I’m glad it’s not just my old-fogeyness that made me think that the simple and elegant and utterly beautiful performance by Pink blew away the clunky “spectacles” (pun intended, at least for Elton John and Lady Gaga) that didn’t work either well either theatrically or musically.
Taylor Swift was horrible, as said. She sounded like a demo before they put the orchestration on it, but the good part never came. (Also, I hate, hate, hate, that this supermodel is the darling of teen girls for singing a song in which she’s the plain unwanted one.)
I never heard Zac Brown before tonight but that was some impressive acoustic guitar work. Which made me realize that the night held a total dearth of rock guitar. Yes, BonJovi performed, but that was a nonentity. (NonJovi?)
And why no English groups or singers? Just a couple of years ago, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Katy Perry, K T Tunstall were all hot young female singers. Now they’re all American. And the Brits have always had better rock bands and those have disappeared as well. Is this year just an anomaly? Are there Brit bands ready to take over?
Follow-up to the Pink performance- I went to the gym at lunch today. They have a room there with about 50 different cardio machines, and a big projection screen where they show concert films all day. They keep the room dark like a theatre, and I like to do my treadmill running in there while watching part of a concert.
Today, they were showing a Pink concert. There’s a number where she does almost the same thing she did at the Grammy’s last night- different song, but same idea- she’s hanging above the crowd from some sling-type of thing, spinning, and singing live the whole time. I guess it’s something she does on tour and she just decided to spice it up a bit with the outfit and the water and what-not.
She did it at the VMAs last year, too. Which is why I’m so surprised that everyone is all gaga (pun not intended) over her performance. Video here. Different song (probably the one on the Funhouse Tour DVD), slightly less naked.
