Gilmore Girls 10/17

I noticed that there are less and less people watching Gilmore Girls nowadays, and I don’t blame them. The show is so dragged out now, I am actually hoping they wrap it up before it’s complete crap. I know the WB didn’t have the habit of giving crappy shows a mercy killing as long as they bring in the viewers (I swear, people watch 7th Heaven just to laugh at how bad it is) but I’m hoping the NEW CW will be smarter.

Anyway, even though the show isn’t as good or witty or filled with fast talking girls as it used to be, it’s still nice to see how Lorelai can screw up her love life again. I know we’re all hoping that she’ll finally stay with Chris and BE HAPPY for once… but this is also a drama show, so we’re bound to see a fight or two between them.

I don’t like Chris as a character. I just realised how smarmy and arrogant he is. Of course, Lorelai is the same type of person, but for some reason, on a woman, it’s gusty and witty, on a man, it’s arrogant and grating. Still, Lorelai and Chris are a good match. They’re able to communicate with each other without the fear and resentment that Lorelai and Luke seemed to have.

It looks like they’re trying to introduce April as a character on the show now, instead of just using her as a plot line for Luke. I really hope not though, because I like smart mouth kids who have the wisdom of adults as much as I like arrogant and smarmy men. And I hope that Luke and April’s mom (forgot her name!) don’t “give it another try”, because Luke is nowhere near ready to date. He probably shouldn’t have gone after Lorelai in the first place, not just because they’re not a good combo, but also because Luke has A LOT of issues to work out before he should jump into a relationship, the most obvious issue being his completely lack of consideration for anyone other than himself.

Oh, and it seems like Lorelai made two new friends. Two new fast talkers that go a mile a minute. I’m not sure whether I like them yet or not, but it looks like they’re trying to introduce more new characters to give the show some possible plot lines in the future.

By Lorelei making new friends you mean the Lorelei that is called Rory, right?

While I’ve really gotten fed up with all of the characters this season, I saw a little glimmer of the past when Lorelei got the phone call about her mom being in jail. Lauren Graham owns that part, and that fact resurfaced on the line “This night just keeps getting better and better!”. Just watch her face when she delivers that line, and while she’s on the phone up to that point.

Luke has got to have someone to play off of - so I think that’s why April has returned. Maybe she will set him up with someone (her teacher?), but he’s got someone intelligent to bounce lines off of. There’s no way any of that could happen in the diner with his customers. It has to be someone close to him. April is a believable choice for that. And I never thought that she was that bad of a character either. Her mother, though, really gets on my nerves. (She should have stayed in California as Luke’s almost-sister-in-law, Jesse’s dad’s girlfriend.)

I know what you mean about Christopher being grating. I’ve never liked him. But he has calmed down a lot since the first couple of seasons, and has become more stable and less about himself. I think that it can be plausibly shown that he and Lorelei should be together. We might not like it, but I think she really doesn’t have a choice anymore - there are a lot of smoking bridge foundations scattered along the path that Lorelei has traveled.

I’d say that this was the best episode of this season. Which puts it near the top of the bottom of all the rest of them.

I never liked Chris; smarmy is about right. Lately, I’ve been liking Lorelai less and less so I’m kind of hoping they do end up together. I also like April’s mom so part of me wants her and Luke to end up together but having two people end up with people that they had kids with in high school seems a bit ridiculous.

I’m a bit curious where Rory’s plotline is headed. There are a few places that I don’t want it to go, but we’ll see.

The best part of last night’s show, for me, was the Closed Captioner who changed Cole Porter’s lyrics to:

“You can’t blame me for feeling avarice.”

Which gives both “'Swonderful” and the scene in the car whole new meanings.

Rory’s two new friends were annoying - and were they freshmen or upperclassmen. No one seemed to know. That’s one of those pesky details the writers should have a clue about (or not mention. Either works).

I don’t like April’s mom. Also, it makes no sense for a woman who owns the store that she owns to have a daughter who loves Target. That’s like Rory’s favorite hotel being “Motel 6.”

19 more episodes, just to see what happens.

I only remember Anna’s store selling clothes and accessories. No reason a girl can’t love Target for housewares.

I don’t mind Lorelai and Chris. At least she looks like she’s having fun. Lorelai and Luke was so depressing. Five years of buildup for *that * trainwreck?

Oops, yes, I meant Rory (Lorelai the third) not grown up Lorelai who’s made new friends. I believe they are the same age as Rory as one of them briefly mentioned being in the same class as Paris during Freshman year.

I can understand why April would like Target. The things her mother sell are unique one of a kind items whereas things at Target are mass produced. Maybe the 12 year old in her wants to be just like everybody else, even if she tries (or maybe doesn’t try) to be an oddball. It was a little funny how Luke has never been to Target before. It’s not like it’s she was asking him to shop at Tiffany. I would think a guy like Luke would love the anonymity and mass production of Target.

I hope Lane plays a bigger part this season. Although her pregnancy plot line could be seen a mile away, I still love how neurotic she is. She’s neurotic in a “ha ha” kind of way, and not in Rory’s “Shut the fuck up” kind of way.

Oooh, and I can’t believe the prison thing with Emily. It was hilarious, and about time Emily got put in the situation where she can’t manipulate things and put herself in the position of power. I wish they’d shown more humiliation on her part, after so many years of seeing her belittle Lorelai (intentionally or not) it was wonderful to see her struggle to maintain just a little bit of dignity.

I think that Rory’s new friends, the “Paris Gellar” worshippers, are really a pale copy of Paris’ prep school allies.

That said, I have to say that I really enjoyed the show. The movie date was very romantic. April is definitely growing on me, as is Anna. I was also waiting for Emily to pull a Zsa Zsa on the cop. Good stuff!

I was thinking the same thing, supervenusfreak. The art students reminded me so much of Madeleine and Louise. But, perhaps to a fault, I liked Madeleine and Louise.

Watching Emily smartmout the cop amused me somewhat.

But, you know, I came straight out of season 4 into this one. That season, I thought, was marginally weak anyhow, so I don’t have high expectations.

I thought the Emily getting pulled over for cell phone use really funny, especially since I live in Connecticut and have, more than once, thrown my cell phone at my passenger as a cop drove by…

Anyhoo, I still wonder why that story line was written at all- just for a gag? I wonder if one of the writers had this happen to hom/her and wanted to spoof on it.

It just seemed so… random. And funny.

Hated Rory’s new buddies.

Can’t stand April- is she a child-Rory substitute- clever and articulate etc?

I like Chris and Lorelei and the movie date was great!

I kind of like April, but she really reminds me of a 13-year-old Bebe Neuwirth…

April was one of the few things I really liked about last season. I want her as a regular this season. You can drop the Stars Hollow townies with the exception of the band they haven’t provided any good laughs or stories for seasons now.

I think the phone arrest is going to serve as an embarassment story for Richard now that he is “faculty” at Yale.

I don’t understand that hate for the new sidekicks. Babydoll dress was a typical Palladino character.
Anyone remember back in the Chilton days when they introduced that fellow Poof washout who was clearly supposed to become Rorys friend and then never appeared again?

Ugh, I completely forgot. I dislike her and this is precisely why I dislike her. She’s like a little Rory if Rory had been annoying.

I don’t understand all of the hatred for April (do you guys go around kicking puppies :D?) I admit that I wasn’t sure about April as a plot device when she was introduced. But as a character, I really like her. I think she’s a good foil for Luke, and I think the similarities to Rory are superficial. Although we haven’t seen much of it, I get the impression that April and Anna’s relationship is different than that of Rory and Lorelai.

Oh, and I thought Emily’s arrest was funny too.
