No official reviews yet, but as per this io9 article, the word going around from advance screenings is that the “Wonder Woman” movie is actually pretty good – and even has a sense of humor!
I have to admit, I am looking forward to this. Maybe it’s just the gay comics fanboy in me, but I’ve been rooting for this film for a while now. I discovered superheros and comic books as a kid in the 70s, so the Lynda Carter TV series holds a special place in my geek heart.
I’ve also been sick to death of Batman movies for quite a while now, and was never a fan of the whole “grim & gritty” dark knight avenger type comic book. I want to see a superhero who really emobodies some real hopeful ideals and doesn’t just sullenly pout all the time.
One needn’t be gay to have been wishing for this movie. WW has been getting the dirty end of the stick from Hollywood for too long. Even now, she’s not getting anything like the promotion she deserves.
My wife is a HUGE fan, so I anticipate I’ll be seeing this movie at least once more than I’d have seen it on my own.
BTW: Lynda Carter and the TV series never did it for me - too much ‘stupid’ injected in the plot, and Lynda couldn’t run or ‘athelete’ to save her soul - so you see the stunt scenes, then you see Lynda mincing about - ugh. Also, the villians and props and plots mostly sucked - even when I was a kid I thought they were dumb.
The series was about on par for action/adventure TV shows of the mid-70’s. As an eight-year-old, I bought it. But I haven’t watched an entire episode in quite a few decades and am sure they wouldn’t hold up well. Nevertheless, I could watch youtube clips of Lynda Carter spinning around all day long.
For what it’s worth, Carter actually did most of the stunts on her show. It started when a stunt woman hired to fill in for her during an action shot didn’t show up for work. Carter, who was in costume for close-up shots simply volunteered to do it. Producers apparently were furious that their star did something where she could’ve been hurt (or even just bruised) and the whole series would have had to been shut down while she recuperated. But for whatever reason, they allowed her to do more stunts to the point that a regular fill-in stunt woman wasn’t even on the payroll. Carter was even given an ‘honorary stunt woman’ award from their union.
It’s hard to please some people. Would you have preferred that Hollywood go the mega-blockbuster route; cast Jennifer Lawrence (and work around her schedule), put the hype machine into high gear, have product tie-ins and happy meals, and the movie suck? Sounds to me like they took the time to do the character right.
I think I read somewhere that Carter hung from a helicopter at some point. That earns her some props.
Has anyone heard anything about age-appropriateness? I took my daughter to see The Force Awakens in the theater when she was six, and she’s eight now, so I’m thinking it’ll probably be fine for her; but I don’t want to go into the theater and get blindsided by like body-horror mutilation sequences or anything.
I have my doubts frankly. These are the guys who somehow messed up a movie called Batman v Superman. How will they do with the much more difficult property of Wonder Woman?
They will probably make a movie
Which is some sort of a stereotypical feminist claptrap
Or if they avoid that, make a film which shouts:“hey, lots of semi-naked ladies!!!” Which is IMO worse.
I seriously cannot wait. I was a huge fan of Wonder Woman as a kid and I used to watch the Lynda Carter series all the time. (I was probably about three or four when it was on) I’m going to go and see it with my mother and my sister (we all saw the trailer when we went to see “Beauty and the Beast”, and we were like, “we HAVE to see that!”)
I mentioned this in just about every Wonder Woman thread but anyone who has even a little interest in the new movie should check out the direct to DVD 2009 Animated WW movie (which is being re released I believe to tie into the new movie). It is well done.
my bolding in the quote…
Mostly? I remember an “alien” whose costume consisted of aluminum foil with Christmas tinsel wrapped around it. And a motorcycle helmet underneath the foil. I loved the Lynda Carter role, but I think a minimum wage employee could have put together better costumes than that. Except for WW herself. Hey, did anyone else notice that her boots had high heels when she jumped, then became flat heeled in the middle of the jump, then high heeled again after she landed?
If they’ve got the tech/magic to switch from civvies to costume by spinning around, they’ve got the tech/magic to make the heels do whatever they want.
Here’s my question: The Amazons lived in “peace and harmony” for over a thousand years on Paradise Island on the TV show. So where did the guns they used for “bullets and bracelets” come from? They wouldn’t have invented them independently, would they? Did they wash up on shore? Were they in another airplane? A ship? They’ve clearly had them for a while.
I’m one of the people who thought her scenes, especially the fight with Doomsday, in BvS were great. I’ve been cautiously optimistic since the first trailer and am thrilled to hear it is getting raves.
I’ve already got a ticket for opening weekend. I would go opening night but I’m getting to old for that s#it.
In the original 1940s series run, the Amazons had a magical ‘scrying’ pool where they could observe (and hence keep up with technological inventions in) “man’s world.”
In the George Perez reboot, pilot Diana Trevor (mother of Steve Trevor) had her plane shot down and she parachuted to Paradise Island, living with them while the rest of the world believed she’d died at sea. Diana brought some handguns and an American flag (hence, WW’s red, white, and blue costume) and she inspired Hyppolyta to name her daughter after her. (In the reboot, the Amazons called all the ancient gods and goddesses by their Hellenistic names.)
As far as ‘mistakes’ in the TV series, check out this spin clip from the first season. She forgets her bracelets in two different spin moments!
BvS pretty much finished me for DC movies in the theater. Buzz is good for WW, but people were hyped for Suicide Squad (which I streamed, thankfully) and that still has some defenders. To get me in theaters next month, Wonder Woman will need great word-of-mouth - **Winter Soldier **levels. (To me, they seem to be following Cap’s formula for her as far as action.)
We know what Cap was doing after WW2, what does canon say Wonder Woman has been doing all these years?
