Speaking of PBJ sandwiches, we had already noticed that the company which manages the cafeteria at work had a suspiciously American style of management (lots of rah-rah posters and stuff, if you know what I mean). There also seems to be a disconnect between what their cooks can cook (and even what ingredients they have available) and whomever prepares the menus. The “national” dishes aren’t exactly top quality (these people can overcook a glass of milk), but for the international ones, any similarity with the dish whose name these share is an unintended coincidence, for which the chef apologizes. They also do things like have an “ingredient of the week” which is not featured in their menu at all, or consider potatoes as a vegetable (I swear to Og, the US are the only country where potatoes and ketchup count as vegetables).
This month they have come up with these “cooking suggestions”, which are again unrelated to their menu. Chili con carne with chocolate… dude, you can’t even get chiles here. PBJs… most people’s reaction to the idea of PB is “EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!” and I’m leaving a few Ws out… We don’t know whether the owners of the catering company are American, but if the managers aren’t they sure fake it well!
People were being annoying at work. There was a husband and wife Diamond and Gold status member* who I swear were professional room-movers. They struck me as the type of people who are too cowardly to outright ask for an upgrade so they try to guilt trip management into giving them one. I passed them off to Squirrel AGM because I was in no mood to deal with entitlement on 3 hours of sleep. Then there was another Diamond-or-Gold who wanted a free bottle of water and did not like the fact that they only get that when they check in. If you would like to buy a bottle of water you can for $2 in the shop, or you can just meander over to the water fountain with a cup and get some for free! Hell, at least fountain water is honest about being from the tap, unlike bottled water.
I decided that they were doing a stand-up routine for my entertainment. Sometimes that’s the only way I can get through the day.
*God I hate Hilton HHonors. Yes, it is spelled with two h’s.
Spaz I have a Hilton HHonors card. I think. I’d have to go look in the wallet where all that stuff lives. However, to do so would mean I’d have to walk all the way over to the other side of the cave and that ain’t happenin’ so perhaps we may never know.
Popcorn and rum and coke go good together. Just sayin’.
Yes, but your mama raised you right so you don’t do things like throw key cards at people or “require” floors that don’t have the room type you reserved on the day that we’re 100% sold out with three weddings and a convention or throw a hissy fit because your room isn’t ready at 7:30 in the morning when checkout is at noon. All of these things have happened to me. Like I said, I just see it as free standup. Also both Squirrel and Detailed AGM have learned what my trigger points are and dart out to the desk seconds before I launch myself over it aimed at the jerk’s jugular.
I stay at my job for my co-workers. Flossie, the assistant executive housekeeper, gave me a bag full of the last of her garden tomatoes today. I gave them to Culinary Boy, but he’s passed out on the couch right now. He stayed out till All Hours last night after his long day at school. That’s why I got 3 hours of sleep last night–I was up worrying until he came home. Someone needs to get his phone turned back on.
ems, have you shared the healthy eggplant parmesan recipe? Could you? I could go for some eggplant in the near future.
Whew - what a day!! We just got back from trading the Crossfire for a Silverado pick-em-up truck. It’s too big for the garage - at least for the garage with FCD’s shop equipment in there. Until we build his workshop, I guess he’ll be parking outside. Daughter has offered to keep her car in his side of the garage.
Now I need to sell the van. Anyone want to buy a super-high mileage 1997 Aerostar? I’ll make you a deal!
We’re going to lose one of our new fishies - someone bit one of his dorsal fins off. I’m pretty sure I know which fish did it. I don’t expect him to be alive in the morning. Poor fishy.
Evening! I have clean teefs and I have been declared sane/fit by the PT. I have some balance exercises to work on as I currently have no balance but other than that I am good. Vertigo gone. For now.
Hubby came home early from work so he help me run a couple of errands. I am off to Shreveport next week and I needed some props for the team exercises I have to run as part of the 2 day interview process. Let me tell you when you buy rope and bandanas together you get some weird looks.
And now we are vegging. Supper will be left overs - left over steak, leftover turkey boob, left over butternut squish (roasted with cajun spice last night), salad and whatever else I pull out of the fridge.
I am going to get a pedicure tomorrow, wash the car, vacuum the car, generally clean the car, give the house a superficial dusting and vacuum, sort out flights to go home for Christmas then it is date night. Dinner and a movie. I chose the movie The American and mr ems chooses dinner.
Yeah…work is like that from time to time. Hopefully it won’t be a frequent occurrence for you.
I love rum and coke. But with popcorn? I’m not so sure.
Hope you sleep well on the plane, Taters.
Had a weird day, mostly not at work. Had to go in for a couple of things, but took an extra-long lunch and then left early. Managed to salvage my other 1/2 day from Tuesday. Spent most of the off time at church, radically pruning a tree. I’m pretty pleased with the results. Did about 1/2 the work during my extended lunch hour and the other half starting at about 4:30.
When I got home, I decided that I wanted chicken RIGHT THEN, so I went to the grocery and got a rotiss’d chicken and then came home and had it with 1/2 a baked potato, some applesauce and some peas. It was just what I needed.
I had chilli with chocolate in a pub in York. The chef said he’d made the chilli to his personal taste which was rather hot so he’d made a second batch with chocolate to take some of the heat out. You couldn’t taste the chocolate in it but it was delicious chilli all the same.
Happy Saturday, folks! I am up way before 'im indoors, that would be because he was a bit drunk when I collected him from the station after his trip back from Belgium, and he had a bottle of wine after I’d gone to bed. Can he haz hangover?
We have errands today and then we’re off out tonight for a birthday celebration for a couple of friends. Given that I’ve wasted an hour on here already, perhaps I ought to get on and make myself presentable.
Up and at ‘em. Am going to wander through several farmers’ markets this morning, just because. Then I have a bunch to do in the garden. It’s supposed to rain later today, so we’ll see how long that lasts.
We done been busy! We went to breakfast, then to the dump. Today is Hazardous Material Amnesty Day and we got rid of a buttload of stuff that had been left behind when we bought this house, including gasoline that was more than 10 years old. We kept missing the past amnesty days. Plus we had a load of other junk that had to go. So yay.
Then we stopped at Staples so daughter could get some stuff for her classroom. And now we’re home. I’m home. **FCD **went down to the boat to fix the bilge pump. Daughter is going mall-walking with a friend, then to a football game, then to a fire-pit at another friend’s place. I’m doing laundry. I also need to prime a couple of window frames - it’s only been since March… I’d also like to move a couple of azaleas - we’ll see if that happens.
I also placed a couple of ads for my van - we’ll see how that goes. I’m hoping to get $800 for it, but I’m willing to discuss the price. So we’ll see.
My accomplishments for the day include puttin’ a roast in the slow cooker for tomorrow’s lunch, makin’ a sallit for tonight and marinatin’ steaks for tonight. I also took out the trash.
Ya know, I’ve been up since a quarter of seven this mornin’. It is now ten of twelve.
I am going to kill my husband. 1.11AM this morning he wakes me up as we have ‘burglers’ and off he goes. Turns out it is the damn sprinklers (they are timed to go off at 4AM - I fixed the timer this morning) but I am wide awake he goes straight back to sleep and sleeps like a baby until his alarm goes off at 5.30. Me…I lay in bed and seethed for about 45 mins then I got up. Now I am ridiculously tired. I am going to kill him - the sprinklers have been going of at 1AM for a couple of weeks is my guess since we installed new light fixtures and turned off the electricity. Grrrrrrr.
I have no inclination to run my errands and do my chores. But I must or I will fall asleep and waste my Saturday. Did I mention I am going to kill him?
Had a lovely time touring farmers’ markets. There are three weekly markets that draw people from all over town, but I’d only ever been to the one that’s downtown.
So, I started downtown (because that opened earliest), then drove straight up High St. (which runs down the middle of Columbus) to the other two. The one in Worthington is amazing. Lots and lots of vendors, with a great variety. All kinds of meat, cheese and egg suppliers as well as veggies, soaps, baked goods, etc.
Am now home and have had lunch and am about to finish putting away what I brought home from the markets and then knit for a while.
