Gettysdope V: The Return of Bacon Salt

danceswithcats has the directions page and a link to a map of the park, but I think MsRobyn may have it as well. If she checks in here this evening, I’m sure she’ll post the pertinant info.
dances is out of town till Tuesday morning, but I’m sure he’ll get the info out as soon as he gets home.

It is not far at all. About five minutes by car, IIRC.

“The Gettysburg Area Recreation Park”
http://www.gettysburg-pa.gov/parks_recreation/pavilion_rentals.htm

If you look on mapquest or some other Gettysburg map, look for Gettysburg Hospital. Follow Long Lane southwest a couple of blocks and the park is on the right.

Battlefield Park and the museum, etc. are all fairly close.

Danceswithcats has a good set of directions which I’m sure he will post soon.

I will be coming. I’m not sure what food I’ll be bringing. I won’t be bringing anyone.

Do people want to do like we’ve done before, where everybody brings books or other items that they want to get rid of? We can use one of the picnic tables to put these items on. Anything that doesn’t get taken I will bring home and eventually donate to something.

Wendell, it looks like we’ll have plenty of food, but we still need things like paper plates and cups and flatware, if you’d rather pick up that sort of thing.

I can bring some books and CDs that are just taking up space. A book exchange is always fun, IMO.

How many plates, cups, and items of silverware are needed? I’ll do one of them and some food.

Scroll up to the most recent Official List to see how many are coming. Sounds like some people are bringing messy stuff, and we’re bringing chili, so you should probably get some sturdy plates.

I do, in fact, have the directions.

Gettysdope directions

From Phila:
PA turnpike westbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit (was I-17, now I-236), take US-15 south. Take ramp right onto York Street, US-30 west. Follow US-30 into the center of town to a circle. Go halfway around the circle, continuing to follow US-30, street name now Chambersburg Street. Go through the first light, and turn left at the second light onto Franklin Street, and proceed south. Franklin Street becomes Long Lane at Breckenridge Street, and the park is to your right. We’re in the Firemen’s pavilion, which is to the right of the brick administration building on your right.

From Pittsburgh:
PA turnpike eastbound to Gettysburg Pike US-15 exit. After that, follow above.

From Washington:
I-495 inner loop to I-270 towards Frederick, MD. Follow US-15 north, into PA. Take exit for PA-134/Taneytown Road towards Gettysburg. At the traffic light where PA-134 crosses US-15 Business/Steinwehr Avenue, the name changes to Washington Street. Proceed north two blocks and turn left on Gettys Street, which will dead end at Long Lane. Turn right and then left into the parking area in front of the administration building.

Park recon: Several ballfields, playground equipment such as swings, slides, and the like for kidlets. Three pavilions, called Kiwanis, Lions, and Firemen’s. The first two are located closest to Long Lane & Queens Street, with the latter a block North at Long Lane & Gettys Street. I checked out the Firemen’s pavilion (natch) and it contains 10 large picnic tables which should accommodate 6 BPT* with comfort. The other two looked quite similar from the parking area.

For those who wondered about purchasing foodstuffs locally-there is a Kennies Shur-Fine supermarket on Middle Street between West and Franklin Streets, less than ¼ mile away. Those folks using the Philly directions will pass a Giant supermarket on US-30 fairly close to US-15.

Any Dopers who would like a backup contact can email for my cell phone number: danceswithcats@att.net

*BPT=butts per table

I’m afraid I’ve gone from a definite to a maybe, and if I do show up I’ll probably be bringing the Rice Krispie treats.

Ingredients for guacamole and seven-layer dip have been purchased and are awaiting final assembly. I will gather the relevant appliances and bring them, as well.

Mama Zappa, whenever means whenever. Traditionally, danceswithcats, bibliocat and I (along with Airman) tend to be the first ones there to set up, followed by jayjay and supervenusfreak. After that, people start drifting in whenever they get there. We’re flexible that way.

Robin

Tell me how many plates to bring and I’ll bring that many.

My son is six, so he’s one of the younger kids. Mudgirl, IIRC is 8 or 9.

Speaking of which, the kidlet has a soccer game that morning, so he and Airman will be along presently. I, OTOH, will be in Gettysburg setting up.

Wendell, plan on bringing around 100 of everything – plates, bowls and tableware. This will allow for clean plates for dessert, plus any extras that may be needed.

Robin

Mama Zappa My son is 8 and my daughter is 11. My daughter was doing well helping to entertain a 3 year old on Saturday.

I plan on bringing along a few plates, cups, and silverware for us early arrivals. I have some extras on hand here and it’s no problem for me to do it.

The book/cd/movie exchange table sounds like a good idea. I will be more than happy to bring a few things along to trade. Heck, maybe Jayjay might be persuaded to part with a few things too…

Everyone,

I have held off as long as I can, but I am simply not going to be able to come to the Gettysdope.

So, no Kimche, sorry.

Perhaps next year.

Tris

Dammit. We demand kimche!

See you next year.

Robin

I have 75 plates, 75 bowls, and 72 sets of silverware. I have plenty of napkins too.

Somehow, this post escaped me until just now. First off, worry not about the name pronunciation. Even I pronounce it that way now.
About mudgirl, nah, no bubble wrap. I just let her get filthy. She’s washable. I do, however, since I learned my lesson the first year, bring a change of clothes for the ride home! :stuck_out_tongue:

OK, folks, change of plans from me: Several weeks ago, my family and I had a cook-out at Miss Gypsy’s house, and she served the very best mac and cheese I’d ever eaten. I nagged her until she gave up the recipe. I’ve taken it a couple of other places, to mucho compliments.

So, we seem to be all good in the main dish department, and in the dessert department of course. So I’ve decided to bring Miss Gypsy’s Famous Mac And Cheese™. I will make and bake it the day before, then put the whole thing in my Crock Pot so it can keep warm all day.

So, what time is everyone getting there?? I am going to try to make it. Right now it’s about 50/50. I will check back in and let you know!

Minor change of food plan: Due to prep-time issues, I will bring gefilte kebobs (grilling required) instead of the q’rab cakes.

The brownies and kosher dogs are still coming with me.
