Home, tired. I can move my chair back without crushing a dog. Weird.
Bumba!
My daily bike ride takes me past the Hatch Shell, a bandshell on the banks of the Charles River right near downtown Boston. There’s almost always something happening there in the summer; classical concert, yoga, dance lessons, and on Friday evenings it’s Free Friday Flicks.
They’re usually children’s movies, or at least family friendly. Tonight it was Monsters vs. Aliens. And there’s a guy (a DJ from the radio station that sponsors the event, I think) who keeps the crowd entertained with trivia questions until it’s time for the movie to start. I’ve only been by there a couple times at the right time. The questions usually seem to be cartoon related, as is appropriate to the likely audience. Be the first to call out an answer, and he calls you up front. Once he’s got seven people up there, the game changes. He names a category, and each player in turn has to name something that fits the category. If you repeat an answer, or take more than five seconds, you’re out. Last one standing, wins.[sup]*[/sup]
This week, the category was TV shows with one-word titles. (Cheers for example, and the Hatch Shell is only a few hundred yards from the bar where the exterior shots were filmed.) The easy ones go quickly, but players start dropping out. When it was down to two guys, the answers took an interesting turn.
Californication
Weeds
Dexter
Oz
Free Friday Flicks may never be the same, again.
Last week I had no idea what I’d wandered into, and wound up winning. The category was cartoon dogs or cats. I got a t-shirt. Does anyone here wear a medium?
Up, caffeinated, off to irk. 2 days till vacation.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. Today is pool time followed by dindin with friends all of which shall be enjoyable. Since I know all these people I suppose that lessens the probability of axe-murder but one never knows for one hunnert percent sure does one?
Robot that sounds like it’d be fun!
Happy Sattidy Y’all!
Whew! Finally a minute to sit down!
Scruffy woke me at 5 to go out. So I took her out and went back to bed. More barking at 6, so up then back to bed. Same at 7, but I stayed put. Sometime after 7:30 I let her out again. What’s it like to sleep in - can anyone tell me??
**FCD **and daughter are at the boat for a day on the water. There’s not going to be much wind and I didn’t feel like just motoring around in the heat, so I’m doing laundry. Load 3 is in the washer, half of 2 is on the dryer and the other half is on the lines with load 1. Dishes have been done. Plus I made up some food for the sailors. Outside planters are watered. Kitchen is semi-tidy. Bed has been stripped, and since it’s still cool out, the windows are open. I figure I’ll have to close them before noon, but I’m loving it right now.
I need to get the new battery installed in the van then take the trash and recycling to the convenience center. I should also run the vacuum cleaner thru here fast… except our cleaning crew is coming on Monday, and they need to earn their fee, right?
I’ve got one more load of laundry, and I need to flip the mattress and make the bed. I should also thaw something for supper. Or we could do weenies on the grill. Decisions, decisions. With luck, I’ll get some knitting time in there, too. I started a new baby afghan - it will be soooooo soft!!
Meanwhile, I think I need a beverage. I’s thirsty!
Happy Saturday!
bump to brag about my Rosebuds
Polly Polaris has cleaned the pool and the daily mornin’ scoopin’ of various critters outta the pool has been accomplished. Plus brekkies done been et. Cereal, banana and toast. I stuck some beerverages and sodas in a cooler and iced 'em. Believe it or not, da bear is in more of a soft drink as opposed to beerverage mood. I know, shocking right?
Oh and as promised to Bumba and anyone else who may be curious…
Mary’s Hominy and Corn Casserole (So named because, well, Mary is the one who gave me the recipe)
2 15-1/2 oz. cans hominy (the sorta large cans)
2 15-1/2 oz. cans whole kernel corn (see can comment above)
1 4 oz. can chopped green chilies (I prefer the ones with heat but if you are inclined toward the mild, have at it. I won’t judge, you wimp!)
1 8 oz. container sour cream (Hey, sour cream! How can this be bad then!)
1 8 oz. pkg shredded Mexican cheese (the kind with peppers in it, OLE!)
Drain the hominy and corn and mix with the green chiles. Add the sour cream. Mix it some more cause otherwise it’ll be all ick.
Dump half of the mixture into a three quart casserole dish sprayed with your desired brand of that veggie spray stuff (no name brands used for fear of being hunted down and sued for copyright infringement.). Top with half of the package of cheese (OLE!)
Dump the other half of the mixture on top of the cheese (OLE!) and top with the rest of the cheese (OLE!)
If’n you want to purty it up a little more sprinkle a little paprika on top.
Also, if onions float yer boat, fine chop some and throw it in the hominy/corn/sour cream/chile glop. I’ve done it both ways and personally, onion lurver though I am, I think it’s better without the onion and I’m a good cook so that oughta count for sump’n.
Put in a preheated 350 degree oven for about half an hour. Just make sure the cheese is all melty.
If you got all the way to the put in oven part without readin’ the recipe first and you have to wait for your oven to heat up, then shame on you! You should know by now to read a recipe all the way through first.
And that, folks, is Mary’s Hominy and Corn Casserole. Mary is the wife of a retired Episcopal Priest and qualifies as a bonafide church lady so y’all know this is good based on that fact alone.
ETA: Rosie forgot to say earlier but the little rosebuds are teh keeeeeeyoooooote!
Mornin’ y’all! I’m up, I have coffee, the dogs have been out and fed, and now I’m just kind of surfing the web.
We’re going to a friend’s house for dinner and 99 tonight, but I’ve got some erranding to do today before we go there.
I’m sorry Swampy dearest, but hominy is just plain…ewww. I don’t think think you’ll ever convince me otherwise.
Missy, I’m sorry about your friend. I meant to address that yesterday.
It sprinkled a little last night. I think we have a chance for sprinkles today and tomorrow and then the sun is supposed to come out again on Monday.
I think I’m going to read the news now. Doesn’t that sound fun?
Today is Friday for me so I only get a one-day weekend this week. And the sun is bright, the weather like 80 degrees and my bike is just inside my view on my security feed.
<throwing a tantrum> It’s not fair, it’s not fair, it’s not fair -------- waaaaaaa!!!
Last load of laundry is in the washer, and the first load I hung out is almost dry. I’ve still got the windows open, enjoying every second I can till it gets too hot. I really need to go flip the mattress, but of all the chores I hate, that’s right up there with scrubbing the shower.
Oh, kopek, grow up!
Big sissy baby!
Just had a thought - if I flip the mattress and make the bed, I could take a nap. hmmmmmm…

Work work work work work

And the last load is on the line. Huzzah!
Time to flip the mattress, then knit.
I’m feeling excessively blah today. I think it’s time for a nap.
I have been shopping today with a friend. She is clearly a bad influence. I have come home with some lacy knickers which you don’t need to see, a black velvet jacket and a pair of shoes. I had to take refuge in a wine bar afterwards to recover from the expense!
**FCD **is home. Bed is made. Some laundry has been brought in and folded. I’ll take more down in about an hour - there’s still some dampness out there.
Cute jacket, BooFae! Is it for a particular occasion or just because you’re worth it?
Ooooh, cute rosebuds, rosie. They’re really getting big.
There are approximately one bazillion OSU alums, Missy, so you may yet regain the opportunity to cheer the Bucks on. And hey, you could probably find an OSU alum gathering near you in the fall and go join in. I’m sure they’ll accept you even if you never actually attended.
Bye the way…I’m calling dibs on the next MMP. I have Ohio State Fair stories AND pictures.
Posted swampy’s recipe to the blog. Am waiting for Bumba’s. ![]()
FCM: you know our friend Rue is a knotting expert…
Friends have moved on to their next stop.
Wish we could have had more time together.
Am tired… Maybe a nap will help?
Hugs.
GT
Oh MOOOOOOM like BooFae ever needs an excuse to buy a cute jacket or some shoes!
In from the pool and showered. I have had enough sun. The others will be in soon enough cause it’s cloudyin’ up and lookin’ rainified. Hope, hope, hope! When all are in, showered and purtified is shall be cocktail time (ok, beerverages were consumed by the pool but that does not count!). Cocktail time shall consist of martinis (dirty for those who wish) and vegetative munchies. This shall be followed by dindin which I have outlined in posts above for those of you keepin’ up. Oh and Taters I guarantee you’d like this hominy/corn casserole. All the flavors combine so well that everyone who has ever told me he/she despises hominy liked it.
Of course, being the good host with the most that I am, when I came in from the pool, I peeled and chopped some N.O.T., onions and green peppers to make Friggin’ Good N.O.T. just in case I need a casserole substitute. What? If’n they don’t get eaten tonight they will get eaten tomorrow cause food must be had on a daily basis. So There!
Ok, gotta go check on the poolside folk.
Later Y’all!
Wow! It really is old home week around here! ** Bumba**! It’s good to see you!
It’s good to see yu too, Taters!
Bumbalicious!!! How the heck ya been, dude??
I’ve been pretty good, considering that since you quit coming to Skippy’s place, I’ve had to come back over here to stalk you.

Howdy Bumba
Howdy, Swampy

Doggio!
Interesting recipe Swampy. My recipe, which was called Howmany Casserole in the original cook book, goes as follows: (leaving out a lot of words)
Howmany Casserole
For four people, assemble;
1 lb ground beef
½ lb mild cheddar cheese
2 (#2) cans golden hominy
1 (#2) can tomato sauce
An onion
Grate the cheese. Sauté the meat in butter, (this is the original recipe, remember), and onions.
Season fairly profusely with;
Salt
Pepper
Paprika
Garlic powder
Oregano
Cumin
& a touch of cayenne.
Drain off all the fat from the meat. Add the tomato sauce (to the meat)
In your casserole dish, place layers of hominy, meat-sauce mixture, and grated cheese. Repeat.
Bake at 350 for 20 minutes, or until cheese is thoroughly melted.
As I recall this is really good impoverished student fare, but Wifey doesn’t like hominy, so I don’t make it anymore. ![]()
BTW, my recipe for Toomany Casserole involves hamburger (and onion & garlic), cheddar cheese, chilis, and noodles. Assemble and season just about as you would the Howmany Casserole, only you can leave out the oregano.
These recipes are from an old, old book called The Impoverished Students’ Book of Cookery, Drinkery, & Housekeepery, My copy is so old the price on the cover is $1.50!
Back to work!
