I almost said “rock” band, but I don’t think I’ll limit it like that, although my tastes are pretty much exclusively rock roll/pop kind of stuff.
Anyway, I’ve been into The Hives lately, and those guys are pretty damn geeky, although it seems they try to be geeky. Weezer is another candidate, they seem more like your average nerd.
Beat me too it. They have a song which chronicles James K. Polk (Napoleon of the stump) and another which explains why the sun shines (the sun is a mass of incandescant gas).
I’ll second Moxy Fruvous (great band!), but I have one good band that outgeeks them all: Ookla the Mok. I implore all fellow geeks and anyone with a sense of humor to check out their free mp3s.
Yeah, Früvous was great. Any band that does a song about entropy deserves to be on this list. And they were an incredible live band. Tracy, I know you’re in Oregon and they didn’t tour out west very often; did you ever get to see them in person?
In the summer of '95 (give or take a year), at the Moore Theater in Seattle, The Presidents of the United States of America opened for They Might Be Giants. That was a good show.
Hewlett’s Daughter? The Sophtware Slump? I’m On Standby? If the computer-related lyrics weren’t enough, half of them have beards that scream “programmer.” I mean, these guys are actually geeks - not just in appearance, in spirit.
