In this episode, we have Izzie getting demoted to 1st year intern (effectively), Meredith getting promoted to be Izzie’s boss, Yang getting promoted to Burke’s dispatcher and all-around right hand man, and the Chief of Surgery and the head neurosurgeon getting demoted to seamstresses.
Things I liked:
-George channelling Yang for Meredith and Meredith channelling Izzie for George in the elevator.
-Callie laying it all out on the line for George “Stop chasing me. Unless you want to catch me.”
Dr. Miranda Bailey having serious doubts about her judgement, and then figuring it all out in the last few seconds that Yang is responsible for all the evil that befell her. That payback is gonna be great!
Izzie, as damaged as she is, still can spot a damaged sister a mile away.
The woman with two uteruses (“Uterii?” “Uteruses.”) and two daddies for her babies. Why does Addison always get the infidelity cases?
But most of all, Yang says to Meredith what I’ve been screaming at my television for the last two years: “It’s not always about you, Meredith.”
I didn’t like Derek’s sister. Although I did like how everyone reacted to her.
His sister was Embeth Davidtz who played the skinny American Bridget Jones finds Hugh Grant cheating on her with, in a parallel scene of the door opening to reveal (in that case a naked) the other woman. Funny that she messed around with Dr. Sloane as well. And the preview has him hitting on Meredith; if that happens it will be too Melrose Place for me!
Very interesting that Alex ends up liking OBGYN better than plastics.
And it kind of bugged me that they were referring to the separate babies as twins. Even fraternal twins are presumably conceived at the same time? Although I guess that could happen with two uteri…would they really ovulate at the exact same time?
And it bugged me that Izzy didn’t like having to answer to Meredith; she’s lucky to be back at all.
Bailey vs. Yang–looking forward to that one. It seems inconsistent that Burke would be this dishonest; he seemed like an honorable guy.
Yes - wondered if art was imitating life or life imitating art. Previously fantastic Isaiha Washington (did you see him on Oprah!?) turns epitet slinger/previously fantastic Dr. Burke turns dishonest and compromising in his morals.
Not quite. Embeth Davidtz played Natasha, Mark Darcy’s legal partner to whom he gets engaged, much to Bridget’s chagrin.
I’m not sure why I even watch this show. I’m driven crazy every week by its sheer preposterousness, especially the whole Izzie-goes-psycho-yet-still-gets-to-return story line. That said, I’m really looking forward to the Bailey-Yang throwdown.
I missed a week, or should I say part of a week…saw bits and pieces of Izzie carrying the $8 million check around and spilling things on it, and then a scene of her saying she’s not going to cash it…what did she end up doing with the money? And how did she overcome her inability to enter the hospital building?
And as for this week…is the sister also an Ob-Gyn? She said something about having a patient at 35 weeks, and then they were on to something else. I loved the way Callie opened up to George and then smacked him right back down again…but I gotta tell you, I’m looking at George’s character a bit differently now, knowing what I know about the actor. I realize that is not a very enlightened, hip sort of attitude, but for some reason it does seem to matter to me. This is why I have problems watching Anne Heche in romantic roles, now, too. Oh, and I thought they missed the opportunity with the bar exam girl, to tell her that getting sent for a 72-hour psych eval. would be the perfect excuse to miss the bar exam this time around…and why did no one mention JFK Jr. to her?
Oh, I know…I just can’t get the whole Ellen period out of my brain whenever I see her. I had a hard time watching her on Everwood. I admit that it is an unenlightened viewpoint, and not at all in keeping with my personal world view. And I think it has more to do with the news exposure. There are plenty of gay actors playing straight roles whose performances don’t distract me, because 1)they are better actors and 2)their sexual preferences aren’t headline-making, so I’m not analyzing their acting ability. And maybe it’s just that I don’t like Anne Heche!
I like McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) a lot better when he’s not trying to make women swoon with his half-shut eyes and sultry voice. His interplay with his sister was redeeming.
I agree that it stretches the boundaries that Izzie was allowed back. But I do like the plot line where Dr. Bailey is feeling isolated because of it.
I wonder if there has ever been a case of a multiple pregnancy with two different due dates? I thought that an embryo releases hormones that prevent the ovaries from releasing another egg…
I have noticed that Burke, who was previously portrayed as being a close friend of Shephard’s and O’Malley’s, has not appeared in any scenes with either of them this season. Although it appears that might change next week.
And I’m hoping somebody with a medical background can supply some context for me. Exactly, how bad is what Burke and Yang are doing? Based on what we’ve seen, Yang’s participating in operations and changing personnel on Burke’s operations. I have to assume the former isn’t that far out of line or other members of the surgical team would’ve said something. And presumedly Burke has a say in who works on his operations and can delegate that to Yang.
The big problem with Yang and BUrke is that she’s covering for him in surgery. He’s still having problems controlling his right hand, and he and Yang worked it out that she’ll step in and perform the tough surgery steps he can’t when his hand starts to shake. Now, Yang is making sure that there isn’t anyone scheduled to do surgeries with him so that they can see what’s going on. Burke knows she’s doing this, and instead of coming clean, is allowing her to do it. This caused, at first, Dr. Bailey to think that Burke has lost confidence in her because of the whole Denny Duquette fiasco, when really he’s just hiding behind his girlfriend.
Also, Yang is assisting in all of his surgeries, keeping the other interns out. Plus she’s not getting rotated onto other surgeon’s cases. Not what the program is intended to do for these doctors. Alex and Meredith have noticed it (Alex said, “Maybe I should start sleeping with Burke.”)
If Burke would come clean, everyone would back him up - there would always be someone around in surgery to assist him when necessary until he’s 100%. But he’s not. And Bailey is about to figure it all out.
I doubt everyone would back him up. It’ would be like Dale Earnhardt, Jr. losing his right arm and asking some dude in the passenger seat to help him steer. No one would be willing to accept that as a feasible solution, especially the owner of the car and the insurance underwriters.
No patient wants a surgeon who lacks fine motor skills. It takes years to perfect some techniques. An intern is not an adequate substitute.
Besides, it’s completely fictitious that Yang would be available for every one of his surgeries anyway. Interns work 24 hours on, 48 hours off. I doubt a highly renowned surgeon would work anything but a cushy M-F schedule.
Of course, it’s inevitable that Burke will screw up sooner or later, probably during sweeps.
I understand the moral lapse - patients who think they’re being operated on by Preston Burke, reknowned cardiac surgeon, are actually getting Christine Yang, second year intern. But I’m wondering about the legal issues like malpractice and fraud. Other people are obviously aware that Yang is performing these procedures - they just misunderstand the motive, thinking she’s abusing her personal relationship to get more surgical time rather than covering for Burke’s incapacity.
It is a teaching hospital, so patients would be made aware that there would be students present. Hands-on practice is both essential and kosher, provided, of course, that an experienced doctor is present should the intern screw up. And therein lies the huge insurmountable gap with Burke/Yang’s situation.
It seems like everyone on this show either started out likeable and is becoming less so (Meredith, Christina, Burke) or started out relatively dislikeable and is becoming more likeable (McDreamy, Bailey, especially Alex).
This why Yang is on the verge of dropping from exhaustion. She’s doing her normal shifts, and then “moonlighting” helping Burke. Since Burke despiratly needs her help, why would he insist on banker’s hours? (Besides operating at oddball times probably makes it easier to keep unwanted personnell out of the OR no?)
