I have a good sized collection of folding and fixed blade knives but don’t generally carry my favorites. My current everyday knife is an old Barlow two blade. Not sure how old but at least 1960s I would guess. It was a cheap knife when new but has carbon steel blades that take a wicked sharp edge.
I also like Old Timer and Uncle Henry knives if they are the older USA made ones.
Wait, I take that back. I did carry one for like a summer when I was about 12 because it was a gift. I don’t usually have any reason to have a knife with me.
I carry a Swiss Army Knife every day to work (I’m in IT…it sometimes comes in handy for opening cardboard boxes or loosening screws), and usually carry it around most of the time when we’re shopping, out to eat, etc. I have to consciously remember to leave it home when we go to a ball game, concert, or anywhere else it’s forbidden.
I’ve carried a pocket knife every day of my life since I was eleven and joined the Boy Scouts. For most of those 48 years it’s been the regular Swiss Army “Soldier” pocketknife. About six months ago I decided to try out the “new” SA Soldier knife (bigger, with the green handle, still pocket-size.)
I would be lost without my knife. It has one blade, a can opener, bottle opener, screwdriver, and awl, and a day seldom goes by without my reaching for it.
Yep: I’ve had this Kershaw for several years now. One finger spring opening, razor sharp, small blade. I use it for everything from opening boxes to cutting steak.
Swiss Army Knife on my keys, usually. It’s a 1993 Victorinox model with can opener, bottle opener/screwdriver, corkscrew, leather punch, and long and short blades.
I remove it whenever I have to catch a plane, and typically forget to put it back on for months, so I voted for “occasionally”.
I have, I think, four of them (2 black, 1 red, 1 blue), although I can probably only find 2 or 3. One is always in my pocket except when I have to go into a courthouse or fly, neither of which I do very often.
When I don’t carry that, I carry a Victorinox Champion (old-style – I bought it in 1982).
Occasionally I’ll carry a Victorinox SwissChamp, but it’s larger than the Champion and is a little too heavy for my pocket.
Another knife I commonly carry is a Case 31048 SS. Mine is older, and the shape of the top of the rear end is more rounded. It does not have the Case ‘logo’ stamp, but just ‘CASE’ in normal letters. Below that is ‘BRADFORD, PA’, and below that is ‘19 USA 93’.
I used to carry a Victorinox Spartan either in red or black depending on what I felt like, but the others are more handy at the moment.
“…small pocket knife?” No. I do routinely wear/carry a Leatherman or Gerber full-size multi-tool. I actually prefer Gerber, but get a free Leatherman from work whenever I want one, so…
I never leave the apartment without my Swiss Army knife (it looks like it’s the Wenger Evolution 18, except mine doesn’t have the handle shape shown there) on my keychain in my pocket, and a generic Leatherman-knockoff in a belt pouch. If I’m wearing a shirt with a pocket, then I also have a utility pen on me (it’s got two sizes of Xacto blades, small saw blades, a nail file, Phillips and flat jewelers’ screwdrivers, a nail remover, a pick, and tweezers). I don’t use them every day, but I do use them easily often enough to justify carrying them: I’ve gotten to the point where, if someone around the office or whatever asks “Does anyone have a…”, I can answer “Yes” before they finish the sentence.
Your question reminds me of this clip from Firefly, explaining why Zoey and Mal (both war veterans) always cut their fruit before eating it.
At the office I work at, I keep a plate and a kitchen knife for the few times I decide to eat apples at work. It’s just easier to eat it without making a mess if I cut the apple into slices first, especially if I want to put peanut butter on it. Granted, I do have to clean the knife and plate afterwards, but it saves me from having to fumble with a half-eaten apple when the phone rings.
And yes, almost always carry my Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. Not sure what the one I carry now is called, it’s just a basic knife: Two blades, bottle opener with screwdriver, can opener, corkscrew, couple of other things. I used to carry a SwissBit, which was a Swiss Army Knife with a thumbdrive as one of the gadgets (the thumbdrive could be removed in case you needed to take it through airport security). I stopped carrying the SwissBit when we were told that we we no longer allowed to carry USB drives designed to look like other objects (the illustration they used was actually the exact model of knife I had in my pocket. The whole thing was hilarious because our computers won’t even recognize USB drives anyways, regardless of what they are designed to look like.)
The only times I don’t carry my pocket knife on me is if I am in my Blues (the pants pretty much show the shapes of anything you are carrying, so I try to minimize what I put in the pockets), or if I am going out for a run.
Sometimes I need it for knife-type things like opening boxes or cutting things, I have also found the small blade makes a decent screwdriver for repairing glasses, though it scratches up the finish on the frames. The bottle opener tool makes me really popular when someone shows up with a case of beer only to realize it’s not screw-off. The can opener tool is probably one of the worst can openers I’ve ever tried to use (note to self: Buy another P-38). The corkscrew will one day be useful, I’m sure of it.
ETA: From Johnny L.A.'s links, I’d say I have the Victorinox Spartan.
I disagree. The can opener on any of my SAKs is one of the most-used gadgets.
One day I stopped carrying my Case knife, realising that I never seemed to have an opportunity to use it. That day I was riding my motorcycle at 80 mph on the 405 when it stopped running. No warning; just quit. I made it to the right shoulder and deduced that it thought the kickstand was down. I needed to strip the ends of a broken wire and twist them together. Fortunately I had (and still have) my P-38 on my key ring. It’s about as sharp as a particularly dull river stone, but I managed. The bike said, ‘Oh, the kick stand is retracted!’ and started right up. I also use the P-38 to open cans.
I’m female, so I didn’t vote, but I keep a Swiss Army knife in my purse. I rarely have occasion to use it, but it comes in handy often enough, and weighs little enough, that it’s worth it for me to carry it around.
Part of me wants to make a corny joke here about womens’ suffrage, but it wouldn’t be very funny despite the best of intentions. My wife keeps some kind of Gerber folding knife clipped to her belt when she’s at work. You know the sort, kinda bulky little knife, metal handle with the gungrip texturing, little bolt on the side of the blade to help you thumb it out. I think she uses it to open boxes, though the thing is sturdy feeling enough she could probably use it to hammer nails if she had it closed.
