Happy 136th Birthday Canada!!!

I like how Canada scheduled its birthday just days before ours. Conveeeeeenient! :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, lets see, it’s 9:14pm and I’m sitting in front of the computer browsing SDMB.

I guess that’s what I’m doing for Canada Day
Oh, and Gordon Downie is on MMM Intimate & Interactive. Tres cool.

My best friend in the whole wide world is Canadian. Happy Canada day, Canadian Dopers!

Happy Birthday, Canada

You know, I can’t find the lyrics to that anywhere on the internet.

So instead, here’s my Canada Day song:

The Canadian Railway Trilogy, by Gordon Lightfoot.

“There was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run,
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun.
Long before the white man, and long before the wheel,
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real…”

Vive le Canada!

Land of the Habitants, the Acadians, the Inuit, the Loyalists, the riders of the Underground Railroad, the Metis, the Miqmaq, the Ukrainian farmers, the manifold immigrants from every continent. Land of Champlain, Mackenzie, Commanda, and many more. Land lakes, rivers, plains, mountains, galciers, permafrost, islands, oceans. Land where the Nunavut government works in Inuktitut, people all over speak French, and the old ladies down the street gossip in Polish.

Let’s take today to reflect on how fortunate we are to have this land, these people, this society. Let’s take the next 365 (it’s a leap year) to keep making it better. Speak your mother tongue. Work in your community. Follow the news. Help your neighbors. Care for the young the old, the unfortunate. Share the culture and traditions of your region, your country, and in those of others. Welcome visitors and immigrants. Say hello to someone.

The Inuit villagers banding together to share food and shelter, the French colonists in the Order of Good Cheer, the Fathers of Confederation at Charlottetown, the builders of the CPR all knew what we must still remember: our strength, our vitality, our health, our quality of life, and our future come from co-operation and interdependence. Not from uniformity and ease of alignment, but from the synergy of diffenences, the wisdom gained from overcoming those differences, and the sharing of talent, land, and resource.
