Game of Thrones: omnibus discussion thread based on knowledge of books (OPEN SPOILERS)

‘Old Nan was asleep in her chair. Hodor said “Hodor,” gathered up his great-grandmother, and carried her off, snoring softly, while Bran lay thinking.’

But it also says that Old Nan may be the oldest person in the Seven Kingdoms.

By everyone but Roberts account Rhaegar was a good and honorable man, he also apparently already knew there was going to be trouble coming in the future and was actively trying to prepare for it.

Rhaegar has always been the never-seen, often-mentioned character who most intrigues me. So much hinges on him: Robert’s grief for Lyanna, the future of the Targaryen dynasty, the possible parentage of Jon Snow. Hope we learn more.

I, too, would put Dany in the “mostly good, and doing her best under the circumstances” column based on what we’ve seen so far.

I think Aerys reigned as long as he did because Tywin was Hand, not because the other lords tolerated his rule so much. When Tywin was Hand, there was peace and prosperity, so people were more willing to overlook how crazy the king was or how crazy were the things he did. However, as soon as Tywin resigned (before Aerys roasted Lord Stark and strangled Brandon - there was another Hand then), it seemed that there wasn’t anything to reign in the insanity and people couldn’t overlook the madness any longer.

Tywin was clearly ruthless, but he seemed a more than capable leader. I hate him too, but after he left it seem all hell broke loose. Without Tywin as Hand, I think it was only a matter of time until someone took Aerys out. Of course, mad as Aerys was, maybe it was only a matter of time until he took out Tywin, too. But we’ll never know.

What was the public reason that Tywin resigned?

Wasn’t he furious at Aerys for naming Jaime to the Kingsguard without even discussing it with him?

I thought it was because he refused to wed rhaegar to Cersei.

Westros Monopoly board is good for a bit of amusement.

Also, here’s a Game of Thrones relationship infographic.

It was both. They had been disagreeing for a while, and a combination of the King stealing his heir and refusing to let his daughter wed the Prince was too much for Tywin. I think part of the underlying conflict was that the King didn’t like that Tywin was more popular than he was.

And Aerys refused Cersei for Rhaegar in one of the worst ways imaginable, if you’re Tywin. Tywin grew up in a family that was considered weak and laughable - he dedicated his life to raising the Lannister name to something that was respected and feared, and largely succeeded. When Aerys refused Cersei, he did so with something like, “We don’t marry our sons to servants.” Very dismissive. Pissed Tywin off something awful.

But he didn’t resign as Hand until after Jaime told him he was joining the Kingsguard.

Linky no worky.

Re the valonqar: Does it have to be one of Cersei’s younger brothers or would a younger brother do? I’m wondering if maybe Lancel (I think he is the younger brother of Martyn) willl kill her now that he is a holy warrior. I’m also wondering about Tyrek. He gets a lot of mention for a character that didn’t speak a line. Maybe he’ll come back in Book 6. I will miss Tommen, but he doesn’t seem mean enough for Westoros.

That’s because Blogger had to roll back posts from the last few days while they recovered from whatever it was that caused them to go down.

Blogger has promised to restore the lost posts… so it should be back soon. Hopefully.

Zev Steinhardt (who is SO happy that he switched his blog from Blogger to Wordpress a week or two ago.)

Dang, seems to have gone away now.

As of 4:35pm EST today, it’s back! Thanks for the link - funny and clever. Check out chubby Robert Baratheon, and scary-looking Khal Drogo.

OMG…Tyrion on the stool, Bran in the wheelchair, the “friendship” between Loras and Renly…this is too funny…

So considering that ADWD is supposed to be out this summer, giving the show writers plenty of time to read it and put together the revelant seasons, do you think they’ll follow the book format, or follow the stories chronologically?

I think (and hope) they’d follow chronologically. Plenty of fans were upset by the format of the fourth book and I think a lot of viewers would be, too. Plus they’d forget too much about what was going on with those storylines when they finally returned to them.

Agreed. Most definitely. To say nothing of actors aging out, dying or becoming unavailable. I’d hate a whole lot of roles having to be recast.
