Let me ask you something, and surprisingly, it’s not a classic Dope hypothetical, but someone I knew well: Suppose a 50-year-old man, from a typical Northeastern small city, never lived anywhere else and for all practical purposes never traveled except while in the Army in WWII. His hometown has a few black families, mostly poor but treated with respect, as no different from anyone else. But all his life the culture he grew up in referred to blacks as “niggers”, used the term “nigger-rigging” for repairs improvised with material on hand, as a stereotypical poor black family might do through not being able to afford proper repair materials (yeah, that’s condescending – but take it as a “everybody knows that’s how it is” stereotype, not a purposefully sneering one) – all that sort of thing. To him black men are “niggers” but he is not using it as insulting. What’s your reaction to him? What do you think the average man in the street’s reaction to him would be? Would they hear his usage as automatically insulting, or investigate and find it’s not intended as offensive? Why do you think that, whatever your answer is?

In light of the attitudes expressed in this thread, I propose that from now on the term “gonzomaxxy” be used to refer to any word, or phrase which is used in a particular way by a poster despite the fact that no one else uses it that way, and who insists that his usage is correct in the face of overwhelming evidence that it is not.
