Howdy Y’all! Groceries got bought and stashed away, stuff got done, we had some quality cee-mint pond time, and we went to the hog trough Golden Corral to chow down. All in all, not a bad day. Thus all is well.
Evening all. Dinner is quietly assimilating in my stomach. Spent a frustrating hour trying to remember how to type names and such on Four 3x5 labels (all on one sheet), then did a little looking and found the template that I used about 3 years ago, so that job is (halfway) done. Dishes are put away and the SPR (Strategic Pepsi Reserve) has been re-organized so the oldest stuff is up front. Some rain and tunder about 6pm, but all quiet now.
swampy, I’m a little jealous…I liked our Golden Corral (pot roast and noodles) but it was a victim of COVID here and hasn’t re-opened. On the other hand, construction of the Whatab*urger about 3 miles from me has commenced.
flyboy, only cosplays I want to do for my copays is Lupin the Third (for those not familiar with anime, he is a debonair crook…and anime David Niven, IMHO).
shady, sorry things are tense in shady-land. Been there, overpaid that.
Sari, problem is somebody there has dropped you into a pigeon-hole and they don’t have the imagination to see what your true status is. But yeah, I used to write e-mails and then take a walk around the department, then go back and edit out things. Good luck.
Oopsie, glad you’re ok, sounds like quite a storm. Glad the toe is doing good.
OK, need to begin thinking about bedtime. All y’all have a good night/good morning.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It is currently 77 degrees, with a heat index of 85. It will feel slightly unpleasant at work today.
No matter - I didn’t venture downstairs anyway!
I love that show! I binge-watched the series a few years back. The episode about the homeless vet dying in the one character’s donated overcoat - it tore me up! Time to rewatch, methinks…
Same here, altho the one near us wasn’t all that good. We went a couple of times and at best, it was mediocre. Now it’s gone. It won’t be missed as much as the BBQ place we liked, which has been replaced by a rather pricey Italian place (owned, coincidentally, by the owners of The Cow and The Fish, which also went belly up during the plague.)
As I was sorting some papers, I came across a couple of FCD’s evals from some years back. This advice would have served him well. His engineering and planning was praised, but on two different occasions, his boss mentioned his “email blasts.” He still does it, but maybe he’s mellowed a bit? I dunno - I was never a recipient.
doggio - it’s starting hot and hyoomid here also. I’m meeting my daughter at the playground around 8 to claim Roxy, but I don’t intend to stay there long. Definitely no more than 2 hours. Then home to a/c!
Weather guesser says a “cold front” is coming thru this weekend. Our highs will plummet to the mid-80s! Then again, it’s August - I’ll take what I can get. Speaking of which, today I’m supposed to get the spray to keep critters from eating the wires and hoses in the truck. As long as FCD is driving it daily, we don’t need the spray, but once he gets his car back… Anyway, that’s today’s big excitement. Rah!
Happy Thursday!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 72 Amurrkin out and N.O.S. with a predicted high of 93 with maybe some rain this afternoon/evenin’, or not. If’n I motivate I shall achieve mowage. If’n I don’t, well, I won’t achieve mowage. I should, however. I donwanna, however. My life is fraught with such difficult decisions! Sup shall be burgers ‘n fixin’s with fries due to a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for a grilled burger.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah,
Happy Thursday Y’all!
Morning all. Got all the ID labels done for my soccer Saturday, so I should be able to ID 96 boys (if everyone shows up), Now got to write an e-mail to some coaches with delinquent training, may have to use the 'walk around department–in this case, walk around Wal-Mart)–to not be rude. Used the last underwear yesterday so shorts and socks are currently in the dryer and shirts and other outerwear are in the washer.
And that (outside of Wal-Mart trip) is about as much activity as I plan. Except for the soccer training tonight.
OK, best be about some stuff. All y’all have a good Thorsdays (it is Thorsday, isn’t it? Days are starting to get blurry…)
I slept through Fran. Very soundly. I woke up to discover the dam for Lake Raleigh had burst, and the high tension power lines on the upper side of Lake Wheeler Rd had fallen, effectively stranding me. Luckily, I lived across the street from Dix hospital, so I had power that evening.
I was in a town house off of Kaplin that back up to the Beltline during Floyd. I woke up to find a truck in my back yard. Apparently, the beer consumed by the college kids up the street during their hurricane party told them that mudding int eh CP&L right of way during a hurricane was a good idea. Too bad they were unaware of the creek that ran through there. My brother and I enjoyed the show as they tried to get their truck unstuck.
waves hi
I just got a fancy fan which makes very little noise, because it’s ridiculously hot here. Right now the fan says we’re at 32ºC (90F); for a location whose highest temperature between the late 1960s and 2018’s heat waves was 29ºC (85F) that’s “we’re dying here”. Conversion done to the level of precision normal people speak in, unlike those in movies and books where translation magically produces three decimals.
I may even find out how is the local public pool supposed to work in terms of where to enter the facilities and stuff like that. In over 13 years of officially living here I still haven’t bothered and ok, most of that time I was bouncing around Western Europe but jeez…
We left the playground after about 30 minutes. No one was there and thanks to last night’s rain, all the equipment was wet. So we’re in the basement having a breakfast picnic. Roxy hadn’t eaten, so she was ready for a PB&J and milk.
Not sure what the rest of the morning will hold, but I expect it will be exciting!!
Afternoon, mumpers! It’s 21C/70F here today, computer says “partly sunny” but doesn’t specify which part. It doesn’t feel that hot, I know because I ventured out to the plague pits in order to post something back to mum’s solicitor. When I got back, I felt like I wanted to hose myself down - something about our little shopping precinct just makes me feel all icky.
Irk is being irksome, got a massive spreadsheet to check today so I can send it back and get some work started on our virtual learning site, but I have to check every last detail on the spreadsheet first. I Don Twanna!
Nava Don’t be a stranger! Good to hear you’ve got something to help with the excessive temperatures. We hit 30 degrees over here and the poor cats almost melted.
nellie good to hear you have got the IRS on the run at last. I hope they at least send you a heartfelt apology.
I’ve set up the automated cat-feeding devices so that Whisper can try it out, he isn’t used to them so it’s a bit of a novelty for him. I’ve recorded a message that calls his name and tells him it’s time for food. He opened his eyes, got up, turned round and settled down for a sleep instead. Never mind, he’ll get the message when he’s hungry. It’ll keep the food supply going as the catsitter can only visit once a day while we’re away.
Looking forward to the end of the work day, only 1.5hrs to go as I plan to finish at 4pm every day this week. Hurrah!
Yesterday’s drive was very nice and I took a lot of pictures. None would win any awards, need to think about composition, etc. more, but the camera is old and I haven’t used it regularly in eons. There are much better cameras out there now, but can’t see spending any money on a new camera at the moment.
The drive could have lasted longer, but the husband was hungry and wanted to find something to eat. I usually pack a cooler with hogies and snacks for outings like yesterday’s, but I totally spaced. Consequently, I didn’t get to one of the locations I had in mind, but all the same, it was a nice drive followed by a late lunch.
We started the drive by taking Hwy 410 and the John Mather Memorial Highway up to the summit of Chinook Pass. From there, we backtracked a little way and took Cayuse Pass and when we reached the fork in the road for Mt Rainier National Park or the town of Packwood, we opted to go through the park and take Steven’s Canyon to Paradise. The original plan was to get to Paradise and then loop the long way around and head over to Sunrise. However, when arrived where would turn to Paradise or Longmire, the husband was hangry and wanted to find food. So, we turned left toward Longmire and then out of the park. Frankly, I was amazed at how crowded the park was in the middle of the week. Just about every trailhead parking area was jam-packed, with cars parked alongside the road when there wasn’t space in the official parking areas. I mean it’s great that people are appreciating the beauty to be had up there, but on the other hand, I miss the less crowded days up there. It used to be, you could head up to the park and not be faced with such crowds except for maybe at Paradise because it’s a visitor center with exhibits, food, etc. Still, I didn’t let it ruin my day. The weather was stunning, and the drive was pleasant. It wasn’t so bad that my drive was impacted by traffic, so I’ll take that as a win. On the other hand, I know I won’t be going there on a weekend.
It’s supposed to reach around 96 to 98 degrees today. I’m not super thrilled about that. Tomorrow we’re supposed to see 100 and I’m even less thrilled about that. I need to mow the lawn and turn on the sprinkler after I mow it. That’ll happen around 8:00 am.
For now, I’ll drink coffee and read the news.
nellie, I’m glad the IRS thing will be sorted.
nava, good to see you.
Sitting at my desk at work, waiting for classes to start. Wish me luck!
We are going to have to spend a lot of time this year teaching the kids to be human again. After a year and a half of distance learning, I’m afraid a number of them have gone feral. It’s going to be…interesting, to say the least.
Small was light, so I was helping pull cages for the 200 line. There were fans, which was good. When I got home at 10:00, it was 85 degrees, and the heat index was 99. Gordie got a very short walk.

I slept through Fran. Very soundly
I was on the 3rd floor of a building, so Fran rocked me to sleep. I was on Six Forks for Floyd, so I got to watch Crabtree creek flood.

As long as they don’t start singing

Was Fran the one in '98? (furious googling) Nope, I was thinking of Bonnie. I had just moved to Wilmington, NC when that one hit. Maybe a week before. The eye actually passed over us and we went on a little explore. Eerie.
I woke up exhausted. I don’t know why. It feels like the ol’ lupus fatigue, but I’m in remission, so that can’t be it. I slept well and for over 8 hours. Beats me…if I let it.

nellie good to hear you have got the IRS on the run at last.
Thanks! I’m not sure I do, though. I need a form the company was supposed to have sent me in 2019. Right now it’s like the doctor has said, “Nellie, I think I know what’s going on here, but I can’t tell for sure without the MRI.” Only it’ll take up to two weeks to GET the MRI. I’m not too impressed with the annuity company. Ol’ Snoopy let me down. (He is/was in their ads.)

I’m supposed to get the spray to keep critters from eating the wires and hoses in the truck. As long as FCD is driving it daily, we don’t need the spray
I need my ignorance fought, please. How often does a car have to be driven to prevent mice? Some years back, I had critters munching on wires in my car, and I was driving it every day. The mechanics said it must’ve happened during the 6 hours I was parked in a field while hiking up a mountain, as there was no food in or around my garage or car at night. I get how running an engine could dislodge mice already there (although they can get in vents and stay comfy), but how does it prevent them? I know there’s an answer, but darned if I can figure it out.
Hi, Nava!

the First Lady travels to Cochran’s Mills, PA, to dedicate a statue of Nellie Bly.
Of course, it made me think of @nelliebly.
Aw, thanks! I try to stay humble about these things.
Howdy all.
Been a busy morning, two loads of laundry done, a quick shopping trip to Big Lots and then Target to buy a small folding table (we used to call it a card table when I was a lad, don’t know if anyone else did), and then home to feast on Cheeseburgers and bananas. On and in between dealt with 2 hours of soccer stuff. So I’m thinking about taking the afternoon off…at least until 5pm when soccer training starts up again…
Nava! Good to see you about these parts again. And given what you say, do not take a job in the Southern United States in July-August…
Taters, sounds like a great trip. I wanted to get out West in 2020 but COVID intervened and then 2021 just didn’t work out, so maybe 2022 I’ll ask you for those directions again.
boo fae, I thought YOU were the automatic cat feeder…
nellie, same thing, days I get my 8 hours, sometimes I just feel so slow… And today, with less than 7 hours, I’m just full of get-up-and-go. Strange things our bodies. And the paperwork must make it through the bowels of bureaucracy…fortunately, the wheels move even slower in the IRS.
OK, burgers have been consumed and more stuff needs to be done, so Onward!!
Take care all.
It was a great trip, Metal Mouse. What I would really like to do, is make a trip like that multi-day trip, but we don’t tend to leave Polar alone for long anymore if we can help it. His anxiety levels have really increased upon my departure anywhere.
I posted some of the pics on my FB page if you want to look at them. I know I’m friends with many of you on FB, but sometimes I receive a request and I’m not sure who the person is, so I don’t accept. If any of you have sent such a request and I didn’t accept, I apologize, but if I can’t place you where I know you from, I won’t accept.
Roxy is on her way home and the house is quiet. She really needed to be out running around but it’s just too bloody hot! Daughter is in the cusp of her 3rd trimester and she’s really uncomfortable. It’s going to be lots worse as her parasite starts putting on weight - he’s still under 2#, but the growth spurt is imminent.
FCD called earlier and we talked a while - he’s really discouraged about being back at work, because they don’t have work for him. He thought they were bringing him back to do design and analysis on a specific project. Turns out they just want him to figure out why two other groups got different answers when they did analysis. Plus so far, he’s mostly just twiddling his thumbs.
He was drafting an email to his boss and the prez of the company - I told him to leave the prez out of it. I suggested some approaches - he doesn’t want to burn bridges. I also assured him that I don’t care if he outright retires right now. We’ve got annuities and a CD, plus my pension and our SS, so we won’t be living under an overpass. My biggest concern is that he’ll get bored. Until his knees are replaced, working in his shop is a non-starter, and I can’t see him sitting around the house doing nothing till spring. So we’ll see what’s up when he gets home.

How often does a car have to be driven to prevent mice?
My understanding is that the odors, the heat, the fact that it isn’t staying in one place all the time make it undesirable for rodentia. But I ordered spray that includes, among other things,
peppermint oil that they hate, theoretically. We shall see.
So, now what? It’s quiet. I need to think about thawing something for supper. And… dunno… Too hot to think…
And, I left a thought out of my reply earlier regarding leaving Polar alone. We obviously have a dog sitter or put him in a kennel when we leave for multiple days. What I meant is we don’t like to leave Polar alone for too long in the course of a day. We came home to a dirty snout and quite a “talking to” upon our return. However, he got too excited and piddled too. He hasn’t done that in years, so it’s obvious he’s having control issues when gets excited.
Ugh, temps are definitely rising towards uncomfortable.
Waiting for the water heater repairman. I have water but it’s not hot. I washed my hair in tepid water this morning, and did dishes by heating water in a kettle. I’ll live, but only for a day.
