Could someone fill me in on what happened? There was some rain somewhere in the state so we were treated to 20 minutes of doppeler radar, then 10 seconds of show, interrupted by 4 minutes of commercial then 10 more seconds of show.
I saw up until Mrs. Kim freaked out because Luke wouldn’t be at the wedding (when they were moving the big Buddha statues in), then I saw 10 seconds of Mrs. Kim taking Lane aside and saying “I have something…” (nothing after that) then Lorelai and Chris talking at the wedding about how Rory will be next.
I saw everything after the guests emerging from the wedding, including the most painful speech ever by Lorelai.
I figured out that Logan (what is it with L names on this show anyway: Logan, Lorelai x 2, Lane, Luke) would get hurt a mile away and Rory will maybe FINALLY reconcile her relationship (one way or another) with Logan in the next episode or so. I’m sick of Rory/Logan drama.
Mrs. Kim’s mother decided to come to the wedding from Korea, and to hide the fact that she’d converted from Buddhism to Seventh Day Aventist (how ironic, considering Mrs. Kim’s mission to convert others), they converted the house into a Buddhist home and had a fake wedding for her, before the real wedding. After the real wedding, all of their Korean friends grabbed meals at the reception, dropped checks into a bag for Lane, and left, along with her mother, and then the party started. Lorelai was looking through Rory’s photos on her digital camera and had a hissy fit after seeing through it that Rory and April were friends now, and that’s about where you picked it up again.
It starts out with Rory at the paper office - she’s late for the wedding. A couple of the girlfriends of Logan’s buddies come in and say the’re flying to Costa Rica to meet up wioth the boys. Rory says she can’t come because of the wedding. Mrs. Kim has a bunch of people making food, and won’t let Lane come down. Lorelei delivers the wedding dress, and Mrs. Kim doesn’t bat an eye when it’s totally different. She mentions something about it not looking that way before, but gets a phone call saying her mother is coming from Korea for the wedding. She’s freaked out. and absently says she’ll see Luke and Lorelei at the wedding. Lorelei says Luke’s out of town, so she’ll be going stag. Mrs. Kim says she can’t come without an escort, because at her age and with the way she dresses people will think she’s a hooker (which will reflect badly on the Kims). Lorelei asks Michel to be her escort. Rory shows up to hang out with Lane and go with her to her bachelorette party ( which is to include seeing full-frontal Richard Gere in American Gigelo). The Kims are busy Buddhisting their house in preparation for the coming on Mrs. Kim’s mother, who is unaware her daughter is now a 7th Day Adventist. Apparently Mrs. Kim isn’t able to stand up to her mother any more than Lane was. The bachelorette party meets up with the bachelor party when they’re too late for the movie and proceeds to a basement rec room to continue the party together. YEAH! Foosball and beer! The following day, Michel backs out of the wedding because he has been offered last-minute Celine Dion tickets. Rory is texting with Christopher and asks him to escort her. Mrs. Kim holds a Buddhist wedding at the now-Buddhist house. Lane and what’s-his-name dress in traditional clothes and they have the wedding. Mrs. Kim’s mother storms out during the wedding (I didn’t understand why) and leaves. as soon as the wedding is over, everyone runs to the church for the Christian wedding, as the church only seats 56. After the wedding the reception buffet is set up and the Koreans all get to-go boxes and drop off checks with Lane. Mrs. Kim says she’s tired and will be going to bed and will wear earplugs (tacitly approving the party goings-on). During the party the best man and Rory give speeches and then Lorelei gives a drunken speech about everyone else gets married but she doesn’t get to have one. Christopher takes Lorelei home and Rory gets a call that Logan’s been hurt and is being airlifted to a hospital in NY. She leaves and Christopher carries Lorelei up to bed. She’s awakened by Luke calling her and Christopher’s sleeping in the chair by her bed. He slips out as she’s talking to Luke.
Lane: I just found out that I am only the latest in a line of Kim women who hide their real lives from their mothers under floorboards!
Sookie: Why are we running?
Lorelai: 58 seats, 62 Koreans!
Lane: When did you start double dressing? And Avril Lavigne?!?!?
Keiko: *Avril Lavigne rocks! You’re such a snob! If it’s not Joy Division, you don’t like it. Well, you can’t *dance ** to Joy Division!
Possibly the best moment on this show EVER is when Mrs. Kim has the girls running through the house taking down the crosses and bibles and hiding them under the floorboards upstairs.
I really cracked up when Mrs. Kim told Lorelei that she had to have a male escort for the wedding and “Kirk doesn’t count.” Also, I really wanted to see how much Sukie’s naughty cookies had risen. I’m also kinda hoping that the relationship with the Korean girl and band guy is developed. They’re kinda cute together. Just wish I could remember their names.
I figured the thing with Logan and the accident would happen. Next week should be a real Rory at the bedside tearjerker. I’m sure we can look for her to have large screaming fits at the hospital. Paris will just have to figure into this somehow. We just cannot have large theatrics and drama without Paris, now can we? I’m wondering how Luke’s gonna take it when he finds out Christopher spent the night at Lorelei’s? You know he’ll find out. It would not have been a part of last night’s show if he wasn’t going to find out. I still say, I’m at the point now where I want Luke and Lorelei to either get married or end things. Just do it or drop this plot line. It’s wearing real thin with me.
Meanwhile, even though it wasn’t mentioned last night, I wonder how Emily and Richard are doing with their Star’s Hollow porperty hunt.
I thought that was a really nice moment when the reunited Hep Alien (still can’t stand that name) performed “I’m A Believer” at the reception. They did a good job, too.
You know, even though I can’t stand most of the current plotlines (Luke being all weird about April, Lorelai feeling left out and spending time with Christopher, Richard and Emily looking at Stars Hollow properties, anything involving Logan), I enjoyed last night’s episode. You know why? Because I wish the show had dropped Rory and started following Lane and the band about a year or so ago. This show could always use more Lane, more Hep Alien, and a lot more Mrs. Kim. And maybe some more Michel dancing. Yes, definitely more Michel dancing.
I really enjoyed last night - and I finally figured out why. No Luke, no Logan, no melodramatic histrionics with the Lorelais’ relationships. Last night was light, funny, and Lorelai had CHEMISTRY with Christopher - which she seems to be sorely lacking with Luke this season.
Part of me was hoping that she and Chris would end up in bed together. Anything to stop this terrible second-rate carnival roller coaster relationship that she and Luke have. She’s so ANIMATED with Chris - she sparkles again. With Luke, she’s a shell of herself, and I really hate that. It’s not Lorelai. Last night was a glimpse of the real Lorelai again.
Michel dancing was certainly a highlight - that was great. And ElzaHub kept saying “58 seats and 62 Koreans!” at random moments last night .
The stuff with Mrs. Kim was fantastic - it was nice to see her flustered by something. Loved the sex talk - that was classic.
Nobody knows for sure. Either they want to move closer to Lorelai now that she & Luke are getting married (maybe) and there might be more grandchildren, or they’re shopping for a wedding present for L & L.
I am beginning to think that the writers can write really rich, detailed, believable women - but fall flat when trying to write similarly compelling men. Logan, Luke, Kirk, Christopher, Jess, all Lane’s bandmates except Sebastian Bach, Rory’s first boyfriend(?); the show just dies when any of them are involved with the show (except Kirk, who is comic relief). The only exception is Richard. He seems more fully realized to me.
A few questions:
Has Michel’s sexual orientation ever been established?
Does anyone speak enough Korean or know somewhere on the web so that we can get the general context of the mid-wedding Kim matriarch’s fued?
I want to see more of Lane’s cousin. Give Keiko her own episode/ plot line/ spin-off. Anyone who can put Lane “the music snob” (who plays in a band that performs Monkees songs and ‘Hollaback Girl’) is OK in my book.
I am pretty much in love with Keiko the Avril Lavigne loving exchange student. Her delivery of every line is hilarious. I like that her and Brian got some heavy snogging in.
Lorelai’s drunken speech was painful, squirm worthy.
I think it’s pretty clear now that by the end of the next season (most likely the last) Lor and Chris will be together and Luke will end up with Mama Nardini.
I used to get annoyed at the Hep Alien (second only to Neutral Milk Hotel as the worst band name ever) stories but now all the characters are so well written I look forward to it.
Mrs. Kim’s advice to Lane about the what happens on a wedding night was funny and sad. No wonder Mr.s Kim is the way she is… she has gotten laid in 22 years.
This was a really good episode because for once the story was fun AND advanced the characters. Where lately the episodes have been either resets or character drama.
Agree on Lorelei’s speech…it was one of those things where you know what’s going to happen from the moment she gets up out of the chair and you debate with yourself whether you can stand to actually watch it or not.
Have you ever tried going to Television Without Pity ? I’ve been reading it for years. Any time I miss GG (like last week when Queen was on American Idol) I go there to catch up.
I dreamed about Lane’s wedding last night and I had to drive the guy played by Sebastian Bach to the church! What was that all about? Too much Gilmore Girls?
For the record, Lane’s cousin’s name is Kyon, not Keiko; Keiko is the first name of the actress who plays Lane.
Mrs. Kim’s religious deceptions
Michel’s dance moves
The church sprint
The “talk”
“I’m a Believer” (Is it just me, or is the band getting better?)
Lorelai’s beautifully cringeworthy speech
All in all, one of the best episodes of the season.
I’m still rooting for Luke and Lorelai to work things out, although Luke’s obviously going to have some explaining to do. Lorelai and Chris are great together for as much as 48 hours at a time. Then not.
When I first realized that Mrs. Kim’s mother was coming I guffawed so much that I had to pause the TiVo.
