I’d absolutely love to shave in the shower, but without a mirror, it’s just not an option. And even with a mirror–we put one up on one of those extending mounts, but then it’d fog up and the lighting wasn’t good enough. It’s not about cutting myself, it’s more about making sure I don’t miss any large spots.
(Also, dhkendall, I think you mean a safety razor, not a straight razor. Straight razors haven’t been popular to use solo since… well, more or less since King Camp Gillette invented the safety razor.)
Shower. I just feel my face to see if I’ve missed a spot. I usually haven’t. I should note that I’ve recently had to start using Wilkinson Sword razors, as switch from Merkur. Man, the Wilkinson’s suck. They get dull instantly.
I do the same - except, I usually *have *missed a spot. But my facial hair is not very thick and if I save regularly I can get away with it - I get the spot the next time.
Shaving with an electric is much more economical, and you can’t do that in the shower. Heck, mine allows you to rinse out the blades, but all that does is make the hairs stick and I have to take the whole thing apart and clean it out. I can’t imagine what actually having my face wet and having steam everywhere would do to it.
And while I said I shave over the sink–that’s because there’s a mirror there. I’ve tried shaving without a mirror, but I always miss spots. (And if I was still using a safety blade, there’s no way. I always either miss stuff or cut myself when I do that.)
I “shave” while leaning into the tub where the shower is, but not while actually showering. In fact usually my SO is showering at the time. And by “shaving” I mean trimming my moustache, beard, and trimming my neck so close with the trimmer that it kinda counts as a shave - no razor or shaver involved though.
I used to shave in the shower until I grew a bread. Now I need to be able to see what I’m doing. I do miss it though. Saved time and I always seemed to get a closer shave.
The one downside of shaving in the shower is the lack of mirror, and since I wear glasses a mirror wouldn’t be any use even if I had one. I guess feeling around has been good enough for me in most cases, though I do sometimes find I’ve missed a spot near my ears where my beard grows at a strange angle.
I’ve been tempted in the past by these waterproof electric shavers that you can use with you; are they worth looking into?
At which point I turn the water down to a mere dribble, just enough to wash the suds/stubble off of the blade. Target has a nice suction cup mirror-just have to wipe it down when I’m done (durned hard water here leaves stubborn spots behind if I don’t).
You can if it’s one of those waterproof ones. I switched from that to Fusion blades because I like the closer shave they give me (c. 20 hours before new stubble appears).
I use a Braun Electric and I do it in the easy chair, during commerials while watching the last TV show of the nite.
Afterwards I check myself in the bathroom mirror*, touch up as needed and splash on a astringent.
*but I have learned to check my beard mostly by feel.
