Grammies 2010 - Open spoilers abound!

Mouseover space -

Pink’s performance was astounding. Next stop - Cirq du Soleil. Not only can she dance and sing in five-inch heels, but she can also sing while spinning upside down in the air. (unless that part was lip-synched, in which case, I can forgive her).

Zac Brown Band wins new artist of the year - they do a version of “Devil Went Down to Georgia” that blows the roof off.

The Black-Eyed Peas stink the joint up. Their latest album is so weak - I’ve deleted songs from it off my iTunes already, and I don’t delete much.

I didn’t watch any of it, but I was interested in hearing about Imogen Heap’s “TwitDress.” Imogen’s very fan-friendly and for fun she decided to make a dress that would allow her to display fan photos from Twitter. She even made the Yahoo style blog. That’s one way to get people talking about you when they don’t know who you are. If anyone comes across any video of the dress in action, please let me know.

Imogen should have been nominated for multiple awards, but she was only nominated for two, and won one, for engineering, of all things! Yes, she engineered her own album and won a Grammy for it. Cool.

Edit to add more shallowness, I’ve never actually heard a note of music from her, but Taylor Swift’s dress in that blog is absolutely stunning.

Yes, Pinks performance was good. I also liked Beyonce’s. Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks. taylor sounded awful.

Those were the only performances I saw, sadly. So tell me who won what, besides the album of the year, which I know.

I really wanted GaGa to win album of he year. People may give her a lot of gaff but I don’t listen to much top 40 stuff and her album is in my library. Her opener with Sir Elton was great IMO. Their voices sound fantastic together and their theatrics are too!

Yeah, Beyoncé was good, too. I liked her crotch-grabbing - hee!

That blog says:

Lady Gaga, watch your back: You’ve got some crazy-clothing competition!
Which isn’t fair - if anything, Gaga is a follower of Imogene, who has been dressing in a unique fashion back when “Lady Gaga” was wearing normal evening dresses.

I suppose the patriotic crap performed by the Zac Brown Band would mean a lot more to US Americans. I really like these guys, though - they seem to be real musicians.

My God, has Taylor Swift always been this weak a singer? I have never liked Stevie Nicks’ voice, but at least she hits the notes she’s aiming for.

I had no Taylor Swift knowledge until one sleepless night when i watched a special about her tour and about her in general. She came across as a lovely young girl who understands that the life she suddenly has is an amazing privilege rather than a right. All the scenes of her singing though, sounded like an average high school aged singer. (a pretty pitchy HS singer) I guess it speaks well of her producers because if her albums sounded like that I don’t think they’d be as popular as they are.

Prior to tonight I had no Pink knowledge (other than a few “what were they thinking” red carpet galleries. I liked her performance. I didn’t really catch the lyrics. Does spinning in the air and then getting wet relate directly to that particular song?

I kinda liked the Les Paul tribute.

Well put. I don’t want to hate her, and I liked her on SNL, but that voice does not deserve such fame.

Elton John looked like a super-gay Geordi LaForge, and Lady Gaga, as my roommate put it) in her seat at the end looked like the Aggro-Crag. Best performance of the night though, and I’m a fan of P!nk.

How about those dancing clitoris costumes during Black Eyed Peas’ performance? I can’t imagine what else they were supposed to be!

Pink was fantastic. I loved Beyonce too, even though she screwed up the words to You Oughta Know. Could not get over the Elton John/Lady Gaga post-apocalyptic wtf going on with the make-up and wardrobe. Also loved the Broadway-upped Green Day.

That’s what I saw, along with Stephen Cobert’s opening. So, from my limited viewing, I say this year’s Grammys were very good.

I didn’t watch. I heard that dude with the song “Pants on the Ground” was going to be there. Was he?

Morning Edition on NPR just did a report on the Grammy winners and they played some Taylor Swift, who I had never heard before. Boy howdy am I unimpressed. She can carry a tune fine, but her voice sure is nothing to write home about.

They also played a snippet of her acceptance speech, though, and she sounds like a nice enough girl.

If there was an award for Song Most Likely To Get Stuck In Your Heard And Never Go Away, Single Ladies would win that too.

Pink made everyone else fade away, and not only because of the wow factor of the aerial performance, but because of the wow factor of theaerial performance and the way she sang that song! I’m always thrilled to be reminded of how exciting and delicious her voice is.

I don’t really understand the Beyonce worship. Yes, she’s extraordinarily hot, and she has a very fine voice. But… nuthin’. Too manufactured.

Pink impressed the hell out of me last night. I suspect it was lip synced but still, great performance.

I’ve heard a total of exactly one Taylor Swift song in my life (You Belong With Me), but my kids love it so I may have heard it approximately 73 billion times thus far in the last two months. But if that live performance is indicative of how she really sounds before post-production, holy crap, she’s bad. Maybe her strength is her songwriting and her singing just sort of goes along for the ride, but between that and Stevie Nicks bleating like a goat, I wanted to shoot my TV.

Stevie Nicks’ advice to Taylor Swift - “Stay pretty.” Yeah, she does seem like a genuinely nice girl, but her voice would hardly get her past the American Idol judges, much less build a singing career on.

I don’t think Beyoncé actually has that special a voice, but I was watching a bit of some special on her, and I think she works her ASS off, and has for decades now - I’ll give her full credit for that.

Times when it’s perfectly acceptable to lip-synch - when you’re dancing full-out, and when you’re spinning upside down in the air.

ETA: The Michael Jackson tribute was pretty good, too. I’m sure glad they didn’t let Taylor Swift sing with that bunch - it would have been embarrassing for everyone.

It wasn’t included on the televised part of the show, but the Derek Trucks Band won the award for best contemporary blues album. They’ve been my favorite band for years and the album (Already Free) really is that good, so I’m very happy for them.

Pink is all kinds of awesome! Otherwise, I only watched long enough to see how good Alice looked (pretty yum) and to see if anyone could out do her costume. She was almost starkers up there. But beside what was up with Taylor Swift, was it just me or did Elton sound awful too?
