“…” - Black Bolt
I can’t believe this thread has lasted almost a day without somone saying
BY THE HOARY HOSTS OF HOGGOTH!
(Although actually I tried to post it last night and the hamsters ate it.)
–Cliffy
P.S. Yes, “Imperius Rex!” is Namor. (Note spelling, unless you don’t care, and why would you?)
Alas, but yes. Up until the mid-1960s, “Sufferin’ Sappho” was one of the ‘Amazin’ Amazon’s’ trademark exclamations. I guess that in the 40s & 50s, not too many people were aware of the (ahem) sexual connotation that invoking Sappho suggested.
Thankfully, it was jettisoned - along with the invisible robot plane - when she got retconned by Perez in the mid-80s.
Here’s some more exclamations :
“By the Goddess!” or just “Goddess!” and "Lord of the Earth and Air!’ by everyone’s favorite street urchin/thief-turned-tribal goddess-turned-mutant superhero - Storm.
(Is it just coincidence that thinking of Wonder Woman and lesbianism led me to think about Storm? hmmmm)
Hey, I’m more of a Groo reader, y’know?
“Did I err?”
There was a funny Sufferin’ Sappho joke during Walt Simonson’s recent run.
By golly, you’re right. Dr. Strange has my favorite exclamations of all.
“By the twelve moons of Munnopor!”
“By the Vishanti!”
“Demons of Denak!”
“By the all-seeing eye of Agamotto!”
Ahh, Groo! I see we have something in common rjung!
The funnier exclamations, for me, came from Issue #50, turned more funny because a fan send a letter saying that barbarians had a code that comply them to say:
“What manner of wizardry is this?”
And:
“YO! Fiend!”
At least once in a sword and sorcery adventure, and the reader threatened to send the barbarian brute squad if they did not comply in a future issue. Evanier or Aragones replied they would never comply with a reader’s treats….
By then Groo had screamed those exclamations to the Amazons in the same issue!
Fuckin’ DIIEE!!! (Jesse Custer)
Whenever possible, I try to use the pharse, “As any fool can plainly see.” As soon as someone, anyone, replies with “I can plainly see that,” I shall marry that person on the spot.
Silence, mendicant.
Heehee, during the ‘Return of Superman’ story ark, in an issue of ‘Adventures of Superman’ where Superboy stops a missile from Engine City from destroying Metropolis, Perry White utters the phrase “Great Shades of Elvis!” That’s always stuck with me, as has “Saturn’s Rings!”
<<Hey, I’m more of a Groo reader, y’know?
“Did I err?”>>
My favorite was “You are too late to make a fool of Groo!”
