Getting to work on time - a commuting MMP

rosie, should we start a Go-Fund-Me for the Cute One’s ™ new iMac?

My commute is 35 miles in each direction, which translates to ~35 minutes coming in and ~45 minutes going home. With the exception of a couple of miles of surface streets on the home end and .5 miles on the irk end, it’s all interstate and parkway.

Today has been both busy and slow. Slow in that one of my areas was good enough that I only had to spend half an hour reconciling it (usually it’s two to three days) which was an excellent thing.

The first thing I did when I got in was got on the line to the Indiana Department of Revenue. Why, when I haven’t lived there for twenty years? I noticed a ding on my credit report shortly after moving to Tennessee. For the last 15+ years, I’ve tried on and off to track it down and nobody, but nobody in state government could/would help me.

Last week, I got a notice in the mail for tax amnesty. W00t! Two hundred fifty nine dollars (discounted from nearly $800) by today and the dragon would be appeased. Unfortunately, their website was not only poorly designed, but not equipped to deal with those of us who have no paper checks and the numbers contained on them. The offices opened at 8:00 EST today and I was one of the first ones to pay up.

While I was waiting for a meeting, I also went online to get my ticket to see Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Our meeting was to tell us that we were all getting a pretty decent raise, which really made my day.

Do you think the public will appreciate how desperately I need one?

Yay.

ETA - if each of my facebook and doper friends donated $1.75, I’d have enough for an iMac and a copy of MS Office for Mac. Dare I try?

At school, sandwich eaten, and now RPing while drinking a gin’jale. (That’s Virginian for “ginger ale”.)

rosie, I think you could make your case and if not your pic, post one of the kittehs! Yours would be one of the milder accounts.

How’s this?

Greetings, friends
I have a need for which I require assistance to fulfill. My computer is old and weak. It first came online in mid 2009, and only has 2GB of RAM and a mere 320GB storage. My quality of life would be much improved if I could obtain an 8GB/1TB iMac with a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor. If each of you donated a mere $1.75, I would reach my goal in no time. You would have my everlasting gratitude.

Remember when having a 1 GB hard drive was like, “Wow, how am I ever gonna use that much space?” Now, hell, I’m using up 2 GB on my thumb drive alone.

Go for it Rosie. I will donate more than the $1.75.

A dollar two ninety eight here.

Can I really do this? Without being censored by the GFM-PTB? Do people start campaigns for everyday things? Is there a guideline of what type of begging is allowed?

Yes, you really can. Go check out some of the other requests. There are rules but an emergency computer purchase is legit.

I don’t know how much of an emergency it is - it’s not like my livelihood depends on it or anything

I have warned **FCD **not to be surprised to find the hide of a black pug nailed to the garage door when he gets home. About 12:45 (in the wee hours of the morning) Higgs started barking and whining. It continued for TWO FREEKIN’ HOURS! I finally gave up, let her out of her crate, and after she came in from peeing, I let her get back in bed with me. She wanted to play. But she eventually quieted down and I got maybe another hour or so of sleep before the evil alarm woke me.

I’m not even going to bother with the crate tonight. **FCD **can deal with her when he gets back. I need sleep. 4 hours ain’t gonna cut it. Stoopit dog.

Busy busy at work, which is good. But I’m having some problems with Windchill (big surprise) which isn’t good. I had 2 drawings assigned to me today. One was pretty quick and easy, altho it will change according to the engineer. (I told him indecision is the key to flexibility - he laughed!) The other is going to be a major pain in the ass. It’s pretty much a tool box on wheels with a bunch of stuff installed in it. I’ve got to show the installation of the structural parts as well as the electronics. I need to find out if there’s a way to hide certain items in one view but not in all. We shall see how it goes. I expect much cussing to ensue.

My dentist changed my appointment from 4 to 3:40, so I’ll have to take 30 minutes of sick leave on Thurs to get there in time. Not that big a deal, and actually good because it’ll get me home sooner to turn Higgs loose. And I made an appt with my dermatologist - there’s another thing on my scalp and it’s getting bigger. Naturally, I suspect another carcinoma. Can’t get in to see her till Dec 18 due to my schedule. I may consider taking some time without pay just so’s I can get an earlier appointment. I’ll call tomorrow and see what might be done.

Other than that, just another freekin’ day in paradise. No idea what I’ll do for supper, but I need to decide soon.

**rosie **- I was just thinking last week that I need to look into replacing my computer also. But I don’t do Mac - my limited experience with that system soured me right quick. It’s hard for me to justify it at the moment - we need to replace our mattress, and I’m just waiting for the dishwasher to go tits-up. Always something…

Oh, yeah, my commute. It sucks. There are few options and none avoid the congestion around the base. Forty minutes each way if there are no accidents or raindrops falling. The drive is quicker in the morning, but the extra lane thru the main gate doesn’t open till 6, so I get stuck in that backup. Sometimes only 4 or 5 cars can get thru the light. I’ve sat 15 minutes in the turn lane/approach lane to the gate. Not fun. Good thing I like the work I do.

Happy Moanday. Send chocolate.

We recently replaced my Toshiba laptop (that finally broke when its hinges malfunctioned) with a cute, blue HP netbook. It doesn’t have a DVD drive, so we got a USB DVD drive to go with it.

Now ekemom’s Toshiba laptop is showing signs that it won’t last much longer either, and for the same reason: Hinges are screwing up. We anticipate having to spend about $200 on a replacement, either on the November or the December paycheck. Maybe it’ll be ekemom’s Christmas present to herself.

Chilling in the school library, having eaten a Mr. Goodbar recently, and I’ve got a little more than half of my A&W bottle still full. Man, I love me some root beer.

Instead of getting tater tots, which was the original plan, ekemom and I will stop by Arby’s on the way home for some curly fries to go with our barbecue ribs. Nummilicious!

Mmmmmm. Curly fries.

When it comes to French fry discussions, everyone seems to overlook Arby’s. A year or so ago in one of my classes, we were having a talk about who makes the best French fries. One of my classmates brought up McDonald’s. I said, “No… Arby’s.” “Oh, yeah. You right, my bad.”

Logging off. I plan to crash early. *** MWAH!!***

My first computer had an 80 MEG hard drive and I couldn’t imagine filling it. :smack:

I just put a single file (a 46 min video) on a thumbie drive; the file was 2.5GB. The raw video & stills which I edited down to create it totaled 75GB.
Dinner was Riga(Hi,)toni w/ frimpsh that were marinated in balsamic vinegar & honey before being sautèd. Note, never marinate frimpsh in a raspberry vinaigrette as they absorb color of said raspberry vinaigrette & look the color of a cooked frimpsh before you even start to cook 'em. :smack:

Crumbcrunchers. I remember thinking the same about 32k. Now get off my lawn, dammit.
