I moved a friend to his new house during Bonnie. That was “fun”.
So here’s a question - your high school aged kid starts a new sport, which is super cool. Coaches are nice, everybody’s great. Fourth day of practice, the assistant coach sends a group text to the team announcing a campout the next day in her backyard. Now, I’m usually pretty relaxed as to who my son can and can’t visit, but is it weird that a lady you’ve never met invites a team of boys to spend the night in her backyard, or am I just being oversensitive? I wouldn’t bat an eye at a get together for a couple of hours for team building, but an overnight feels like going from handshake to makin’ out in the first five minutes.
Glad your IRS woes are close to being fixed nellie.
metal mouse, you know you’re retired when you lose track of the days. We had a card table too, good for a second table of Euchre or seating kids at Thanksgiving / Christmas.
Hi nava! You don’t have to be a stranger, you know.
That sounds like a cool drive taters. Skritches to Polar.
Irked, came home and am off for the weekend. Tomorrow will be spent on household chores and grocery shopping along with a dog park run. Other than that, it will be spent messing around in the studio and reading (it’s too cussed hot to do much outdoors - 98 when I got off irk today and 101 yesterday).
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
All in all, the first day went pretty well. A couple of periods are rather…eclectic, but that also means interesting. Reading the minutes of the school board meeting on the mask mandate makes me all stabby. People that stupid shouldn’t be allowed to breed.
Howdy Y’all! I did accomplish mowage. I have felt all smug because da cave yahd now looks better than the yahds of my neighbors on both sides of me. I take my amusement when and where I can find it. Mowage and the makin’ and consumin’ of sup were the major activities of the day.
Evening’, all!
The deadline for the proposal I’m helping with has been pushed back quite a bit, and the breathing room is a relief. Work is a bit nuts these days: one of my roles is staffing manager, and we currently have 20+ openings. Did I mention it’s just one of my roles? I love my job, and I also enjoy proposal writing, but the extra time will help me figure out how to do both at the same time without wanting to eat my weight in cookies every night.
I’m still mourning the chicken breasts that I lost to the 13-hour power outage. When I went to the grocery store yesterday, they didn’t have any; I think it’s something that’s only available online. I bought some breaded chicken cutlets, but it turns out I don’t really like them. I’m convinced that the chicken breasts — which I’d never bought before — would have been yummy. I’ll order them again whenever I’m ready for more groceries.
Did you know that there is a terrific French TV show called Lupin, about said crook? And that it’s available on Netflix?
I’m not a parent (or a coach), but I’m going to say “YES.”
There’s some old woodsman lore passed on to Girl/Boy Scouts about counting the number of chirps a cricket makes and from that deriving the temperature. Let me just say that the cricket (Common Field Cricket. Not Named “Toby.”) in my garage sounds like Ron Wilson on acid.
It depends, but I’m leaning toward not weird. It sounds she’s planning it as a team-building, something a lot of coaches do. The fact you don’t know her doesn’t necessarily raise a red flag. After all, thousands of parents send kids to camp every year without knowing the counselors or their supervisors. But how many boys? Who else will chaperone*? Is this an old tradition? Are there hazing-type rituals? I take it the principle and AD have approved the campout?
I’d call her in a friendly way and ask. If you’re not comfortable, that’s good reason not to send him. The others may bond without him, but they’ll connect with him later on, I bet.
- Be careful here, or you could get asked. OTOH, chaperoning would allay your concerns.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 95 and maybe rain. Or not. Who knows! I think it did rain some overnight. This mornin’ I shall head over to the church house to deal with some church janitor Junior Warden duties. The rest of the day shall be spent in sloth and quality cee-mint pond time is foreseen. We shall swipe The General’s sup.
Talky I like the advice Nellie gave about talkin’ to the coach and I agree I would not send him if I were not comfy after talkin’ and gettin’ my questions answered.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy Then, alas and bother, I suppose I shall purtify and don appropriate bein’ about the public attire. Woe!
Happy FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH DUNH! DUNH! DUNH! Y’all!
Morning, mumpers! It’s a cool 18C/63F here, weather guessing device says “mostly cloudy” which looks about right from what I can see out of the window. There’s some cloud, some blue but no bright yellow ball. That’ll do for me.
*metalmouse Yes, I am the cat feeder but I am not automatic as I’ve developed the power to say “no” otherwise Whisper would get his wish of a pouch of Whiskas every hour, on the hour! He’s still not quite worked out the automated feeder so we’ll keep that going over the weekend and see what happens.
Talky I second Nellie’s advice about talking to the coach and getting some answers. Are you friendly enough with any other parents that you could ask their feelings on it too? It sounds a bit strange to me, but not a situation I’ve ever been in so I have no idea if it’s a common practice or not. Sounds like the kid might miss out on a good bonding experience with the other boys though, and that could do more harm than good. If it’s just one night, maybe let him go this time and tell him to call you if he thinks something odd is going on?
I have four anna quarter hours until I finish irk for my holiday. An hour of that shall be a lunch break because I say so, and an hour of it is a catch-up meeting with two colleagues who need to know whatever I need them to do next week. I might even finish early! Woo and hoo!
And it’s another grand and glorious day in paradise!
FCD has been sleeping almost thru the night, and I think it may be because he’s not napping during the day. Plus he got a refill of some meds that ease the pain so he can sleep better. Fingers crossed that his crankies pass soon, tho work will have a good bit to do with that also.
I’ll be picking up Roxy in about an hour, then back here to do laundry. Maybe afterwards I’ll take her to a playground close to here. We shall see. Maybe just a frolic in the sprinkler. If the weather-guessers are to be believed, today should be the last of our extreme heat days, at least for a while. One can only hope.
Happy Firday the 13th! Let’s be careful out there! Or not. It’s just a silly superstition (she says as she looks over her shoulder…)
Happy Friday the 13th! (all y’all be careful though)
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, a load of towels in the wash and fixing to do the other household chores before purtifying to go get groceries.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Happy *checks* afternoon all!
Tis a soggy day around here, though the forecast said dry, it don’t look or sound dry to me.
I am without adult supervision- I’m currently lodging in some friends’ house until I get this next place sorted, but they’re off camping for the weekend. They’re really nice, but I am looking forward to having the place to myself for a few days.
The board has just informed me that I’ve visited here every single day for the last year. I’m not sure what to do with this information, but I don’t think I like it. I’m sure I used to have more of a life
I hope you’re all taking your dinosaurs out to dinner today, don’t forget!
Good morning all. Paper has been retrieved from the front yard, and that may be my big accomplishment of the morning. 77F outside heading for 92F, so another good day to stay inside.
Nut, there is no greater purpose in life than posting daily to the MMP…
talky, another one supporting nellie; it’s probably harmless, but a friendly conversation with the lady won’t hurt, I think.
OK, need to forage for sustenance. All y’all take care.
First load in the washer. Roxy ate her PB&J breakfast. And so it begins…
FCM, can you do a recap of FCD’s surgery? I can’t remember what he had done.
Thanks, guys - I knew I could count on the Dope. I did poll other parents who had sent a few of their kids through the same school already and participated in sports. They said that none of their kids had ever been invited to a coach’s house and that, generally, it’s considered borderline. I wasn’t able to get hold of coach lady for more info but told overlyboy that this one was his call - we laid out the pros and cons and overlyboy said his preference would be to meet up with them in the morning, especially since we had some family stuff planned tonight, albeit optional, that he was really looking forward to. It’s supposed to storm tonight, so if they delay it, I’ll probably encourage him to go if it’s rescheduled.
I guess I’ll have to loosen the reins sometime and this is how helicopter parenting happens. I wasn’t prepared for the enormous culture shock that is high school - you’ve got half the kids coming out of middle school where they didn’t manage anything for themselves and the other half young actual adults who make responsible decisions. Since he lost a year, I think I’m behind in chilling out.
Edited to add that the activities director and principal have not been consulted, or at least no one seems to know, so I’m assuming it’s not considered a tradition.
Good morning everyone.
It was 68 degrees out when I got up, but the temps have dropped to 64 degrees. However, temps are supposed to climb to 100 degrees today, so this blessed coolness will be short-lived. They say the wildfire smoke may tamp down the temps some, but we shall see. Right now, the smoke isn’t horribly bad in my area, but it’s supposed to increase. I know areas south and north of me have worse smoke conditions.
I think other than some errands, I’ll be sticking close to the house today and working on keeping Polar cooled down. And thus, my vacation winds down. I’m not looking forward to my return to work, but creditors want me to pay them and I need to eat, so I continue to work. I think I might poke into getting a retirement estimate done because I’m curious if I’m right about my estimate. I wonder if I’m being too cautious. I have a feeling I’m right, but it never hurts to let the pros run one. It’ll also give me a firmer idea of when I can actually go.
Maybe I shouldn’t have had a black cat walk under a ladder over a broken mirror this morning after all.
Up, caffeinated, and got my 12 miles in. I saw a lot of deer and bunnies on the riding trails this morning. I also saw a lot of runners. Looks like the high school cross-country team is training again. I like them. They run single file, not three abreast like the Ladies Who Walk do.
Time to pretend to work.
Up and about to be at 'em. Woke up exhausted again. I think it’s the heat. I don’t recall waking a lot, but I bet I did. I have little planned except going to the gym shortly. It’s nice not to have anything much planned. Also, I want to stay out of Mother Nature’s oven. It’s going to be 96º today.
wordy, you bring up a good point: it’s a big jump from middle school to high school, and probably an even bigger one for kids who were distance learners last year.I’m betting principal/AD know about the campout (It was a rule in my district.), for liability reasons if nothing else. I think you were wise to leave it up to overlyboy.
Yes, but was it as interesting a life?
Folks, Italians believe 13 is a LUCKY number. I’m going with that.
