Game of Thrones: omnibus discussion thread based on knowledge of books (OPEN SPOILERS)

I’ve always loved that video because it’s soooooo lame it comes out the other end being entertaining.

Then being said, I thought that it was going to be a video with the Osmonds. I still think Donnie and Marie had a Jaime/Cersei relationship.

You have - there’s two other kids that belong to Cersei/Robert - they were in the dinner scene in Winterfel when Tyrion shows up and talks about his desire to go to The Wall and piss off the edge of the world. Princess Myrcella and…shit, I forgot the other son’s name. Both actually sweet kids.

Ser Pounce!

-Joe

I was thinking the Partridge Family or the Brady Bunch.

They don’t have a midget though!

Their teeth could chew right through bone. Maybe there was a midget, before they got hungry one day.

Tommen.

He might have, I suppose, if he were pushed into a corner. He is definitely impulsive, and I suppose he was serious when he suggested to Cersei that they simply openly marry each other after Joff’s death.

There IS some royal precedent for that in Westeros. The Targaryens did it quite a bit.

ETA: I assume you meant Robert’s death.

Also remember that Jaime just wasn’t a thinker. He’s a fighter that nobody can beat, and because of his family connections he can basically get away with anything.

He gets what he wants. Why should this be any different? If Cersei had just said yes, Robert would have been run through minutes later.

-Joe

Tyrion would kill anyone who made him dress like that.

jayjay, the Targaryens might have gotten away with incestuous marriage, but Jamie and Cersei aren’t Targaryens. Like somebody else once said, somebody who has dragons can pretty much do whatever they want.

That would require the knife to have actually been Tyrion’s. I’m pretty sure it was Robert Baratheon’s though, he’s the one who won it from Littlefinger.

LOL. Thanks for that!

Jaime didn’t suggest going public until after Joff died.

What do people think of the writing? Though I disagree with a few of the changes like the Clegane story, overall I am impressed.

I think most of the new writing has helped flesh out the characters while still keeping to the spirit of the original. A good example was the scene between Cersei and Joffrey in the last episode. It made Joffrey a touch more sympathetic because he clearly understands his own limitations. At the same time it showed his immaturity and hubris. It also contrasted nicely with the wonderful scene between Ned and Arya and showed the difference between the two families.

In this episode I liked the scenes with Viserys and Thorne. Both of them are still jerks but the scenes help us understand where they come from and round them off a bit more than the books. Overall I think Episodes 3 and 4 in particular show that the writers clearly understand the books and have the confidence to deviate from them while still keeping to their spirit.

I’ve been happy with the writing for the most part. I think the dialogue comes across as true to the spirit of the books and the characters are all being developed properly with the possible exception of Sansa, who doesn’t seem infatuated with Joffrey and courtly life as she is in the books…

Yes, Sansa is definitely off. Other than that, my biggest complaint is Gregor. Maybe when we see him standing next to others and not on a horse he’ll seem bigger. While he looks like a large man, he doesn’t seem to be exceptionally so.

I guess another complaint, which will hopefully be rectified next episode is that the tournament has looked distinctly low budget so far.

Now, from looking at my picture, can someone tell me the deal with the shields.

The guy playing Gregor is over 7 feet tall, btw.

I agree he didn’t look that huge though. The mountain is supposed to be 8’, 350#, or something like that?

I’m re-reading the third book now, and Tyrion asks his father to proclaim him as heir - and Tywin refuses. He tells Tyrion he’ll never have Casterly Rock, although he doesn’t say how he will prevent Tyrion from inheriting or who will inherit instead. He intends Tyrion to take Winterfell as Sansa’s husband.

Can the lords override the natural succession in their wills? Just before the Red Wedding, Robb Stark drew up a document proclaiming Jon Snow as heir to Winterfell, even though he knows Sansa is still alive. But maybe he can do that only because he’s a king?
Between the Red Wedding and Joffrey’s wedding and Sam’s reappearance at the Wall, I was up half the night reading. Robb so didn’t deserve his direwolf - might as well have given it to Hodor. It takes a fool to completely ignore the instincts of your giant supernatural wolf-companion.

Probably Kevan, or Lancel before he got all religiousy. I think Kevan is lord of Casterly Rock now that Tywin is dead.

By the end of AFFC with the Septaers (WTF is their religious organization actually called again?) I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lancel in charge when the dragons come rolling over the oceans.

-Joe

It’s just called “The Faith of the Seven” or “The Faith”. Male clergy are called Septons, and female clergy are called Septas. They’re led by a council of senior Septons called the “Most Devout”, who pick a leader called the High Septon.

Lancel has joined a militant religious order called “The Warrior’s Sons”.
