Just thought that there are only 5 episodes left and that there will probably be about as many battles (in part based on this season trailers) : a couple battles with the white walkers (white walkers vs wildlings and/or the Night watch, White walkers vs Jon Snow, White walkers vs the North), Lannisters vs Tyrell, Lannisters vs Danaerys, Unsullied vs Casterly Rock, Ballistas vs dragons, Danaerys fleet vs Euron fleet, dragons vs white walkers, etc…There are a lot of possibilities, some more likely than others.
We should have some serious battle (or several) in pretty much every single episode, now.
I can’t see the Dothrakis leaving behind women and children. It would be dangerously stupid. On the other hand we didn’t see any evidence of them being present.
Dollars to donuts in some upcoming episode the Dothraki will commit some horrendous atrocity and Dany will be compelled to make a choice between justice and keeping her allies. Hopefully it works out better for her than it did for Robb Stark.
Well, she hasn’t locked up the dragons again . . .
So far I have seen nothing to refute my theory that Ser Pounce will sit on the throne.
This isn’t the last season, you know.
She is probably the antagonist, so it probably won’t work out.
Yeah, but by the time next season rolls around Bran will be looking for a Florida retirement community.
The antagonist to whom?
No, but I expect the last season to be centered on the final fight against the night walkers. I guess (hope) this season won’t be spent with all parties involved sitting on their asses. Casterly Rock will have to be taken, the Lannister will have to deal with Olenna Tyrell, presumably the white walkers will finally attack the wall, the dragons will be seen in action, etc…
I wish. I hoped so much that she would eventually turn to be the antagonist last season, but the show doesn’t seem to be headed this way. During the last episode, it has been made clear that she was aware of the risks for the people in releasing her forces without restraint, and that she wanted to avoid that. And the most sympathetic characters are now on her side. So, I unfortunately don’t believe it will happen.
The only tiny hope I have is that maybe Olenna Tyrell could convince her to join the dark side.
THE antagonist. The big evil force people will have to fight, united, to save Westeros (the role currently attributed to the white walkers). Many people including me have supposed in the past that given Danaerys objectives, personality flaws, behaviors, heredity and methods, she would eventually turn into a “Mad Queen”.
Progress/non-White Walkers/Jon Snow. I fully expect her to form some sort of alliance with Jon at least initially, which might be shattered at some point.
And antagonist != villain. She can have the best of intentions, but that means nothing if she impedes the “heroes.”
She has long been a sort of Mary Sue character for the audience, but things like threatening to burn Varys (however much he might deserve it) and the Dothraki issue (which may come up or be unaddressed, possibly in a Deus ex machina where they conveniently die off anyway) hint at a darkness. She genuinely felt bad when her dragon killed that peasant’s child, but her waffling over that solved nothing.
The most sympathetic characters are on her side now since the last episode killed off or imprisoned the non-sympathetic characters on her side. It’s still not clear if we are supposed to be rooting for the Sand Snakes, but we’re not. Sure Olenna is ruthless, but most people still like her.
I don’t think she’ll be as bad as her father, but her impulsiveness and poor decisions will make her into sort of a hero antagonist. Of course that all depends on D&D, I have no idea if their intentions are the same as GRRM’s.

The domestication of the Dothraki was one of the more unbelievable developments in the whole series. Sure, Dany’s miracles and dragons might have caused them to behave for a short period. But their depiction in the show implies that they’ve essentially lived in chaos and anarchy for generations, abusing everyone in their path. And now we’re expected to believe that they happily jumped on ships in an organized manner to protect their queen, and eschewed raping and pillaging forever? That’s laughable.
The Mother of Dragons can be persuasive, especially after she burned all of your chieftains to death at the same time and was miraculously unharmed by the blaze.
Why are people wondering how Dany feeds her troops? As Jaime Lannister explained while standing on the giant map, it is the Lannisters who cannot feed an army since the Tyrells are the only ones with surplus food. This is the reason why Jaime lobbied Tarly so hard. And also the reason why he ends up in High Garden if the coming attractions are to be believed.
Re: the “Dany as the antagonist” theory, I admit I quite liked the theory but agree that it probably won’t pan out that way. But I don’t really see her as the “hero” of the story either. She will most likely face some degree of disgrace/ruin/death. The only person who could possibly end up being the “hero” is Jon Snow. But that would almost be too perfect, because his character is just a little too noble. Ned Stark was noble as hell, and we saw what happened to him in this world almost immediately.
Ultimately, I am actually hoping for a relatively downer/dystopian ending, where everything is in shambles, most everyone is dead, and everything is fucked. If this is going to be the series that really subverts the tropes, then let’s commit to it fully. No heroic triumph or ending on a hopeful note.
Not going to happen. The majority of viewers would feel betrayed “I watched GoT for 7 years for…that???”
Besides, they apparently intend to produce spin offs after the end of GoT. Presumably, they’ll want to keep their fan base.
I don’t think that even Martin would end the story on a complete downer, let alone the show writers.
But I still hope that the bittersweet ending will be more bitter than sweet.
I expect the threat from the north to be averted, and magic (including odd seasons, and dragons) to be gone in the end, most of our favorite characters dying along the way, but a few non-magic characters like Sansa and Samwell to survive, with a lot of work left to do to rebuild society. That’s my idea of “bittersweet”.
Hah! Good one.
