And for being the complete opposite of a dated song I nominate Chuck Berry’s other popular car song, “No Particular Place to Go”. Who the hell actually wore seat belts back then?
Hit the Road, Jack, Ray Charles
Mustang Sally, Wilson Pickett
Couple from the Doobies: “Rockin’ Down the Highway” and “China Grove”.
Or the cover by Buster Poindexter. Hell, get both!
For me, especially Roll Me Away.
Also Come Sail Away. Oh, and all of Bat Out of Hell.

And for the mellow moment The Grateful Dead’s Truckin’ because sometimes you just gotta change your ways.
I remember them more commonly called “safety belts” at the time, as Berry does in that song. My grandfather, who used to hang around a pro race car garage, installed belts in our family cars in the early 60’s. By the time I learned to drive in 1966 I was already a buckle-upper.
Here are a few songs I like to listen to while driving:
Sausalito Summernight by Diesel.
Slow Turning by John Hiatt.
Me and You and a Dog Named Boo by Lobo.
As for “Route 66,” I prefer the Rolling Stones’ recording.
There are several “inspired by Route 66” CDs with some great tunes on them. I just ordered More Songs of Route 66: Roadside Attractions for my upcoming trip to the Southwest.
If you’re a Car Talk fan, you might get a kick out of Born Not To Run, a collection of songs they used as bumper music.
Goin’ up Country by Canned Heat (caution, I get tickets listening to this song)
Jessica by the Allman Brothers
One Way Out - The Allman Brothers
Marie Marie - The Blasters
Mr. Soul - Neil Young
Pearly Queen - Traffic
I 'm not entirely sure why, but also …Heads Carolina, Tails California by Jodee Whatsherface
“Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues”-eels
“Stickshifts and Safetybelts”-Cake
“Race Car Ya-Yas”-Cake
“No Quarter”, Led Zeppelin
The Cars’ first album (you said it was a long trip)
A few from Drive-By Truckers:

“The Tough Sell”
“18 Wheels of Love” (Live version from Alabama Ass Whuppin’)
“Zip City”

It is–I’ll be driving from southern Alberta to Toronto. I’ll be using an all-Canadian route, so it will be about 2000 miles. It’s only me driving, so I’m not going to be pushing it. If I can do 500 to 600 miles a day, I’ll be happy.
These are great, folks–thanks for everything so far!
