Glees roleplaying game thread

Quentin relaxes a bit at the hobbit’s introduction, and tilts his ear again to the sword at his back.

“I can do a lot of things with this. Put me and the paladin out there and they’ll see what they came to see. As will you… Sir.”

John Smith’s Spellcraft confirms that Jinx is indeed a magical Familiar.

As Sir Cuthbert greets the young adventurers, Crumlin bustles up.
“My apologies, Sir Cuthbert. We haven’t met - but I expect you’ve heard of me. I’m Mayor Crumlin and I thought it would be good for my lads to introduce themselves with performing suggestions for your consideration.”

Crumlin steps back a bit.

ETA: Mayor Crumlin gathers up the remaining adventurers and guides them out of the tent after the others, saying “Let’s all speak to the ringmater-hobbit.”

I am now taking it as read that the entire party is outside with Sir Cuthbert the hobbit, as Glee explained in the companion thread

The gnome nods, a little absently, and smiles up at Sir Cuthbert. “Indeed, there was talk of a display of fighting prowess from the tougher members of the party, and perhaps the good John Smith and myself could get our familiars to put on some kind of show?”. At this, he looks over towards the mage, and Jinx tilts his head to one side on his perch.

“Performing animals are always good entertainment - and ones as well-trained as a wizard’s familiar are far from a common sight,” says Sir Cuthbert. “As to swordplay, as long as no-one forgets what kind of a circus this is…”

John replies, “Oh, I’m sure Sneakerpuss could do something entertaining.”

Sneakerpuss is clearly not amused and gives a stare at John.

John replies, “What? You could…sneak around a bit?”

“Sir Cuthbert, I don’t know that performing is going to give you the best use of my particular skills, but I would be happy to work something out with you.” (Thieves Cant) “We can discuss the particulars in the cant if you are more comfortable, since you indicated you have some quiet business you might need taken care of.”

Dale would like to volunteer his service at the circus as a healer-- there are always injuries around such a risky profession, after all.

A tall burly bearded man strides over to Sir Cuthbert and the adventurers.
He booms “Aha, Sir Cuthbert! More chaps to help us out?”

Without waiting for a reply, he turns to the party.
“Jornilsson’s my name - Arena combat’s my game!
Some of you lot look likely lads for an entertaining display of combat. What Skills can you offer?
Remember a couple of chaps cautiously sparring is not enough for this Arena.”

Johannes gives a broad smile and says “Oh, I think we can do better than a bit of sparring. I’m ready to give the crowds a real spectacle, and I’m sure my companion Quentin here would relish the chance to show what he can do! I’m sure you have something suitably challenging in mind?”

Sneakerpuss is still giving John the cat-equivalent of the evil eye.

“Well, then…I suppose I could offer some magic to your cirucs. Or, if you like, I’d be willing to teach some of the basics of Lizardmen speech if you prefer.”

Dorric continues, out loud in common “If it comes to it I could probably make a passably good language instructor myself. I speak hobbit, Dwarf, Elf and Orc. I could also make a fairly presentable Master of Ceremonies for any displays that my companions here would engage in.”

Dale will find himself a nice, clean area to serve as a medic’s area, bless the area for Lugh, and prepare for the day’s events. He’s preparing two Cure Light Wounds and one Identify Magic for the day.

As soon as he gets the chance, Quentin’s going to show everyone what he can do with the two-handed sword, either going right after who/whatever is put in front of him, or by making a display of it in a sparring match / exhibition.

Jornilsson beams happily.
“Jolly good - I shall put on your acts as soon as I can.”

(He confers briefly with Sir Cuthbert and continues.)

"Right, here’s what we’ll pay you for.

John and Plixican, I’ll get some chaps to bash out a tune, whilst your Cat and Crow appear in the Arena. The crowd will enjoy it if the Cat almost catches the Crow - but never does. (remember there are kiddies watching!)
Make it…"

(He hesitates pauses to ask Sir Cuthbert a question.)

"…elegant!

Dale, you stick with my healers. They rush on when somebody needs them."

(He beckons over a Cleric of Heimdall.)

“Eric, this is Dale. He’s got Cures. Show him the ropes.”

(Eric smiles at Dale and asks him if he’s got First Aid as it’s good if applied straight after a nasty wound. Eric then notices Mayor Crumlin and bows to him.)

“John, once you’ve done your stuff with your Cat, teach the crowd a few words of Lizardman. No rude stuff! Make it a chant - any ideas?
Dorric, you follow him with the same idea. But no Orc words. How about Elf. that’s…”

(He hesitates pauses to ask Sir Cuthbert a question.)

"…elegant!

Quentin, you display your Two-Handed Sword prowess. The crowd loves a good waggle!"

Jornilsson thinks a bit more.

"Dorric, thanks for the offer about Ringmaster. But we’ve got Sir Cuthbert for that - and nobody’s better than him.
Why he’s got a proper costume and everything!

Johannes, you’ve got jolly decent armour. You should be in our parade! Look tough, smile and stuff like that. You do know how to behave right, don’t you?"

Johannesburg says “Well I may still be a simple farm boy at heart but I am fortunate in that my lord was able to install in me the appropriate graces and etiquette!”

Jornilsson and Cuthbert thank the party for joining in and then briskly arrange the next show in the Circus Arena.
(Apparently there is no combat currently scheduled in the Gladiator Arena.)

The stylish show opens with a parade, led by Ringmaster Sir Cuthbert.
Apart from Quentin (holding up his Two-handed Sword), Johnannes (looking suitably charming and well-equipped), John Smith + Plixican (showing their animal companions), there are the healers (including both Dale and Eric), gladiators (some with net + trident; some with short sword and shield), jugglers, strongmen and of course the clowns.

This gets a great response from the crowd, with cheering, applause and even some flowers being thrown!
Surprisingly there is a small commotion as Quentin and Johannes pass by one corner of the crowd, but it is swiftly calmed by nearby Gladiators.
Sir Cuthbert thanks the party as the parade leaves the Arena and then ushers the party back in order to perform as individual acts.

Jornilsson strides off to see what the minor crowd disturbance was about.

Sir Cuthbert expertly whips the audience into a state of excitement, then introduces each act:

  • Quentin attempts to Display Weapon Prowess with his Two-handed Sword…he fails!

The crowd gasp in horror as the Sword slips from his grasp and gives him a minor wound.
Immediately Eric and Dale rush in and attempt First Aid. Both succeed and Quentin is fully healed.

Meanwhile a couple of clowns distract the crowd by appearing at opposite ends of the Arena, throwing eggs to each other and trying to catch them whole. Neither succeed and both are spattered with egg yolk and eggshell.

Sir Cuthbert guides Quentin out of the Arena whilst getting a decent round of applause for the Ranger by saying “Quentin was attempting a dangerous feat - remember not to try this at home!”

Dale will also investigate the small commotion. Someone might need healing there, too.
