When I was in college, I had to take a lot of classes from professors I didn’t like or agree with. Attending a Ward Connely lecture is not the same as endorsing his comments. Although I’m sure more than a few students do agree with him: there’s no idea so stupid and ignorant that you can’t get some college students to rally 'round it. By contrast, Coulter has written several best selling books, and tours nationally to enormous crowds who certainly aren’t just listening to her to pick up a few college credits.
I do agree, however, that in content, Connely and Coulter are of a kind. In terms of popularity and social impact, there’s simply no comparison. Coulter is a major celebrity. Connely is a far-left kook most people have never even heard of. The same goes for:

Mobiot’s British, a fine thing to be of course, but he isn’t relevant to American politics. I’d never heard of him until I pulled up his Wikipedia article now. Has he called for the death of Tories? I don’t think Chomsky has ever called for the death of American conservatives. Yet Ann Coulter has wished someone would blow up the NY Times, and hoped “American Taliban” John Lindh would be executed “As an example to liberals.” Again, I don’t know Monbiot but Chomsky forms arguments and uses logic. I don’t agree with him at all, I think his premises are flawed by a conspiracy-theory view of the world, but he is nowhere near the piece of work that Coulter is. He isn’t a troll, for one thing.
The closest person on the left to Coulter is Ward “little Eichmanns” Churchill, as other posters have already mentioned. But Churchill is an obscure academic whom no one would have heard of had the right not settled on him has their outrage of the day. Coulter’s books are national bestsellers. Churchill’s fifteen minutes are up, Coulter has been a regular guest on awful cable news shows for years. Her influence dwarfs Churchill’s by several orders of magnitude.

In general I think that Chomsky’s political theories are absurd, but there’s no honest comparison to be drawn between him and Coulter. Has he ever, for instance, suggested that his political opponents are traitors? That they should be killed if they step out of line? That they’re godless? Has he suggested invading countries and converting them to Christianity? I’ve never heard of Mobiot.

Besides, Galloway is British. I thought we’re making comparisons to American political wonks who have an affect on Americans. Is Coulter a celebrity outside the US? Not that I’m aware of. If we take this comparision internationally, then it should be easy to find more than a few “Ann Coutlers of the left” out there as there are still a few backwaters of Marxism left in this world.

If Ann Coulter is a comic, then I’m Boris Badenov. There is no way her rank viciousness can be considered humor outside of the Funny Farm. She is a combination of Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic and Narcissistic personality disorders. She is a Political Sociopath (a term I dearly hope I just coined!). Hell, she’s just plain Fucking Goofy (and any other cartoon dogs who will do her).
Nor is she terribly bright (or attentive); the other day on Faux she repeatedly refered to Zarqawi as Zaqari.
Ted Rall may be on the inflammatory side, but unlike most people, I’ve read most of his material, and his level of insight is remarkable. (For one, he’s actually been to Afghanistan and knows how things really are coming along over there.) His objection to the Terror Widows, BTW, was a select few widows becoming millionaires and being able to push political views due to a complicit charity organization. It’s the equivalent of, say, Michelle Wie getting a sponsors exemption into a PGA tournament while plenty of qualified men get left in the cold: preferential treatment. And he’s not even upset about the widows per se so much as the system that allowed them to become millionaires in the first place. It’s all on his website. Go ahead, check it out.
For the life of me, I cannot understad all this hatred of Michael Moore. I’ve been hearing about his “lies” for ages, and thus far I’ve seen absolutely nothing besides some numbers chickenshit and nebulous speculation. He actually made a point-by-point defense of the facts in Farenheit 9/11. (ompare this to Rush Limbaugh, who’s had his claims pounded into the dirt so many times, you wonder why he even bothers with a fact checker.) Maybe his unbridled support of Cindy Sheehan is misguided (even Ted Rall thinks so), but he’s a man of action, what did you expect?
Speaking of Limburger…it looks to me that he’s just tired. He came along at just the right time (Bill Clinton president, Neocons not all that powerful, no looming serious crises) and made a career out of the gullibility of Dumb America. Now that he’s made his mark, he has more money than God, he’s getting old and his health isn’t so good, and the Neocon ideology right now is about as popular as New Coke, one really has to wonder why the hell he’s still doing this. My guess is that he’s keepin’ on out of habit and loyalty to his, uh, fanbase, but his heart isn’t in it anymore, and he’s just hanging on until he can find a polite way to tell the world to fuck off.
Coulter is just…out there. I can’t believe anyone takes this lunatic seriously. To peg her as a conservative would be an insult to real conservatives worldwide. She doesn’t actually believe in anything, she just jumps on the flavor of the moment. Yes, it was Rall who covered the Terror Widows four years ago (and much better). That said, I don’t see much point in pitting her. When even Esquire magazine can’t stand her, there’s not much that needs to be said. I can guarantee you that her book will be lucky to sell in double digits over here. (Hey, Haunani-Kay Trask fizzled out in about two weeks. You think a Grade-S nutsoid like Coulter has a chance?)
My opinion is that she is the literary (loose use of the term) equivalent of an
Internet Troll; I strongly suspect the same motivating factors are at work in both
cases. And her modus operandi works for the exactly the same reason a good
troll’s posts work.
Like Hillary Clinton, Michael Moore is a convenient bogeyman for the right, and gets falsely demonized accordingly. I always find it amusing when Moore’s critics paint him as unsupportive of US troops (even when he argues that their selfless sacrifice to the nation should not be squandered on unnecessary wars), while giving a pass to morons like Bill O’Reilly (who accuse WWII US vets of committing war crimes).
And I’m currently of the opinions that the only reason Ann Coulter is still in the spotlight is that she puts an acceptable face on bigotry and hetred. “Hey, I’ve got these boneheaded neanderthal views, but a hot blonde like Ann Coulter likes them, so that makes it all right!”
