Game of Thrones: omnibus discussion thread based on knowledge of books (OPEN SPOILERS)

Even odds on me tearing up if they do “we shall find a stonecarver that knew his face well.”

Well, we know it won’t be Robb, Catelyn, Tywin, Joffrey, Oberyn, or Gregor. Doubtful it’ll be the Lord Commander. Beric, maybe…

Who was the guy that died early? Was that rumor wrong?

Nice shot of Jaqen there.

That rumor came from an interview with Martin!

Also, Jaqen being shrouded is amusing. I assume it’s because he hasn’t been cast, but the Jaqen = Syrio people will be all riled up over that one.

They also didn’t show the murder of Brandon and Ned’s father, which was shot. The death might have been cut after that interview.

Interesting; I hadn’t heard that. Anyone seen any stills, or has anything made it to YouTube? Or maybe we’ll have to wait for the DVD.

So let’s talk about casting for season 2…

Having just gotten to the chapter that introduces Brienne on my re-read of Clash of Kings, I have to wonder just how they’re going to cast her. The smart money is on “Hollywood Ugly”, although the Britcentric casting so far makes that a less-than-absolute probability. Is there ANY young actress out there that would fit the visuals? I certainly can’t think of any offhand, but I have to admit that the majority of the major actors in the first season were unknown to me when they were announced, so it’s likely that there’s a vast pool of non-Hollywood actors that I don’t know much about that could include the perfect Brienne. Any ideas?

She’s not “young” and she’s definitely not homely, but when I was reading the books, I pictured Brienne as Kristen Johnston from Third Rock From the Sun. She’s a big woman, compared to most other actresses anyway.

Brienne doesn’t need to be ugly. Tyrion was supposed to be ugly, and that casting is working just fine.

That’s true, but…Tyrion is supposed to be just generally grotesque. Body shape can subsidize a lack of facial grotesquery in his case. Brienne, though…let me quote Clash…

I don’t know…a “Hollywood ugly” Brienne is a little tough for me to swallow, but then I didn’t care for Michelle Fairley at the beginning, either. I really thought she was too old-looking for Cat. She’s grown on me.

Too bad Lucy Lawless is too old. I found a thread on another board where most folks seem to favor an actress I’m not familiar with named Eva Damen; her face looks perfect for the role, but she’s a bit thin, and only 5’9", just shy of the 5’10" that the casting call required.

Here’s their casting breakdown for Brienne.

[BRIENNE TARTH] FEMALE. Age: 20s. A skilled warrior in service to Renly Baratheon. Larger and stronger than most men, we first meet Brienne when she wins a tournament, defeating the famed Loras Tyrell. Big-boned and plain faced, she has an awkward personality, but is also honest and loyal. She is derisively known as “Brienne the Beauty”… RECURRING. (Season Two: 6 episodes/Season Appearances: Multiple Season) Must be a MINIMUM of 5’10″. Do NOT submit actresses that look like models. We are looking for a big, WARRIOR-TYPE woman that’s more MANLY than womanly.

Ooh…Eva Damen looks perfect. Hopefully she can act.

I saw a rumor somewhere that Gerard Butler might play Stannis.

It was posted on IMDB a couple of days ago & then removed because it wasn’t true.

First season 2 casting news–Natalie Dormer will be playing Margaery Tyrell.

Given that she’s not an unknown and that Margaery doesn’t play a huge role in book 2 (does she even speak?), this tells me that chances are good we’ll get a season 3.

No, Margaery only shows up in a couple of scenes in Clash, IIRC. The Tyrells don’t come over to Joffrey until Storm, so she doesn’t really become her own character until then. In Clash, she’s mostly just Renly’s beard.

He’d make a pretty good Brienne.

Could this be referring to Marillion? Did the rumor say “die” or something more vague like “meet his fate.” In the show, the unnamed bard who loses his tongue at Joffrey’s command is replaced by Marillion, or at least, the same actor plays both bards. I don’t think they ever refer to him by name.
