The phone call between Lorelei and Emily was classic, old-school Palladino writing. I started feeling good about the show again, thinking they’ve once again found the right path for the show.
But, for me, sadly, it didn’t last too long past the opening credits. I really thought that April forgot her lunch intentionally so that she could introduce Luke to her biology (chemistry?)(some other subject?) teacher, but again was pleasantly surprised when she came back for it.
Luke getting out into the dating world again was good, though. I like how he started out being uninterested in Coach Susan, then decided to give it a try after his beat-down of Kirk, and then got stuck in psycho-date lane. (“I think she’s going to remain Coach Bennett.” to April after the date)
You have to love what Rory did to Lorelei and Christopher with the dinner reservations though. Just evil genius that was!
I wish there were more Star’s Hollow stuff going on still. The Kirk and Lulu and the Sukie/Michel/cheating on Jackson’s eggplant stuff was good, but we need more of the local characters coming into play. That’s part of what I’ve always loved about the show.
Now, on the fashion front, what was up with that dress Lorelei was wearing at Yale? Hid. E. Ous! Yes, I really am gay enough to have made many comments about the ugly dress during the show, why do you ask?
monica, The main storyline was Lorelai and Chris going to parent’s day at Yale. Rory says that she will be busy on the paper but she can have lunch with them. Lorelei runs into Emily who mentions that she and Richard are taking Rory to dinner at a fancy restaurant where the crème brulé is to die for. Lorelei is a little miffed. “It’s not grandparents day.” Emily says that she an Richard attend every year for Rory’s sake. “Why are you here, this is the type of event that you mock.” Lorelei denies being a mocking parents day, although that’s what she spends the rest of the episode doing. She only came because of Christopher.
Chris, meanwhile, has been in a discussion with other dads during this conversation. Chris can only stand silent as the other dads describe all the things that they did for their kids as they grew up. Lorelei and Chris go to the paper to pick up Rory who introduces them to the staff. Chris suddenly invites everyone to lunch. Lorelei suggests they go to a fancy restaurant where the crème brulé is to die for. At lunch, Chris tries too hard to be Rory’s fun dad. Suddenly the cell phones of the staff all ring. They get messages that students have taken over a building. Rory starts giving out reporting assignments. But the staff wants to stay for the crème brulé. Bossy Rory orders everyone to go.
Kirk tells Luke that his girlfriend is smothering him. He is going to drop her inspired by Luke’s example. This inspires Luke to accept an invitation to go on a date with April’s swimming instructor. It doesn’t work out. She’s vegan.
A new farmer comes by with free vegetable samples. Sukie doesn’t want to take them but he is friendly and insistent. Sukie can not keep herself from preparing a dish which her staff says is the best she ever made.
Towards evening Lorelei tells Chris how she is satisfied that she won the day since they got to spend a little time at lunch with Rory and Rory is too busy with the paper to go to dinner with Richard and Emily. They stop by the paper with donuts and coffee. Rory tells them that she cancelled diner with Emily but mentioned that Lorelei and Chris were free to go in her place.
monica missing from the excellent recap Sir Prize provided - Luke goes to pick up April at swim practice. He meets her coach, who talkks Luke into taking an adult swim class. He goes, and she obviously hits on him, and gives him her phone number. Luke doesn’t seem too enthused. Whne he gets to the diner, Kirk and LuLu are there. She leaves (goes to work?), and Kirk starts in on how she’s smothering him (“I go to a movie, and who is sitting beside me? LuLu. I go out to eat, and who’s right across the table from me? LuLu. I sit on the couch at home and who is right up against me on the couch?” “Your mother?” “Yes, but she respects my boundaries. And LuLu.”) Luke tells Kirk that he’s the luckiest man in the world to have LuLu so interested, and he can’t figure out what she sees in Kirk. He tells Kirk if he dumps LuLu, he will break every bone in his body. And then he calls the swim coach.
She takes him to a vegan restaurant, and within the first three minutes has gone into psycho obsessive region of her behavior. The waitrress comes by and asks if anyone wants a drink, and it’s all Luke can do not to order enough shots of tequila to drive himself into a coma.
