God, I love Detective Conan, aka Case Closed...

I’ve been a mystery buff for years, yet it took Adult Swim to introduce this anime to me. Hell, I already loved Scooby Doo for the cases, and this is a million times better! I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea (God only knows how much it’s derided by some of the less literate bunch on the Adult Swim message board, though, to be fair, it’s not liked by more literate folks too), but I personally hope it’s gained enough of an audience to keep on going. The initial ratings, from what I’ve been able to discover, look promising; I can only hope they catch up to the 12+ seasons they’ve had in Japan!

“Jack Attacks!”, last night’s ep, for example, had me completely fooled along with Richard and Conan. Like them, I was so sure the puzzle was THAT easy… Only it wasn’t! I haven’t felt that bamboozled since Ellery Queen.

Man, I haven’t felt like such a fanboy for any pop culture bit since the X-Men movies… Tell me I’m not the only one watching!

I thought it was OK and watched them all until a few days ago. The reason I stopped is that I find mysteries fatiguing when they come right on top of each other. It’d be better if they put it on once a week maybe at the end of Toonami. When you’ve got time between cases then it gives you a chance to mentally give the characters some breathing room. Otherwise it begins to feel like everywhere they go something bad happens. Everyone they know will eventually be involved somehow. It’s depressing.

The time is awful too. It’s 10pm here in Hawaii but it must be in the middle of the night where everyone else is. You’d think they’d be nicer to premieres.

I wonder why they had to make him shrink? It seems like it would quickly become a burden to the writers. If I was Jimmy, I would have told Rachel. I mean why not? It just seems like 8 year old wonder detective and his scientist super uncle would have been just as effective as a hook.

BTW, my favorite episode so far was the one with hide and go seek. The only thing it was missing was Rachel kicking butt.

I’ve heard this a lot, and I don’t quite understand it. No one seems to mind when Jessica Fletcher or the aforementioned Ellery Queen finds murder wherever they go (and in the former’s case, half the time involving one of her increasingly large extended family), nor when every client of Ben Matlock’s or Perry Mason’s are innocent, etc. etc.

Why is it such a big deal here?

Pretty much the one thing I like about this anime is that now I’m getting to sleep a lot earlier now. I guess I can’t identify with the Japanese national affection for precocious kid heroes.
12+ seasons? So does he end up aged 20 with a 32 year old girlfriend?

I agree with you, it wouldn’t be much of a mystery if nothing happened. Rather what I’m saying is that it’s not that there’s murder and crime wherever they go but that I see it every day. Give me a week between shows and I’ll be fine. I generally feel that way for anything but comedy. I really liked Braun’s “The Cat Who …” books but if I read one after another I’d get tired of them pretty quickly. But if I space myself I can stick with them indefinately.

Do you know what happened to the show? I started watching it on accident and loved the mysteries. Granted, some of them aren’t even mysteries, but they really do get some good ones in there. It used to be on at 12:30 AM here (NC), but now it’s gone. Bummer.

Here it’s on half an hour later. That’s the first place I’d look, especially if it’s Inuyasha that’s in the old time slot.

Me too. It’s addictive. Plus, they actually show blood, dead bodies—most, if not all of whom died with a " " expression—and partial nudity. But with a SURPRISINGLY low level of gritty angst. (Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter…in moderation.) It’s kinda like a PG-13 “Encyclopedia Brown.”

'Still trying to figure out all the high-tech gizmos that Conan somehow has, though.
