Game Suggestions please

My roommate and I need a new game to play.

We played City of Heroes for 3 or so years. We loved it. But, it got boring. And, they kept changing the game in ways we didn’t like.

We moved to World of Warcraft and we’ve been playing that one for 3 or so years. It’s getting very boring. We both got our favorite toons (me a pally, him a hunter) to 80 and we just don’t like the others and don’t want to bother putting the effort into them. But, we already did our favorites and don’t really want to do it again (we had the same problem with CoH - me a controller, him a blaster).

So, we need a new game.

We are trying Vanguard right now. In a lot of ways, I like the game. A lot. It feels like playing a combo of CoH, WoW, Diablo, and Magic. But, the game still seems to have really pick requirements. For instance, my desktop and my roommate’s spare can both run Coh and Wow with no problems. My laptop can run WoW with no problems. Not one of the three can run Vanguard. My roommate’s new desktop can run it but it does still have some issues. We’ve done all the tech support stuff and it basically boils down to - upgrading. We’re not ready for that yet.
So, we need a new game to play.

What would you recommend and why? What do you like in particular and what do you hate? How much is it per month to play it? How is the support? Are the other players typically assholes? One thing I noticed that was on our server for CoH, people seemed really nice. We have been on two realms on WoW and asshole seems to be a communicable disease.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Oh, I should mention something. When we played CoH, we were part of a huge supergroup and we loved it. Then, it all fell apart. Since then, we’ve discovered that we really don’t want to play with other people. In WoW, we rarely played with anyone besides my sister. We just don’t much like other people. So, if your suggestion is based on PvP, raiding, or guild/supergroup type things, etc., we probably wont like it.

Vanguard had SO much potential, but like you, I could barely run it. Have you ever tried EverQuest 2? Its system requirements are higher than WoW and CoH but less than that of Vanguard. It was quite fun when I tried it, and I think it still has one of the more complex combat and trade systems; at release time, it was considered a prototype for next-gen MMORPGs.

As a bonus, if you subscribe to Sony’s Station Access Pass, you get access to a whole bunch of their games for $30 a month (EQ1 + 2, Planetside, Star Wars Galaxies, Pirates of the Burning Sea).

I also really enjoyed Lord of the Rings Online – it felt a lot like WoW with a more serious atmosphere and set in Middle Earth, obviously.

Those would be my top recommendations. Other possibilities:

I haven’t tried the new Champions Online, but that might be up your alley if you liked CoH.

If you liked Diablo, you might enjoy Guild Wars, but it lacks the depth of “real” MMORPGs.

I think Dungeons & Dragons Online recently relaunched as a free-to-play game, but I’m not sure how good it is.

ETA: My biggest issue with assholes and morons was, by far, in WoW. Thankfully, its popularity has siphoned off most of the kiddies from other games, leaving more mature and reasonable playerbases for the rest of us.

Might I suggest Neverwinter Nights 1? It’s bloody huge game.

  1. It’s cheap. you can get it and all three expansions for like $10-$15.

  2. You can play through the main campaign Co-op with up to 4 players. the campaigns for the expansions are single player only though, I believe. But that’s a good 60 hours of co-op right there.

  3. The biggest part of the game is the community created content. There are thousands of adventures available for download at the vault (nwvault.ign.com) And even if you stick to only the multi-player ones, and only the excellent ones that’s hundreds of hours of adventures to run through. If you include the merely good ones as well you won’t run out of content to play before you get bored.

  4. Persistent worlds are still running, and even new ones are still popping up. Persistent worlds are small MMO’s basically. The game ships with a DM client and a toolset, and the community has used those tools to create multi-player worlds that they host in servers.

NWN 2 is also a possibility, but it has higher system requirements, and the community content isn’t as large as that available for NWN 1.

So, we got into LOTRO. We both love the books and movies so I figured it would be a good pick.

So far, we both love the game. There is so much that I prefer about LOTRO over WoW.
I have one question though, now that I finally understand how the money works.

What is the point in allowing players to buy a house at lvl 15? Is there even the slightest chance in hell that someone new to the game will be able to come up with even 1g by level 15, without begging, getting it from a friend, or buying it?

I’m lvl 17. I haven’t bought much beyond repairs. I’ve been working my professions. I have yet to break 150s.

Is it even possible?

I want a house!!

Grr…so frustrating.

Maybe I’m just too used to having lots of money to play with on WoW. I just don’t see how it’s possible.
