It all started a handful (or more?) years ago, on a nice spring day, in REI. They were having a clearance sale of winter gear. Snowshoes were on sale. I had never owned snowshoes, I had never really desired to own snowshoes, but at that price, well, I got 'em. They’re fun, but I don’t get lots of opportunity to use 'em around here.
Fast forward a couple of years, I find a snowshoe race. It’s lots of fun & I’ve done a couple of 'em now & even reported (at least) one in the MMP. Somebody ::Glances sideways across the state:: replies, "Hey, if you like that, you should try this. This being primative biathlon. Unlike the Olympic sport of cross-country skies & .22LR bolt-action rifles, primative biathlon is muzzleloaders & wooden snowshoes. Neither of which I own. While I’ve fired guns before, I’ve never handled black powder, different & more difficult than just inserting a bullet into a chamber. Yeah, not something you just go off & do on a whim.
Hmmmm. Looking around, I see there’s something called Summer Biathlon, running & shooting .22s. The good thing with this series in that you don’t need a gun, they have them there that you can use for the race. Between registration & the race beginning, there’s a mandatory first timers clinic (designed down to people who have never even held/fired a gun before), then some practice rounds to follow. This I can do relatively easily as I am a runner & I don’t need to own a gun - I’m there! Maybe I’ll try this as sort of a test run for doing a primative biathlon.
However, a knee injury keeps me out of the first two (of three) races this summer. Do I go to this last one, due north of PGH?
I’m on the mend, but not really back yet; maybe I should wait to race &/or just do a little 5k near home, but that means I miss the series for the year. Oh yeah, I’ve got another event to attend on Fri - a sesquicentennial for a somewhat nearby town that we’re scheduled to work at.
A few PMs, & a phone call or two:
::Phone rings::
OW: Hello
Me I know this is going to sound strange, but can you tell your husband Spiderman is on the phone.
OW: Hold on a sec. BTW, I’ve heard stranger. :eek:
Ruble & OW come up to watch / cheer me on!
I did pretty good too! It’s a time-trial start & I started diffle (DFL) but quickly & steadily picked people off & shot pretty well too, enough for a mid-pack finish!
We talk some after the race & agree to part ways for a little bit, Ruble goes & gets some bang-sticks & I go to lunch at the Blue Canoe in Titusville (Doggio, you should come next year as they were having some brewfest in the streets; sadly I didn’t partake. Between many hours of driving & shooting planned; drinking is not the best idea.) We meetup again at his gun club, where I get some instruction in & practice firing muzzleloaders. I think I may just be investing in the equipment to do said primative biathlons!
Thanks for coming out…& helping me find another avenue to spend money, Ruble :mad:

Pre-hijack question of the day, what Mumper/Doper have you had the most fun with or who do you want to meet & hang out with the most?
He so funny!
