Has anybody here ever been banned from a forum/website?

Wow! That IS an accomplishment, seeing as I used to think AICN Talkback was the most subliterate forum on the Web. That was before YouTube comments came along.

I’ve never been banned, but I was rejected during the registration process for “not meeting membership standards” at an animation forum. There was a free text field that asked me to briefly summarize my life history, which I assumed was just a weed-out-the-bots filter, so gave the pithy reply “I was born and I haven’t died yet”. Apparently the mods felt I wasn’t serious enough to make meaningful contributions to endless rants about how Cartoon Network is racist for canceling Toonami and how only losers prefer dubbed to fansubbed anime.

Yep, just once, and it was SO worth it. A particularly obnoxious poster (with whom I’d had an on-going debate on the topic at hand) made a very hostile and uncalled for personal attack (doing it in such a way as to just skirt the letter of the law) and I used what I knew would be my last post to tell her exactly what I thought of her in no uncertain terms. (I got quite a few supportive PMs from other site members, too…this person had a pattern of being rude and of goading anyone she couldn’t beat into submission into violations so she could get them banned:rolleyes:)

And then, soon after, I went back under another name and continued the debate…driving her absolutely BATSHIT because not only did she still have to defend her position against a relentless and skilled opponent but she knew it was ME but couldn’t prove it. :stuck_out_tongue: Was sweet.

Many years ago I was banned from the Darwin Awards MB during a huge kerfuffle. I made the mistake of pointing out the habit the bosswoman had of contradicting herself during the skirmish. One of the ousted started his own message board that I was quite active on for a while, but now the owner is persona non grata and the heifer in charge is too similar to the DAB witch for comfort.

And I was banned for trolling newsmax. It was my fault, entirely, and a heckuva lot of fun while it lasted.

Once, accidentally. Turns out one forum I was on was hacked while I was on vacation, and while they were banning the guy’s 50 or so accounts and IP addresses, I accidentally got banned. Luckily, I had some friends among the mods who noticed that something was wrong, and I was back on by the end of the day.

Not that I’m aware of. I created a couple of sock puppets a couple of times that got trashed, but my core identity has always emerged unscathed.

It happened. I’m kind of surprised. This has never happened. Usually I’m the good kid who sucks up to the mods.

Have any of you guys ever been banned, on other boards?

Is it against board policy to say the name of the site where I was banned, or am I allowed?

Oh, do tell! Because if you got banned, there must be an interesting story to it.

It was on a website where they posted an article about a bunch of things, one of which was about soldiers being given mascara and Cosmo magazines. One poster got her panties in a bunch about how this represents how women soldiers are viewed primarily through the lens of mom/wife/girlfriend, instead of as real people, and I guess it’s enforced gender roles. I posted a disagreement, and got a snarky, “Can you read?” comment. So I posted back something like, “Good feminazi, you get a cookie if you manage to use the word patriarchy in your next post,” and then I was banned. And my post was de-voweled so that it couldn’t offend anyone’s delicate sensibilities further.

Forgot about this thread! Sorry.

Anyway since everyone else is naming names, I’ll name mine…it was Jezebel.

Freudian Slit, I merged your OP into a not-yet-zombified thread on the same topic.

twickster, MPSIMS moderator

Freudian Slit: I see your point… let’s see, I’m a woman serving in some dangerous place where you must forego nearly all of the little things that as a woman you may have enjoyed in the past… no, don’t send me mascara and Cosmo… I want something utilitarian and functional.

Do you think it was the word “feminazi” that caused in the banning? (This is a serious question.)

I know a much better way to deal with spam posts that would make everyone else happy, and no one is smart enough to have ever done it.

When a poster has under say 30 posts and puts a link in a reply, the post would appear but no link, instead a <reserved–check for this later> would replace the link till a mod checks it out for spam.

Now, no needless bans and the spammer will simply leave because the message is not delivered. No innocents ever be banned wrongly, and it is much less work than watching all the posts.

Is that feature available in vBB? If not, the suggestion is probably a non-starter. And even if it is, the admins, IME, tend not to like turning features on and off willy-nilly.

For awhile I posted on a popular “alternative medicine” board.

First I was banished to the “debate” section for not being sufficiently supportive of rabidly insane views*. After that I stuck to refuting anti-vax preachings in a “vaccination debate” forum (in the face of increasingly vicious personal abuse). Between me and one other evidence-based poster we had the antivax nutters on the defensive, which was so intolerable that they banned us from the entire board.

I’ve since discovered that this is their standard M.O. for coping with skeptics.

I understand that the same thing regularly happens to rational people who post on some of the popular autism and mommy boards.
*in accordance with the theory of “crank magnetism”, people who believe in ear candling and cheap 100% effective herbal cancer cures, also are highly likely to believe in chemtrails, zapping internal parasites with handheld “zappers”, and secret alliances of Illuminati, Jews and Giant Lizards that are conspiring to rule the world.

Yeah, I think it is. I mean, I know they’re a lot more humorless than people here. I’d make a remark like that without thinking twice–I know I might get a roll eyes or a Mod warning if I go too far, but in general people are pretty good about the humor. I thought I’d probably just get a lot of, “I hate that people are using what they did in 1940s Europe to demonize us.” Though I got that response, too.

I’m probably going to get banned any day now from a “sexism” community on LiveJournal. It’s getting harder and harder to not respond to the recreational outrage and group pity-parties of “OMG, this commercial totally stereotypes women!” Which is followed by endless soothing back-patting. The word “patriarchy” in particular sets me off.

Any day now, I’m sure I’ll post something like, “You know, it’s simple economics: they wouldn’t make ads like this if women didn’t respond positively to the message and imagery, so don’t blame the ‘patriarchy’, blame other women.” And then I’ll be booted.

Yeah…It’s herd mentality times a thousand. Every time there’s an article about plus sized models, there comments are always, “We need more women like that–she’s gorgeous, I feel so bad for the poor skinny models who don’t look like this,” and then a barrage of, “Um, you know she’s not plus sized, right? she’s smaller than like everyone I know.” And then there’s the rape definition that’s so large that it encompasses everyone and if you don’t agree, you need to talk to some rape survivors.

I have no idea why I read it–well, Jezebel does have entertaining light fare, but it’s scary there.

I still can’t get over being banned. I don’t think I’ve even been warned here. It was a real woah feeling.

I got kicked off YouTube for copyright violation. How they honed in on me I’ll never know, since my view counts were so paltry compared to the other millions of people who violate copyright on there.

I don’t think my main account was banned on the starwars.com boards, but my sock puppet was. I joined the chorus on how poorly the boards were moderated: If any subject has ever been discussed in the past, new threads get locked and you’d be referred to threads that were years old with thousands of posts. Anyway, I just got disgusted and said I wasn’t bothering with the board anymore, and got a sarcastic reply from one of the mods, so I set up a sock puppet account using a vulgar, insulting variation of the mod’s username. I didn’t really troll in the traditional sense, I just posted normal responses to threads just to see how long before anyone noticed and banned me. Took about five days.
