Gays vs. Bible - huh?

I’m fairly sure Mr. Promisekeeper didn’t quote his verse (the sin=death quote) to make some ironic jab at the person he was responding to because they used a quote (God is love) as well. Of course, I have had the dubious benefit of reading the rest of the 5 page thread (on a pay site, otherwise I’d link it) in which he spontaneously throws in paragraphs of biblical text with no prior quotes as provocation. He stated that his exerpts were OK because they were conservative and the bible was a conservative document. Thus, they couldn’t be taken out of context. (Apparently his pastor is Rush Limbaugh). Using a sentence or two to make the bible sound liberal was his big problem with the God =Love person. I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s Dobson’s chump, one of the many that have bought the conflagration of Christian conservatism as one entity.

Yes, you’d have to be living in a very sheltered place to be surprised that gay women play in the WNBA. The surprise is that probably about 50% of them are straight (according to Swoopes at any rate). For some reason, that fact isn’t as disturbing to many as the fact that one stated it publically. Which then makes you wonder if behind all the noise and fury of the conservative movements problem with gays is wanting them to stay “in their place” - silent, asexual, and invisible.

I think you understood your OP much better than I did. :smack: The guy’s a hypocrite and a putz.

Just a heads-up, since you seem to be a relatively new member: This is pretty much always considered a bad idea on SDMB, because it has started “board wars” in the past, where a huge quantity of Dopers sign up on the other board and post over there, then a bunch of them come over here and chaos ensues. I’ve never seen one of these myself, but apparently they’re quite ugly and the mods want to avoid them.

In any case, perhaps we need some kind of Bible rules, like “No claiming to understand God’s thoughts/intentions/plans unless you’ve read more than, say, half of the Bible.” And no quoting a verse unless you’ve read the entire chapter.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him, And Is Not GAY, shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him, Except The Gays. Whoever believes in him, And Is Not GAY, is not condemned, but whoever does not believe, Or Is Gay stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son, Or Was Gay.

I don’t agree with** promisekeeper ** but I find his arguement interesting. Of course we don’t allow our children to do whatever they want, and I agree that you can pull verses out of the Bible to support just about any belief you want to make up. Understanding the Bible and the message of Christ takes a little more effort than reading the most quoted verses. As a reader of the Bible and the teaching of Jesus in particular IMO Christianity in general has replaced much of what Jesus taught with tradition and worship man’s tradition as if it is the will of God.

My question to Promiskeeper would be what scripture in the Bible, specifically condems a woman being a lesbian? Please, if you really profess to believe then point it out to me. I don’t believe there is one. I don’t believe the Bible is the word of God and there is nothing in that book that supports that particular tradition, but I don’t mind making that assumption when talking to those that do. I’d like to see this thread in GQ or GDs. If you believe the Bible is literally the word of God then defend that belief. If you pull verses from the OT to condem the Gay lifestyle then do you believe all the other things that the OT says. Should we still stone people for infidelity in marriage? If you throw out most of the OT then don’t quote it when it suits your own prejudice.

TV and movies are off limits as well. And theatre? Ha!

He’s limited to staying home and reading the Bible, pretty much.

William Gladstone: Your Majesty, work on the Criminal Law Amendment is nearing completion in Parliament. I am pleased to inform Your Majesty that we shall be outlawing every manner of… indecent behaviour.
Queen Victoria: We take it that you refer to the “Greek vice,” Mr. Gladstone.
WG: Indeed, Your Majesty. That along with the practice of… er… Sapphism.
QV: We are not sure of your meaning, sir. Surely you do not mean to imply that ladies actually commit such vile acts?
WG: Um… er…
QV: Haven’t you read your Bible, Mr. Gladstone? Well, have you?
WG: Er, yes, Your majesty.
QV: I have, I mean, we have, read right through the Bible and found no mention whatsoever of this. Therefore, it is beneath our notice. We will hear no more of this.

No wonder she was never amused.

God, do I loathe this kind of thing. I am so sick of church and the whole Christian thing–I know, I know, not all Christians are like this, but I swear, when do you hear about tolerance and acceptance?
Urgh.

Can I get an Amen?

AMEN!

Very well said, better than I usually say it myself. People like this “Promise Keeper” are pathetic hypocrites and they make me want to smack someone.

Of course there’s that whole David and Jonathan thing …

“I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.”

Seems like the louder end of the Christian fundamentalist scale actually believes its own hype, to the extent that their interpretation of the Bible is “what the Bible says” and everyone else’s interpretation is “an interpretation of what the Bible says”. If only such stupidity were immediately painful.

Better not be the King James version.

He better not read the Song of Solomon, though.

Not to mention the fact that he can’t ever eat beef again, because the music for the “Beef, it’s what’s for dinner” campaign is accompanied by music written by a gay composer, clearly indicating the acceptance of this deviant lifestyle by beef producers, whom his beef-buying dollars would in turn support.

HA I was thnking about that. Point that out to some fundy and watch them get all indignant about the mere suggestion that David and Jonathan were gay.

How about Ruth and Naomi ?
