much she might need his ships.

Euron may (probably will) attack Dany’s fleet, but it will be for his own reasons, not to help the Lannisters.

The lords of the Riverlands mostly refused to support the Freys, which is why they had to ask the Lannisters for help. With the Freys decapitated and the Lannister army gone south, there’s zero chance they will support the Freys now. Neither the Freys nor the Lannisters are still a credible threat, especially if Lannister forces get bottled up in Kings Landing.

The Riverrun garrison obeyed him unquestioningly even though it was an extremely stupid thing to do and he wasn’t well-respected even before his capture. Now he may have even less respect but he is still the sworn lord of most of the Riverlands.

I think that’s a strong possibility. However, we have seen the Three-eyed Raven (as a raven) at Winterfell, although it’s not clear if that was just Bran’s vision or the raven was physically present. (Though the Three-eyed Raven didn’t have the problem of having been touched by the Night’s King.) Both Bran and the original Three-eyed Raven visited areas south of the Wall in the past, but perhaps only spiritually.

The flaw in her plan was not having a Clapton lock on Tommen’s window. Her plan wasn’t to be Queen; if was to be the Queen Mother to a compliant Tommen, who would be free of the influence of the High Sparrow.

I read through this whole thread, but may have missed if anyone pointed out the Red Wedding parallels (pointed out in a recap I read from Gizmodo). The 3 biggest characters to die at the Red Wedding were Greywind (killed by crossbow), Robb (killed by a knife through the abdomen), and Catelyn (killed by knife slitting the throat) and . The 3 people who orchestrated it are now all dead and were Tywin Lannister (killed by crossbow), Roose Bolton (killed by a knife through the abdomen), and Walder Frey (killed by knife slitting the throat).

Tower of Joy - Is there any significance to the Tower of Joy, besides that it just happened to be where Lyanna was held during the war? It just appears to be a tower in the country. Also, was Lyanna killed or did she just die from the childbirth? She was bleeding a lot when Ned entered but I couldn’t quite figure out why. If she was killed, who would have killed her and why?

Related thought: Could Little Finger and/or Varys already be aware of Jon’s actual parentage? If so, I’m sure Little Finger would certainly be able to use that to his advantage.

Littlefinger - As I correctly predicted in the last episode’s thread, he was left with no choice but to basically admit that he wants to end up on the Iron Throne. He and Sansa quickly figured out that he hit his ceiling. I hope that Sansa has figured out that he has no love for her and that she’s just his latest tool to move up the ladder. Lysa was clearly the same type of tool, and I suspect that Catelyn was as well. Knowing Little Finger, she was simply the first tool available to him, but one that was lost when she was married off to Ned. Sansa really should be telling Jon that Little Finger will stop at nothing to continue moving up the chaos ladder.

Bran - Why does he want to get back south of the Wall? Isn’t he the TER already? If he’s simply going to be imbedded in a tree or something, what’s the purpose of crossing back over? And you have to give it to Meera Reed for being so darn dedicated. She must have been bored and cold for ages while Bran went through his metamorphosis. Speaking of the Reeds, did they support Jon with any soldiers for the battle for Winterfell? I don’t recall a meeting or anything.

Iron Bank of Braavos - At this point, I suspect they’ve written off the loans to the Westeros leaders. There’s really no one left to pay them back.

So many questions! And so much time to have to wait!
