Good free webpage hosting?

I’ve got a page on Crosswinds, but Crosswinds is turning to…errr…fecal material. Their FTP server hasn’t worked in months, they put multiple pop-ups on my pages without warning, and now they’ve given me a happy little notice that they’ll share all my information with their “business parters”. Screw that. I’m packin’ my bags and leaving, asap. But where to go?

What I’m looking for in a perfect webspace provider:

[li]Free (must-have…or is it? How expensive is webspace?)[/li][li]No banner/pop-up ads (at least no pop-ups. I can live with banners if I have to)[/li][li]FTP uploads for files/pages. I hate uploading through web pages (again, I can live without this one if I have to.[/li][li]One that respects my privacy. (a must-have)[/li][li]Reliable (There was a period where Crosswinds was down more often than it was up) (a must-have)[/li]
Any suggestions?

Well, I’ve always used Tripod. They allow a good chunk of web space (50 MB), and I’ve always found it easy to upload material. You have a choice between banners and pop-ups (I’ve always chosen pop-ups, by the way). It’s occasionally slow, but in my estimation that’s been such a mild inconvenience that it’s barely noticable.

I’ve heard people mock Tripod, but I’ve compared it to sources like Geocities, Angelfire, Goto, and the like, and it’s always seemed better.

By the by, I think this may end up in IMHO…

Thanks for the info SPOOFE, I’ll give Tripod a look.

Regarding the which forum, I debated between the two, but decided that since I was asking “Which web hosts meet these specific criteria” it was a GQ as opposed to “Which one is the best”, which’d be IMHO.

Anyone else?

I don’t reccommend Tripod. A month or two ago, they did a massive-global-delete kind of thing on pretty much every page on their server that included the words “sex” or “pornography” … including a whole bunch of perfectly innocent pages that included a notice like “no porn here” or the like. They did end up apologizing and restoring most of the pages, but I can’t reccommend anyone with the potential to be that ham-fisted again.

topcities.com

I like it because of the short addresses, and the 150 megs of space (free)

It’s pretty simple, management-wise, as well.

I still use webjump.com easy setup, ftp, 25 megs. They even setup my very own name all by themselves.

I’m using http://www.20m.com (link in sig). I like it. Short name (whatever.20m.com), FTP and java uploading, no popups, templates available but not required (I used them as a starting point/inspiration to write my own html), unlimited free email addys for you and your friends.

Banners can be removed, more space added, and other stuff for a monthly fee ($5 and change to just remove the banners).

Minor omission in my previous post–you get 20 megs free (hence the name).

Let us know where you decide to go… you’re not the only one looking for a good webhost.

I forgot webjump uses banners.

Anyway, you can no longer expect free hosting to be profitable for the ISP so there are very few of them left. When they are off the net, so are you.

I’ll second the nomination for pair.com from the other thread. I’ve used them for more than a year, for three different websites, and never had a problem. And they’re fairly inexpensive.
