Glurgiest songs

An oddity from “Mad Men” days, Mr. Jack Jones, singing the cautionary tale of Wives and Lovers.http://oldielyrics.com/lyrics/jack_jones/wives_and_lovers.html

If you’re going to hell, I’m there with you. We used to have to sing this in elementary school. I almost dislocated an eye from rolling so hard.

Maybe you could have suggested you all sing “Iron Man” instead. It’s got a tin soldier in it, right?

Well, I came IN to mention it; does that count?

Too busy playing cards in church were you?

Since no one else mentioned this one, enjoy! Quite a video with the song, too!

Cher- You Better Sit Down, Kids

“Tie a Yellow Ribbon”

What do I win?

Why do we automatically think of the 1970s when it comes to sonic glurge? Here’s an excerpt from a post I made a few years back.

As others here have mentioned, contemporary popular country music has a level of glurge the weepy adult contemporary tunes of the 1970s can’t even approach.

I’ve Never Been To Me, all about whorin’ in the Greece isles and makin it with the preacher man.

Seasons in the Sun by Jacques Brel in French with English version by Rod McKuen.
This was covered by Terry Jacks in 1974.

The French version is Le Moribund and is most certainly not glurge. It’s acerbic and cruel. Rod McKuen needs a slap for what he did with it.

Pretty much all country music.

Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass

I actually liked this song when it first came out, but it got so much radio play that I grew to loathe it.

I checked the song on wikipedia and it mentioned the Barry Manilow song Mandy was originally name Brandy, but he changed it to Mandy to minimize the confusion.

Come to think of it, Mandy should be on the list also.

Yeah, that’s pretty glurgey, but how about the other “Patches”, by Dickey Lee? A classic example of the “teenage death” song, an entire genre which I guess pretty much qualifies for this thread. This would also include “Teen Angel”, probably the glurgiest of the bunch. (She got OUT of the burning building and RAN BACK INSIDE to get his HIGH SCHOOL RING!!!???)

Honorary mention to

Daddy , Dont you walk so fast,

C.W. McCall’s song Roses for Mama, from 1977, is just about the glurgiest song I ever heard.

“My Way”

I thought it was a railroad track.

Mind you, I’ve only read about it (in Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs).

How can we forget Christmas Dinner by Peter Paul & Mary, lyrics here. I have to say I loved this song when I was 13.

Memory from CATS, but mostly because people insist on singing it like a funeral dirge.

It’s supposed to be a reflective song.
