There’s a similar story from Serbia. A dachshund rushed out to save a 10 yr old girl who was being mauled by a mastiff. Leo, the dachshund, died from his injuries, and the city put up a statue to him in the children’ park:
Leo was A Good Boy!
A very Good Boy!
Okay, who is chopping onions in here?
Indeed. Their intrepid nature and loyalty are two of the reasons we love them so hard.
Far from being on the same level as fighting off a coyote or a mastiff, I’ll never forget a particular day when Lewis was about 6 months old. He was a very small dog and never weighed more than 11 lbs. We were wandering around the place and he followed me as I crossed over the dam of my pond. Then he went off on his own, sniffing on the far side of the pond.
I lingered to look at undergrowth below the dam, then walked slowly back toward the house. Suddenly, I heard a “splooosshh!!” behind me. I turned to see Lewis, who’d never been in a body of water in his life, swimming like a determined little otter to catch up to me. And it’s not a tiny pond! He could have easily run back around and crossed over on the dam, but no – that was much too indirect a route for him. He wasn’t going to give me any chance to get away!
Glad there were no eagles on patrol in that moment.
I still tear up to think of it. Silly bugger.
Awesome Doxie story, @Gatopescado. And I’m very sorry to learn about Trixie, too. @carrps, Max was a darling. I know you miss him every day, as I do Lewis.
I call Dachshunds “Earth Otters”, and Otters, “Water Dachshunds”
When their ears are pinned back, dachshunds look just like otters. Or baby seals. It amazes me how big they can get their eyes when they want you to give them what you’re eating. Our Luc used to give us “baby seal eyes.” Such a little beggar.
Yep. It’s so hard to live without them, but the memories and the shared stories keep them alive for us. @Aspenglow , I can just picture little Lewis kicking and paddling like mad. Most doxies hate the water!
I think they are psychotic er, psychic, too. Smart. It was so long ago I don’t recall the particulars but our doxxie was not allowed to beg at the dinner table, I remember that, not very often anyway. That’s why I remember one episode so vividly. I think I was the last one eating at the table, everybody was out of the kitchen. We must have had BLT’s. for dinner. I had a couple pieces of bacon left on my plate I was enjoying, and for some reason, I didn’t hear anything, no whining, but for some reason I decided to look under the table, and knew what would happen. Keep in mind I didn’t really know dogs like bacon.
Guess who is sitting there with that “I might die immediately without bacon you know” expression? No begging or anything, just a very polite body language the way they sit, and request that, you know hey, a piece of that bacon would be mighty fine … I gave her the rest, I knew it was the right thing to do. Con artists all …
Every snack you make, every bite you take, everything you bake I’ll be watching you.
Ok, I can’t wait.
This little fella comes home with me mid-July. Tentatively named Oliver.
I’m very excited!
Love the flippers er…I mean paws.
LOL, I know. They’re adorable, but it’s probably more just the lens angle. In other pics, they don’t look quite so… flipperish.
Great markings. What a sweet face!
But we know the dachshund cunning lurking behind the cuteness.
LOL, that we do.
The breeder sent along a video of him playing with his litter mates and he seems quite bold and assertive. Sweet, too, but I can already see a willful streak. Made me think about naming him Buster.
I love the name Buster! It’s great that you can seem some of his behavior before he comes to live with you. You need to name your dogs, but once you get to really know them, you can always think of better names than the first one you came up with.
Yeah, I insisted on it, actually. I was burned once by a breeder looking to get rid of a problem dog. It was heartbreaking, because I’ve never given up on an animal before and she did a ton of damage before I reached the point of rehoming her. I’m just glad a rehoming option was available and it was a good situation for her. But I won’t repeat the experience. She killed 3 of my beloved cats.
I’m partial to the name Buster, too, but no one else in my circle is. No final decisions, because I agree with you that it’s best to make lifetime naming decisions after spending time with the pup.
Can’t wait to get my mitts on him!! Dachshunds are just the best.
I’m really happy for you. We’ve decided we’re too old for a new dog, so I have to live vicariously through everyone else.
Thank you!
I do understand where you’re coming from re a new dog. This one will probably be my last, too. So I was super picky about which one.
I’ll be happy to share as many pics as you can stand!
Be forewarned. I can stand a lot!
Oh, goodie!!
