40 NH Christian center homes burn on Easter Sunday:

ALTON BAY, N.H. – A massive fire damaged or destroyed dozens of wood-frame buildings, mostly unoccupied summer homes, at a 146-year-old Christian center on Easter.

The fire erupted at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, when Christians were celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But the season hadn’t begun yet at the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center on Lake Winnipesaukee, and state Fire Marshal William Degnan said no injuries to residents had been reported.

“Fortunately, it was at this time of year,” he said. “During the summer, it’s full.”

There really is a Lake Winnipesaukee? I always thought What About Bob? just made up the name.

One of the largest, if not the largest, lake in the state. Beautiful in the summer and fall.

Very much the largest - about 6 times the size of the runner-up (Lake Umbagog). Beautiful pretty much year-round.

Perhaps god thought the christians and their camp were uglying up the scenery.

Actually, OUR church was levelled by a late-night fire about a decade ago. Our pastor and one of the prominent members of the parish council showed up almost immediately, and were beset by TV reporters who wanted to know if there was some deep meaning or message that could be drawn from.

The parish council member gave the best possible answer: “The message is that wood burns.”

I have my seasonal preferences… and forgive me, I grew up in the southeastern part of the state and didn’t study overall NH geography too closely!
