a) As you know, you’ve spent some time with Mayor Crumlin:
patrolling the local area for him
working with Dorric and Dale to form the basis for an adventuring party
b) You know that Crumlin is the elected representative to govern West Sherwoodshire and that he is a Cleric of Heimdall (=Good alignment.)
You’ve seen him organising trade caravans and dealing fairly with local citizens of all social classes (from peasants to Nobles.)
As you watch Crumlin (aided by the Lawful Good Paladin Versifal) build an adventuring party, you realise that it’s quite a tricky operation:
you need a ‘balanced’ party (at least half should be Fighters + Clerics)
you need to avoid Evil-doers sneaking in
you need to spend time making sure they get trained
you need to give them tasks they can handle (and will learn from)
So you can trust him - and help this party succeed!
When John gets a chance, he will write a note to himself in Lizardman language. He will hide it in any pocket he has or any random bag he has with him.
It will say: “John, learn more about Dorric. And don’t forget.”
No objections from me - the sooner we get things moving the better I say!
Following Crumlin’s comments, perhaps we could help the circus by performing a set-piece combat for them? Plixican could summon some very low-level beasties for Quentin and I to fight provided he kept full control of them. John Smith could create some impressively showman-like displays of fizz-bang magic, while Dorric could tumble and Juggle?
Sadly, I don’t actually get to summon anything until second level. I suppose I could do some tricks with my familiar (who I am mentally connected with)
In fact, Jinx and Sneakerpuss could conceivably put on an act together, but my understanding of familiars is that they would have to be willing to do it, and one of them is a cat.
I think that’s be great too. As I probably won’t be fighting anything in the circus ring then, I suppose I could always help the circus out with some repairs or building using my carpentry skill. Johannes is basically a farm boy at heart, so he’d welcome some good honest toil!
Sounds like we each have to come up with something - a skill or feat - that we can perform in front of an audience then.
I doubt anyone would pay to watch me do any carpentry, so I could always use my skill at singing I suppose. Or maybe I could be the strongman and lift a few heavy things?
Does anyone else have suitable skills they could show off?
Your set-piece combat idea is great - just don’t ‘dilute’ it with a separate circus act. Do the circus act next.
And stuff like carpentry is also a good (separate) idea - not in the Arena, but (like any business) this place needs maintenance.
I’m happy to “fight” then, but I assume the Circus has some trained animals that can play the part as Plixican can’t summon anything? Or maybe they have performers who could fake combat with us?
I swear I forgot about teh Arena part and pictured a proper circus with clowns, trapeze artists and the like! If it’s Arena combat they want, then hells yeah! Bring it on!
Ha. I"m sorry, glee; that bit about Crumlin sounded much more seriously accusatory than I intended it to. I trust our quest-giver man just fine!
If there’s anything combat related Quentin has Display Weapon Prowess, which would seem to be pretty well-suited to wowing the masses. If it would intimidate a foe I assume it would entertain a crowd. So I think even a fake fight would work.
No problem - this is a game to introduce newbies to roleplaying after all.
Display Weapon Prowess by itself would certainly entertain a crowd!*
*if you’ll pardon me stepping out of the game, there was a scene in ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ where a swarthy chap uses a Scimitar to Display Weapon Prowess (then Indiana Jones simply shoots him
Glee, I’m going to be switching email addresses over the next few days so you won’t be able to reach me via that route for a while. I’ll continue to post and participate here on the boards and will send you a new email address sometime soon next week.
