IMAX? Wow I hadn’t thought of that. That could be worth the long extra drive instead of seeing it locally.
My brother-in-law convinced me that seeing the IMAX version would be worth waiting the extra day for.
Ah, there you are. Couldn’t remember your screen name. :smack:
Apparently I won’t have to wait until Friday to be a zombie.
I am very excited as well. At last it’s here! I’ve seen the trailer on the Internet and it actually gives me chills, especially the shots of Hermione dancing with Viktor, and Harry racing the dragon on his broomstick.
Man I love these stories.
One thing I was surprised about is that John Williams (who scored Oscar nods for the first and third HP films) did not write the music for this one (understandably, since he’s had a really busy year). Instead, Patrick Doyle (who writes the music for Ken Branagh’s films) is doing the score.
I have the score. Patrick Doyle really did an amazing job.
I’ll probably wait a week, fan of the books though I am. I’ve seen the rabid pre-teen fan contingent, I suspect they will be there in full force every night the first week, and I have little doubt they’re prepared to turn to cannibalism if they run out of popcorn
Seriously, though, I hate long lineups and huge crowds.
Still, I expect this to be the best of the lot. None of the movies can capture the books, but I think this one has the best chance. Goblet of Fire is the most action-oriented of the series, with the least philosophizing and the most zapping things. Hollywood does that very well.
The only brilliant lines that need to be delivered are Lord Voldemort’s, and they made a fine choice in Ralph Fiennes for that.
My only worry is that we’ll soon have Draco/Lucius/Snape syndrome with Voldemort – a pretty guy playing the Lord of Insufficient Light means more sympathy for the bad boys.
I suspect we shall soon see rabid Voldemort fans, with Voldemort fansites, and erotic Voldemort fan stories and drawings and paintings. Threads on Mugglenet will be entitled, “Voldemort – misunderstood?” Or, “Was Harry wrong to defend himself from Voldemort?”
Hopefully, they have him under too much makeup to be recognized.
So what do you guys think, should I read GOF first, then see the film? Or is it better to see the film first, then enjoy the added shadings/details I find in the book?
I’ve read the first three books after seeing the films, which I enjoyed very much. I liked that the books gave me a deeper understanding of the characters that intrigued me in the movies – so in a way, I got to experience the plots twice.
(Usually people are disappointed by films if they’ve read the books first; I’m just trying to save myself the angst!)
Thoughts?
I saw the first three movies first, and was really disappointed because they spoiled the surprises at the end of the first three books, but without nearly as good a setup.
But if you weren’t disappointed the way you didn’t, I don’t see that it would make a difference.
Read the book. The book is very long, I think the longest of the series. Do you know if they “dropped” anything to make it fit, or did they just tighten things up?
It’s the second-longest, after Order of the Phoenix. And they certainly did drop stuff from it:
Gone are the House-Elves – not just SPEW, but they rewrote the story to remove Winky and Dobby altogether.
Gone is most of the World Cup, although the most crucial scenes have been thrown in.
Gone are the Dursleys – though the actors playing them begged the director to write them into a brief scene.
Gone is the weighing of the wands and the re-appearance of Ollivander.
Gone is Ludo Bagman – completely, totally, utterly.
Naturally, Peeves puts in no appearances. I’m going to miss his scenes in Order of the Phoenix :(
Pardon me while I scream about Ralph Fiennes being Lord Voldemort.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Here is a list of the IMAX theaters that are showing it. The ones that are opening it late (at the bottom of the list) will mostly be about two weeks late.
I kind of wish I was going to see it in IMAX. But, it’s too far away. Oh, well. I’m still excited as hell!!
I know they couldn’t film everything. But I would have really liked to see:
Mr. Weasley’s visit to the Dursleys to pick up Harry.
TGOF is probably my favorite of the books.
I would’ve liked to seen that as well. It was hilarious just reading it from the book. It would’ve been really cool if they filmed it right.
SQUEE! I’m excited! My two closest friends and I are going to the midnight viewing on Thursday night/Friday morning. 12:01, baby! We’re dressing up and everything! All this recent excitment over the movie has even gotten my brother reading the books, something I never thought was possible.
I know I’ll be mad about everything they cut out, but it looks like what is there will be really good.
And I lurrrrrrve all those good looking boys in the movie, so even if the content isn’t very good the boys will be!
I cannot wait!
Mom bought me a ticket for my birthday present, and I might even meet up with some people I met on LJ and have them come with me.
From what scenes I saw online, it looks great.
I read some early reviews in the paper this morning. One funny thing I saw was that in the credits at the end it mentioned that “No dragons were harmed during the making of this movie”
Got our tix, kids and I are going to the midnoc showin tonoc!
Yay! (I hope I can stay awake…)
