Since nobody else has volunteered for the MMP, I’ll get us all started with our great British preoccupation with the weather! Things have obviously been changing over the last few years, I remember when we used to have definite seasons but now they just seem to blend into each other with almost no discernable boundaries.
We haven’t had a truly hot summer as such for a long time, this year was no different and we ended up with a couple of weeks of hot weather with the rest of the time being warm, dull or wet.
Today I was hoping for a nice sunny day with decent temperatures and what am I promised? Rain. For the rest of the week. More rain. Just what I need.
My fondest memories are of the long lazy days of summer when I was a kid when we spent all day outside playing and exploing on our bikes, a large group of the kids that lived on my street, when our parents weren’t worried about strangers behind every bush and all that stuff. We went out after breakfast and came back in the evening for dinner, and all day our parents would be quite sure we were safe and just out enjoying ourselves. Those were the days!
Didn’t you have a surprisingly sunny summer a couple of years ago? Ehm, 2007 I think, it was the year I was in Switzerland, I spent a week over in England with some friends and the Brits remarked on how it was sunnier (and, I think, drier) than usual.
Here, temperatures have gone down, which means that on Saturday I didn’t lock down the house and switch the A/C on until 4pm. Those of us who haven’t spent vacations at the beach and those who are back from them are still following a policy of “hide from the big shiny ball in the sky”. Oh, and last week I discovered why this building is so glassy: the architect is British :smack: Apparently the notion of “the Andalusian sun” had not been explained in enough detail. The building is brand new and they’re putting up thick roll-down blinds all over three sides of it now, hallellujah (the Northern side is not getting blinds).
This has been a weather year of extremes. We started with the copious snowfall, and we’re just finishing up with the horror of heat and humidity. I’ve had the house open for the last 2 days, and it’s been glorious! The 10-day forecast shows 2 hot days this week followed by more open-window days. That doth please me mightily!!
I spent my childhood about 90 miles north of where I live now, maybe a bit less. We never had air conditioning - not at home and not at school. When it got hot at night, we’d close all the downstairs windows and bring the bedroom windows down to a 4" or 5" opening, then we’d turn on a window fan in the dining room blowing out. It would draw in outside air and circulate it throughout the house. If it was exceptionally hot, I’d go to bed with a wet washcloth and wipe my arms and face to help cool down.
To this day, my mom hates turning the a/c on. She’s living in a different house from where I grew up - she’s out in the country away from all the concrete and asphalt of my childhood suburbia. The only reason she got air installed was that my dad really suffered when it got hot. Since his death, I don’t think she’s turned it on a couple of dozen times. I can take a certain amount of heat - I’m often cold anyway, but the humidity demands a closed, air conditioned house.
But today will be another nice window-open day. I’ve got a list of chores, including laundry. I shall labor on Labor Day. At least I got to sleep in till past 6:30 - that’s unheard of in my life!
Great OP BooFae. It’s always fun to talk about the weather and we haven’t had a non-Amurrkin MMP in a long time! So YAY!
I am in south Jawja USA. It’s summer. Summer is hot and humid. Duh! It always is. Except this year the week of the Fourth of July, we had temps down into the 80s and low humidity. It was a nice seven days of moderate weather.
We also had a half an inch of  snow  this past February. It started snowin’ that particular mornin’ but didn’t start stickin’ until about mid afternoon. It hung around overnight and the next day when the sun came out it all went away. Still it  snowed  in south Jawja!
Great OP, BooFae. Seems like kids around the world grow up in similar ways, doesn’t it? I’m not too far from FCM, so my weather has been much the same this year. As a kid, I lived in Michigan from 3 to 11, then back to the east coast to Delaware. Michigan was never hot to me, but Delaware has always been hot and humid!!
At any rate, I’m up and caffeinated, even though it’s not a work day. I’ve been laying kinda low, so not really keeping up with things. Mea Culpa, and Rosie’s sig all around. Happy Monday all!
sneaks into thread The MMPs keep getting ahead of me!
Weather…well…summer is on it’s way out. It’s 29F right now (early morning); it’s going to warm up over the next few days but the general trend is down. Yay! Not that I mind summer but I’m ready for a change. It never did get anything close to actually hot this year, I think the warmest it got was 89F.
I’m hoping we get a good snow year. But not quite yet, obviously!
I know you can deal with heat better than I can FCM because you keep your house warmer than I would! To each their own.
I should do some laundry today. But it can wait until later. Coffee and various lazing around first. I bought a bed, which I got on Friday, and have been doing some serious furniture rearranging what with being able to use to futon as a couch instead of a bed. Yesterday I moved a bookcase, which involved emptying it and refilling it plus the moving it across the room part. I’m a bit stiff and sore.
Hey there, snowbunny! How ya been? How’s your maternal unit? She’s apparently dumped us.
I’ve now been up 4 hours. I’ve got a load of clothes in the washer. I really should do some work… Off to don some clothing and start something productive.
This winter is when we find out if my powers as Snowbringer still work. Last winter they worked too well.
It’s my favorite temperature time of year now. I can open the sliding door in my room (that looks out on the second floor balcony–the downstairs door has the glass firmly closed and locked at night) and leave the screen in place. Last night it got a bit chilly! It would be time to pull the comforter out of the closet and put it on the bed except I gave it to Computer Boy who is currently bedless. My heavy bathrobe does well as an extra blanket. And Culinary Boy is warm.
I grew up without air conditioning too, Mom. To this day I love the sound of a box fan in the window at night. I don’t like a/c because it’s too cold. It does suck the humidity out of the air well. That’s all I’ll give it.
I’m working. By choice though so the folks with families can have today off. I feeling nostalgic - thinking of when Labor Day meant the County Fair and school starting soon. The fair is gone here because of security concerns and budget cuts and school already started a week ago or more for the rugrats. Something in all that makes me sad.
There weren’t any fires too close to me, but we did get some smoke from a couple that were southwest of me. This is much better than in 2007 when a major fire came disturbingly close to taking out the town. I am not a fan of that sort of thing
And I don’t know why she doesn’t post around here anymore, FCM. I know she’s busy and aside from email isn’t online all that much these days.
My current work schedule has me off Sunday and Monday so I’m not working today. I think I’m going to go look for some new sheets. And the local schools still wait until after Labor Day to start, so they go back tomorrow.
I am of the opinion that the seasons have shifted a whole month from 40 years ago. I, like BooFae, was of the “stay out on the bicycles until dinnertime” school of thought. Summers started in June, sometimes May; Winter definitely in full force by Thanksgiving. Now, the worst of summer is concentrated in August (as example - Wednesday last saw a break in the temps, and once Earl was done playing off our shore, in the humidity as well) and winter will give us some token snow in December, sometimes, but the full brunt of it is in February. Could be a cyclical thing, but I’m still waiting for it to swing back the other way.
Da cave is spiffed. It needed a cleanin’ so I went at it this mornin’. OYKW is at his place doin’ laundry. We have discussed doin’ an early supper. It’ll either be go grab sump’n or eat leftovers at da cave. We shall see. It’s good either way.
I happen to lurve summer, bein’ as I am a summer baby. Of course, it does help havin’ a pool, but even as a kid and poolless (is too a word I just made it up!) as well as a/c less I lurved summer. Fall’s ok too. Winter I do not like cause it’s cold. Spring is ok except for the pecan and oak pollen. AAAACHOO!
Up and coffee has been got. I have stripped the bed and the sheets just got done in the washer I am waiting to do jeans til mr ems is back he went dove hunting very early this morning and isn’t back yet.
No clean up to do from last night as I did it all before I went to bed so today will involve organising the pantry I think. No idea what is for dinner. I do need to check if the package I DHL’s last week for my French Taxes made it!
Those of us US side - Happy Labor Day (That looks so wrong without the U)…boofae Happy Monday - I hope your August Bank Holiday last week was good
In the spirit of the OP…Over 100 degs again today but on Thursday this week around 78 degs…I am looking forward to that break in the weather. Central CA is hawt!
