Happy National Dachshund Day!

The rest of the pets I have will be cremated. I will save the ashes and, so to speak, take them with me to the grave. One of my aunts did that. She was dying of cancer and her elderly cat was ill, and needed a lot of care. My cousins, her kids, had the cat euthanized and cremated, and when she passed shortly after the ashes were place in her coffin. I’m not even sure if she knew the cat was gone though.

Around here it’s hard to find a full dachshund to adopt. They are so popular, I was lucky to find Mauser.

One of my brothers had the winning ticket (out of maybe 1500) for a Dachsie puppy being raffled at a hockey game. Miniature black & tan. My dad was being careful to warn him, saying mom will never allow another dog (we already had a boxer).

But, naturally after we brought her home that night, turns out nobody on the planet can say “No” to a Dachsie puppy, pretty sure on that. “Oh, isn’t she cute!”

Love that story. When I was being shown how to use the site Petfinder a Doper from Oregon I think showed me a puppy that was available. If I could have gone that far I would have. It;s parents were both registered dachshunds but it wasn’t because one parent was long hair and the other was smooth. So it was just slightly fluffy, with the most gorgeous golden color. I can still remember how beautiful it was, and Im sure it found a fine forever home.

Nothing but Pit Bulls and mutts around here. I’d take another Doxie if I could find one. Ain’t gonna happen…

The wife’s niece has six of them and her sons have them, too. Whenever we go over there and knock on the door, it’s mayhem in there as they all go ballistic at the same time. They’re nice dogs once they calm down, though. Dachshunds are not just cute dogs; they’re relentless killers of rabbits, mice, squirrels, etc.

I got the photos and videos to prove it! Hence the Crew’s moniker ‘Killer Elite’.

Hey! We’ve got 2 new pit mutts and they’re awesome! One is Pit/Aussie Shepherd/Aussie Cattle and the new kid is Pit/Staffordshire (another Pit)/Shar Pei and Chihuahua. Both couldn’t be sweeter, gentler or more playful.

I have a tall dachshund.

Ummm. Maybe.

(He happens to be tail-less)

There’s a classic children’s book about a dachshund named Noodle. Maybe that inspired him?

After Max was gone, we’ve decided we won’t have another. I really miss him. But the arthritis in my knees is getting worse, and it wouldn’t be fair to the dog.

Sweet man.

I call Dobermans “Tall Trixies”

Oh my God, that could be a picture of my Mauser!!!

On the outside chance you haven’t already seen this old meme…

That could’ve been the inspiration, but doubtful as I don’t think many people in China have seen that book. A number of my neighbors have named their critters with English names. There’s one tiny little furball, midnight black, name Andy. He’s barely bigger than my fist, no telling what number of breeds is in his mix, and he’s so ugly he’s cute. And totally friendly. But Noodle is still my favorite, mostly because of the name, but also because of the humongous smile, and the way he bounces when he walks, not to mention the attention hog he is when everyone’s hanging out in the parking lot.

I haven’t seen that. And that looks very much like my beloved Trixie.

She was prettier, though.

Blackie was our dachshund when I was a kid. As you might guess, he was black, but also short coat, full-sized (seems like I see mostly minis these days.)

My dad disliked dogs, but would travel for work for weeks at at time. One time my mom got Blackie while he was in Mexico for an extended trip. Mom didn’t drive, so we took the CTA bus to and from the seller’s. By the time my dad got home, I guess we kids were too attached for him to make us get rid of the dog.

Altho Blackie was the runt of the litter, he grew plenty big - 30# as I recall. I remember a man on the street saying he looked like a “sooner dog” - like he’d sooner lie around in front of the radiator than do much of anything right. He had that right! Blackie would follow the sun as it came thru the windows, or move from radiator to radiator. Not much sillier looking than a dachshund sitting up to beg!

We had him put down when I was in HS. My mom was too upset to carry him into the vet’s, so I had to. You always keep a soft spot in your heart for your first dog…

Blackie is a sweet memory it sounds like.

Ours was pretty fearless, and while otherwise ordinarily very chill and docile she became very protective when larger dogs were in the area, it was comical to see a small dog do that.

She enjoyed sunbathing whenever possible, always positioning herself to take full advantage of the suns rays for maximum effect. One time I heard the rattle of a big 18 wheeler diesel engine idling in the street and his horn honking. After a few minutes I finally got up to see what was going on and looked out the window. She was sitting in the middle of the road! Completely oblivious to stopping traffic, just sitting there enjoying the warmth, refusing to budge.

The doxie wiggle!

I love that the AKC breed standard for dachshunds says they are “bold to the point of rashness.”

A few years ago, I put all 5 out for the nightly potty call and there was a coyote in the yard. Trixie was getting attacked. Doxie took on the coyote, at great risk and injury to himself and likely saved the 3 other smaller dogs. Only dog not injured was Hickory, who was just a puppy and was freaking out by the back door.

That Doxie was a Hero.
