Gobble, eh? A Metric Thanksgiving MMP

Mornin’ everyone.

It’s 50F, dark, and cloudy. Today’s forecast calls for morning fog, afternoon sun, and a daytime high of 71F.

I rotate two sets of sheets, and I don’t rotate my dinnerware or glasses. I received new stoneware as a gift last Christmas. I had Christmas china for many years, but I got rid of it during the Great Purge. I have a set of china somewhere that was given to my mother, and I will eventually get rid of it if my sister doesn’t want it. If I remember correctly, she wanted my mother’s fancy china that was never used. I don’t live that way, and I am perfectly happy with my stoneware. It’s nice and simple, a matte, flecked kind of white color.

Shoe, I’m glad your mother is home and recovering, and I hope it’s going well.

Bright Tree, I hope your leg is feeling much better today.

JtC, yay for getting all the permits!

The pups are due for their Bordetella shots next month, so I’ll need to set up an appointment.

A German/Polish restaurant that’s been around for years and was even featured on Diners and Drive-Ins is finally shutting down. The owners, one of whom was the cook, are retiring, and I can’t blame them. To be honest, I thought the food quality had declined in recent years, but I know my mother liked going there. My sister and brother-in-law often took her there on outings. At any rate, I’ve found another German restaurant with a more Bavarian slant north of me, so my husband and I will check it out soon.

There isn’t much going on around here; the usual errands and puttering around the house and garden. I have one dahlia that is still producing massive flowers (dinner plate-sized). So, I continued to water all the posies because a lot of them are still blooming. The day before yesterday, the birds were going wild in my yard. I had flocks of them; a family of Northern Flickers (I usually only see pairs), flocks of Robins, Townsend’s warblers, all the usual Black-Capped and
Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Juncoes, Stellar Jays, Red-Breasted Sapsuckers (which I rarely see in my yard), Nuthatches, Fox Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Red-Winged Blackbirds; just flocks of all these birds, all at once. If Maisie noticed them and barked, they’d lift off, and it was like 50 birds taking off all at once. It was nuts and really cool to see. I love the Townsend’s warblers; they’re so colorful.

I’m not sure what I’m doing today. Maybe bike riding, maybe just some errands. I’m not really in the mood to spend any money, and when I get like this, I know it’s best to listen to that mood.

Alrighty, I need some more coffee. Please take care of yourselves.

I have my high school ring in my jewelry box. No way I can wear it any longer, not that I care that much about my high school. The band is slightly flattened from carrying heavy luggage. I never got a college ring - all I wanted out of Purdue was ME, with a degree, of course.

I gathered all the household trash - there was lots more than I expected. I’ll load it into my car shortly and I think I’ll take it right away. FCD is here and he can deal with the HVAC tech if he shows up while I’m gone. So time to get trashy.

I didn’t want a high school ring. My high school was good, but I longed to escape to college.

I bought my college ring years later, when I could afford it. I chose a pretty dainty one and wear it occasionally.

Good morning. Mrs Magill and I voted yesterday. We then did our weekly provision gathering, grabbed a quick dinner and come home to Spike, who’d just gotten home for fall break.

I forgot to move the recycling to the curb last night, but the recycling dude waited patiently for me to bring it around.

Thank you for the reminder. I’ve just added it to the family calendar.

Mrs Magill has a full sized cedar chest. I have no idea what’s in there. I think it’s been opened once since we’ve been married. Either it’s full of the heads of her past lovers, and she’s been playing the long game; or it’s full of old sweaters. It could go either way.

I learnt SNAFU from the Intellivision game. It was a legally distinct Snake game. Mattel claimed SNAFU Situation Normal, All Fouled Up. Even at the age of ten, I wasn’t too sure about that “F”. I learnt FUBAR a little later. I still tend to use it sometimes.

Publix had rump roasts on BOGO yesterday. We came home with two four pound roasts that have been vacuum sealed and put in the Deep Freeze for later consumption.

I still have my high school ring and my college ring. My father is in Rotary with the admissions dean at NC State. He let us leave our rings in the NC State Bell Tower overnight a couple of years ago. Now, I have an extra special class ring that won’t fit over my knuckle anymore.

Have a good day, everyone!

I found mine several years ago, and hung it on a hook where we hang keys. The band is slightly flattened, and it’s tarnished. I wasn’t a fan of gold, so I got the high-mount ‘argentus silver’. I wish I’d opted for the low-mount gold, but there you are. I have no desire to wear it, but I wouldn’t like to get rid of it.

Our school team was (is?) the Rebels. My ring has a confederate soldier’s bust on a crest, flanked by U.S. and Confederate flags. A charging Confederate cavalryman is on the other side. The following year, the soldier was changed to a cartoon version. Really sad that our mascot was a Loser.

I worked with a guy who was embarrassed that he got his engineering degree from West Virginia. So he would wear his father’s University of Florida ring. I dunno - seems to me unless you went to Doug’s University of Engineering and Bowling, where’s the embarrassment? Then again, Larry was a pretender in a number of ways.

I decided to take a chance and go to the convenience center, so that chore’s out of the way. Two full bags of garbage, a bucket of cat crap, 3 bags of recycling, and a box full of cardboard, all out of the garage. Yay! Then I did some roll-suckage. Now I wait for a call from the HVAC tech.

I’ll head to my studio after lunch and ready things for the grands this weekend. I think I know what I’ll teach them. I may even do some stuff myself this afternoon. We shall see.

I lost my class ring a couple of years after I graduated.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. After, I shall shevel and go to the grocery store. I have a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for fried chicken, so I may hit the drive thru at Hartz this evening.

Y’all have a great day!

Assorted school rings are one of those mysterious 'Murrican school rituals to me, like the mysterious rite known as ‘homecoming’[1] and the graduation rank system. Not that I would expect any of you but BooFae to know what graduating from university with a Desmond means…

Not a very inviting day outside, a bit wet and very overcast- the forecast said it would be nice, it lied- so I have barely set foot out so far. Did the laundry anyway, and I’m heading out later to meet some people at the pub, for the first time in far too long.

  1. yes I could look it up, no I’m not going to ↩︎

Have managed nearly perfect slothage for the past several hours, only spoiled by my going out and returned the empty garbage bin to the garage and putting the neighbor’s bin back by their house (they do the same for me on other weeks). So need to get get up and accomplish something…probably fix myself a cheeseburger…

Taters, hope the new restaurant doesn’t disappoint. Happy puttering around.

And onward.

Good morning! I’ve been up since around 5:30, but busy with paying work. It’s currently around 50Ferrets and expected to climb to around 80F as the day goes on. Things cool off quite a lot as the week goes on.

Knots, nicely done with the fridge filters! I usually reset mine once in between changings as it’s just me, and the filters aren’t that heavily used. Seems to work ok, but my fridge is a nag. Seems like it’s always after me to do something for it.

I fret over what to do with my “good china” – yet another thing that was mercilessly imprinted on my young mind that I “must have” to be a Proper Married Lady™ (ugh!), and while I still love the patterns I chose, it almost never gets used and takes up a bunch of space. The money that was spent on building that set over the years is breathtaking and can never be recouped. Some days I dream of having one last 7-course meal extravaganza that ends with all my friends throwing their plates and glassware into a roaring bonfire.

FCM, I have the hope chest, too, though mine was purchased by my parents. I don’t even know what all is in there now. More stuff to soon get rid of, I suppose. Mostly keepsakes that mean nothing to anyone but me.

doggio, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you sound so discouraged. I am sorry yesterday was such a bad day. I hope today can go at least a little better. As for heckling you for spelling and grammar mistakes, no. Just no. I hope the PC shows up today and you can avoid phone-typing. As you would say: {{{{doggio}}}}

red, good luck with the pic line being removed soon! I so hope this is the end of this ordeal for you. You’ve been such a trooper!

I agree! Thank you. Today things continue to improve.

My china is Noritake. I also have a full old set of their day-to-day stoneware. That stuff will survive a nuclear holocaust, it is so durable. I use it now for picnics. What a lovely gift from your lovely wife, by the way!

JtC, yayyy on the completed permits! Go, you! I am going to try to attend a No Kings rally on Saturday. The Ewe-Jean ones have the highest energy, but with the leg issues, I will try for a smaller one closer to home. Those have also been well attended when I’ve gone. Hope you finished the stitching last night you were in the middle of.

LOL, good job on the acronyms, metal mouse! I also particularly liked BOHICA, which I had not heard before. And… chocolate Cheerios? I’ve never seen those. I don’t think I’ll miss them, though.

shoe, you’ve been busy! Your home environment sounds much improved. Good job!

Sorry your sleep was so discomfited, Cat Glove. Maybe a nap later on today?

I wish I could put you up against my birth mother’s mother. She could out-cuss anyone I ever met. Left me speechless the first time I ever heard her let fly. My goodness!

BooFae, enjoy Kris Barras! I get what you mean.

swampy, boring but tasty is a win, in my book. Happy mowage!

Taters, your dahlias sound jaw-dropping, and I love that you had the bird congregation in your yard! Enjoy your day, whatever you decide to do with it.

Yayy for voting, Mollie. I’m keeping an eye on my mailbox to see if my ballot shows up today or tomorrow. It will be a quick turnaround to a drop box as soon as it shows up. If it shows up. If not, I’ll be in line at my elections office on Tuesday.

Mine, too, exactly the same! I hated it. Our school newspaper was called the Rebel Record. When I became editor, I tried hard to change it to the Oatmeal Press, which I considered the height of wit in those years. No one went for it, though. All these years later, they’re still the Rebels. How cringe.

Enjoy your pub time, Nut! And if you ever care to explain what graduating with a Desmond means, I’d love to learn about it.

Almost time to rouse Ollie and get ready for the day. I’m headed to town to meet a friend for lunch and run a few errands while I’m there. Will return home reprovisioned and set for another couple of weeks.

A quick MMP story:

About 2 months ago, I kept smelling a distinctive garlic odor every time I opened the kitchen door. I always have fresh garlic around, but it doesn’t usually smell unless I’m actually chopping it up. I keep the garlic in a hanging basket, so it was easy to source the stink. I casually grabbed the bag of 2 heads and moved them into the fridge.

Whereupon they began to stink up the fridge. I finally inspected them more closely and discovered that both heads had gone bad! I can’t recall this ever happening before. Fresh garlic keeps a long time. These heads were only a couple weeks old.

So I put them into a plastic container I was throwing away and put it into the trash. Whereupon they began to stink up the area where I store trash until I’m ready to transport it to the tip.

So I located the plastic container with the stinky garlic heads in it and moved it to the trash freezer. They can stink up that freezer in the workshop all they like. Good grief, I’m sick of those two rotten garlic heads!

Hope everyone has a delightful day!
