GET READY TO RUM-BEAR! - A Fat Bear Week MMP

I may be the only person on this board who has been to Katmai and seen the bears. We weren’t at Brooks River, but at the camp proper. The bears wander through the camp unimpeded. The only rules there are 1. Bears have the right of way 2. Don’t feed them or keep food in your cabin.

A cool 54F this Monday morn. Had the maintenance guy up to unclog the wife’s drain. Speaking of unclogging, I made the mistake of eating some very rich dark chocolate brownies last night and spent a very uncomfortable night running for the bathroom. Argh. Scratch chocolate off my list. Skipped exercise this morning.

I’m trying to request a credit card from our new bank and having so much fun with it. Not. I was supposed to unlock my Equifax freeze, but mistakenly unfroze my Experion one instead. Much merriment ensued on the phone with the bank people. I’ll try again tomorrow, but my enthusiasm is waning.

Not much on the week’s agenda. Maybe a laundry effort. Maybe a grocery visit. Otherwise, nuttin’.

So Krogering is done, Stopped at Target to get a Toothbrush holder but it wasn’t where the webpage said it would be, so headed over to Wal-Mart and got one that was right at the location they had put on-line. Then Jersey Mike’s for my #3 and chips and stopped at the bank to cash a $10 check. Home now and have assimilated the sammich and chips and finished off with an apple (and am resisting going back to the fridge for ice cream, discipline, Rat, discipline!). Probably will go to the gym for awhile to sweat off some of those calories and do my weekly weight-in (I also get a lot of reading and internetting done on breaks between walking or pedaling). Otherwise a quiet day is hopefully in store.

Taters, glad you have such a nice weekend. Happy Yard-putzing!

JtC, happy painting.

Mollie, thanks for the ‘dark fiber’ explanation.

doggio, admire the way you can keep all the chuckleheads separate in your brain.

Nut, productive days can be over-rated, IMHO. Appendages crossed for a Happy November.

Cookie, I have seen bears in the wild, but never at that site (it’s on my list). Sounds incredible. Good luck with the new credit card.

And digestion is fully in-process, so will finish my SDMB reading for now and prepare/pack for the cycling and treading part of the day.

Thanks for the early birthday wishes in the last MMP!

Today’s all-day meeting (the first in an all-week series) started at 7:30am, plus it’s truly autumn now, so on my way to the office I got to see my first sunrise in a while! Due to needing both hands for the driving[1] I couldn’t make like Mollie and take a picture, but it was purty. It was also the first time I needed to turn lights on in the house just to get downstairs. Heh. Anyway, it’s a boring meeting so I figured I’d pop into the MMP on an actual Monday.

Lunch with my dad and bro yesterday was fine. Dad indulged in a little reminiscing about how I wasn’t born on Fort Ord (he was in the Army) because the base hospital was being renovated, so I was delivered at a local civilian hospital instead. I got in some solid Lego-building once I was back home alone, and last night I was, indeed, grateful that I’d done my laundry on Saturday. Yay, past me!

This meeting is supposed to end at 4:30pm, and I plan to skedaddle home as soon as I can. I’m looking forward to more Lego time, plus what I’m planning for dinner. When I went to the grocery store last week, I decided to get the ingredients for something I used to make all of the time but have only had once since my bariatric surgery (almost five years ago): it’s sort of like tuna casserole, only with rice instead of pasta and it gets nuked instead of baked. Cream of mushroom soup + milk + tuna + Minute rice. Like I said, I used to make it very often – and I’d eat the entire thing at once (a whole can of soup, etc.) – but after surgery I found that rice would fill me up very quickly, and the one time I made it I got tired of it before I could finish all of the leftovers. That was a couple of years ago, though, and I’m willing to try again…even though now I’m also on a GLP-1 that reduces my appetite. It’s the only “pre-surgery” food that I actually miss, so I figured I’d make it again for my birthday and see how things go. I think I’ll be very happy, even if only for a few forkfulls.

Catching up on some stuff from the last MMP before diving into this week’s…

Amazon actually has a pretty decent selection; this one came from eBay, as did one or two of the sets that I’ve bought for myself. For in-person shopping, I also sometimes get retired sets from a couple of local buy/sell/trade stores. Just warn your friend that retired sets tend to be $$$!

I’ve come to the same conclusion…I’m pretty lucky. :two_hearts:

Pffft…amateur.

Yay!!

Nice!

And happy early birthday! :birthday_cake:

  1. my car is a stick ↩︎

bippityboppityboo, lyons ne. north and a bit west of omaha.

chefguy i’m soooo jealous! i’m watching the live stream as i type this. so gorgeous.

misnomer, happy birthday!

the early presents are for cousins. one a few days into jan., the other mid feb. now i get to hide them from the cats and hope i remember where i put them when the time comes.

i did get me an early name day present…

It’s been a Monday.

Plan for today:

  • Drop car off for yearly service
  • Go to work
  • Pick up car from yearly service
  • Go home.

Reality:

  • Hubby says he can’t drive and please call the doctor because his hip hurts so much.
  • Call doctor and get an appointment at 10:30.
  • Call garage and have them pick up the car.
  • Do a little bit of work from home.
  • Go to doctor with hubby (it’s a 3 minute walk, but today it was about 6 minutes)
  • Go to the store, because there’s nothing for lunch. While I’m there, the garage drops off the car.
  • Check that the car is where it’s supposed to be and chat with neighbor for 15 minutes.
  • Make lunch.
  • Do some more work.
  • Do a bit of garden work.
  • Do some more work.
  • Call it a day.

Hubby has an inflamed tendon which needs anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, and time to heal. Every time he gets up / sits down / turns while walking he makes noise. We’ve known each other for more than 35 years and today was the first time I heard him say, “Fuck” because it hurt to put on his shoes.

Hope everyone else is having a better Monday.

Enjoy the forkfuls. Happy Birthday! :birthday_cake:

That’s such a sensible explanation. My own (false) interpretation is that it’s for the dark web. Or vampire looking for connections. It’s almost October, right?

Pretty countryside, still has some of rolling Missouri River valley hills and I always prefer northern NE over southern.

The usual is to glare at the phone and holler into thin air, “Make a peanut butter sammich, dummy!” without picking up & while continuing whatever you were cleaning.

Sounds like they didn’t do the under-neath prep before the main painting.

Narrator: “Thou shalt useth thy primer, first.”

It gets switched over to the answering machine (hi, 1990s!) but it’s somewhat entertaining when the same poor soul calls over, and over, and over again.

Dude. Taco Bell is still open, try them.

When it’s a different number each time, well …

ROFLMAO

We’re pickup only. Have been since the 'Rona started, which predates my time at this place.

Coupla times a month, still, I’ll take an order, sweetly say, “Okay that’s 15-20 minutes to come pick up!” and hear, “But .. I didn’t give you my address?!?”

“Oh, sweetie, that’s because this location hasn’t delivered in years.

" … { vague splutter in however long its been since they last contacted us } … "

Which is why I always say, “.. to come pick up!” to clarify that yes, darling, you will be coming here. We will not be coming to you. Yes, if it’s late, you may hafta wait in line, at the drive-thru. Yup, just like everyone else, honey.

I know the feeling except it’s the hip bursa and ileotibial band. My “f@&k!!* is usually preceded by a gasp, but only when I try to stand up or take a step, every step.

Eh, the ability of some customers to be absolutely oblivious spans the globe… I remember my first day irkin’ at an airport coffee shop, when we’d all gone in to help set the place up. They’d cordoned off the whole area, there were cardboard boxes all over the floor, lights off, and all the equipment was obviously switched off and just on the counters all willy-nilly while stuff was being plumbed in.

Two people picked their way round the barriers, through the heaps of trash and to the counter, and tried to order a coffee off someone. Both of them were very confused at being told ‘No’.

I also had someone very confused and angry at me because I didn’t know what his ‘regular order’ was, as he ordered it daily… from a different shop in the same chain. The hive mind gets installed along with the uniform apparently.

That’s without even starting on the drunks…

Back home, pooped, but I got a lot done. I’d forgotten how much there was to paint, consequently a lot of places to cut in the edges. And lots of messy cut-ins which I tended to immediately with the many small bits of cloth I’d assembled just for that purpose. At first I thought I’d just be doing the v-berth, but I decided to attack the small wall in the head - that only took about 30 minutes. It took about that long to clean the brushes. ick

FCD met me for lunch so I did get a break, and we discussed a few other things while he was there. Then he returned home to finish the drawings so he could build yet another cabinet. This one will include a helmsman seat and a couple of drawers beneath.

Tomorrow I’ll go back to touch up where necessary and to reinstall the bits I had to take off the bulkheads. It shouldn’t take too very long. I hope.

On the way home, I stopped for gas since it had dropped (HAH) to $4.09 and I was down to half a tank. And I decided I deserved an ice cream cone while there. Imagine my surprise when my Drumstick (granted, it was a big one) came to $4.98!!! Aw, what the heck - I’m worth it.

Since we lunched at Salsa’s, we’ll just forage miscellany for supper - probably just cereal or sammiches. For the moment, tho, I need to sit a bit and chill.

My wife has been seriously bummed out since Otis failed to return two or three years ago.

I’m guessing he was her spirit guide.

We actually do have some smoked salmon. Hubs caught it and his HS/college bud smoked it back in August 2023. The Stem Cell Transplant Dr immediately said he couldn’t eat it at that time but she’s recently given the go-ahead. I need to dig it out of the back of the freezer.

Thanks for the link! I’ve been seeing a number of Instagram posts about Fat Bear Week last week. Geeked.

Woke sometime after 2am for bio break then couldn’t get to sleep until sometime after 4. Next thing I knew, I opened my eyes and it was 8:40. Hustled and left for work at 9:30. Worked 4-1/2 hrs and didn’t get caught up. Good news was that the little piece of paper that had torn off in the scanner had been removed so I was able to scan several packets of documentation for cash receipt entries.

Did not get around to stitching the old English D on Bella’s jersey yesterday so I did so this afternoon. I need to start getting ready as I’m hoping to leave within half hour for Bark in the Park.

Have a good evening; see you 2esday.

Definitely not our Otis - he’ll be 2 next month…

Painting was sweaty and sticky, not to mention the paint I got on my right elbow and forearm, so I’ve showered and shampooed and I’m now fresh as a daisy, whatever that means. I’m going to slice up my evening apple snack, then find something to watch on TV since I finished Dr Thorne - it was only 4 episodes.

So, off to the kitchen I go!!

Happy birthday oopsie! :birthday_cake:

Laundry is done, 'scrips picked up and I’ve played in the studio most of the day.

Ariel, a.k.a. Boom Shakalaka for you fans, had her fourth shockwave treatment on her soft tissue injury today. The Vet is extremely pleased at how well it is healing and I can start doing some trot work as part of her rehab. She also got her flu vaccine. She was sedated for the shockwave treatment but soon after the treatment was finished she started screaming so it was time for her to go back outside.

I had to stop for a cheeseburger and fries on the way home and somehow accidentally, truly accidentally, I ordered a double cheeseburger. I had half the double cheeseburger so that’s just a regular cheeseburger and now I have half of a double cheeseburger for lunch or dinner tomorrow.

Both my hand egg teams lost yesterday and Williams (Bears QB) got injured during the game and might be out the rest of the season.

Finished yoga. Three Cup Chicken was up.for dinner. It was one of those dinners that take a lot of prep, but then comes together quickly in the wok.

I still sweat like I used to, but it tastes funny.

Happy birthday, Oppsie!!!

Time to clean the kitchen.

Howdy Y’all! Been home for a while from men’s night, but needed some chill and stoopid teevee. Nice crowd tonight and, as usual, we solved all the world’s problems, but no one ever listens to us. Someone actually volunteered to come early next month to see what all is done to setup. He said he feels like somebody should know what to do in case there comes a time when we can’t. It ain’t hard. Matter of fact, we figured it out all by ourselves cause we be smrt!

Mollie* correct me if I am wrong, but it looks to me you’re sayin’ so far so good. It is a brave thing you’re doin’ and you’ve got the whole MMP to back you up. Your sweat tastes funny? I have never licked myself.

WetOne good to know the vet is pleased with Ariel aka Boom Shakalaka. Now that will be in my haid again.

rocker can one really have too much treat food?

doggio you know how to brunch! Flotato looks like he/she would drink up all my beer.

Oopsie glad you had a good lunch with dad and bro and got some Lego buildin’ done. Enjoy your bday casserole!

Dicey so sorry hubs is in so much pain! Hope he feels better soonest.

shoe what do you mean I have to wait in line like everybody else! I do not belong with the peasantry! I must be given prority and have my pizza brought directly to me while heralds play trumpets!

Nuts personally I am incensed that every fast food and chain place does not know what my usual is. I mean, don’t they have it somewhere in their computers? Must I really tolerate such incompetence!

MOOOOOM sometimes we must treat ourselves, price be damned.

And now this…

< AHEM > CLEARIN’ THROAT < AHEM >

HAAAPPPYYY BIIIRRRTTTHHHDDDAAAYYY TOOOOOO YOUUUUUU!!!
HAAAPPPYYY BIIIRRRTTTHHHDDDAAAYYY TOOOOOO YOUUUUUU!!!
HAAAPPPYYY BIIIRRRTTTHHHDDDAAAYYY DEEEAAARRR OOOOOOPPPSSSIIIEEE!!!
HAAAPPPYYY BIIIRRRTTTHHHDDDAAAYYY TOOOOOO YOUUUUUU!!!

Yeah, I think I’m saying that.

Re the sweat. Have I ever mentioned that I do hot yoga? When you’re in a downward facing dog pose, the sweat has nowhere to go but your mouth and eyes[1]. I know what my sweat tastes like, and this ain’t it.

  1. The sweat band! It does nothing! ↩︎

Happy real birthday OOPSIE!

That’s pretty amazing, I hope they follow up.

Hurray for Ariel, making vets happy about recovery is always a good thing.

George’s “real” name is Pimacoon Cole out of Konakats Bastet of Maine.

Good news. I’m glad you are able to move well enough to go out, then come back and play. May your recovery continue quickly.

Gentle hugs going your way. I’m so sorry you are still fighting this, chronic pain is just horrible. I’m glad you have a loving kittah to help

Nice, that’s gotta stop a lot of issues.

I used to work in a strip mall by a Domino’s and heard many stories while taking smoke breaks with the drivers.

I do still remember that terrible day that we learned that pizza places don’t open for breakfast, I almost died of the munchies that day.

It sure did sound like it. I hope your Tuesday is better.

Mom often amuses herself by telling people I was born in a mortuary. I wasn’t really, I was born in a stand alone hospital annex that was later sold and turned into a mortuary.

Thanks, but the actual painting won’t happen for a couple of months. Next month I’m having some bushes put in - I’m thinking I want 4 different Rhododendrons in the planter in front of the porch, but still need to get that figured out before doing anything else.

That seriously sucks and I’m really sorry for you.

Dang about the credit card issues, they suck.

Ya ain’t got time for that. Heck, you barely have time to develop a drinkin’ problem first.

You are going to do great, I’m sure of it!

That sounds wonderful and we are going to be stopping at Aldi on the way home. *adds to list.

Tomorrow is my last visit to my surgeon’s office. I honestly feel like cancelling because we don’t really have anything to talk about anymore. My shoulder is great, I just need to remember my timer when I’m stitching. I still have no upper body strength but I’m working on that as well.

The only reason I’m going is because I’m worried about my real doctor scolding me because he wants all of my treatment notes and will notice that I haven’t been released or whatever its called.

I’m back to worrying about Hubs. He’s starting to get short of breath even just sitting and had a stress test today. He has an echo-cardiogram and blood work scheduled and they changed his meds.

This sucks. The stent was supposed to take place of his blocked quad by-pass for a decade, not for a year. I don’t think he will agree to more open heart surgery, he says that was the worse thing he’s ever lived through and he won’t do it again.

In other news, we got a nice storm today. Lots of thunderboomers (poor GeorgiePie, loud noises hurt his radar ears) and almost an inch of rain. Now its so foggy I can’t see the place across the street.

Earlier, I heard Harry’s bell ringing like a demented toddler had ahold of it so of course I went to look. One of his grand kids and family were at the door and they had very excited TWO toddlers. Someone opened the front door, everyone came in and Harry’s Raven came flying out his door and into the forest. All I could think was “same, dude. same.”

thanks for flagging fat bear week starts tomorrow. I’m leaning toward Backpack just 'cause the name
