Has anybody here ever been banned from a forum/website?

I didn’t know YouTube was banning users for watching habits as opposed to uploading things. Why don’t they just take down the copyrighted material? How is the viewer supposed to know what is copyrighted, or whether there’s a license agreement in place with YouTube so that the material is available on YouTube legally? If I may ask, was the explanation any more detailed than “copyright violation”?

If I’m reading Harvey’s post accurately, he had posted some material on YouTube which had very low view counts – That is, he was the one who put it up, but few people looked at it. However, what he put up was deemed to have violated someone’s copyright, and they banned him for it.

Me, I have two: I was pre-emptively banned from the old Left Behind Message Board, apparently for being an outspoken liberal Christian here at SDMB. When I went to register, I found that my identity was rejected before I ever made a single post there.

And I made three (accurate) edits on Wikipedia before being banned from editing there as a vandal (by an admin with an oh-so-hip username). In fairness, I was using AOL as my ISP at the time, and it may well have been another AOL user who was the vandal, since we all shared a dynamic IP address range.

Oh, yes. :smack:

Correct. The final straw was when my six part re-edit of the Star Wars Holiday Special, with subtitles, drew the ire of LucasFilm.

I was banned from a message board for acting like the early-teen jerk that I was (10+ years ago). Turns out posting a link to a softcore porn picture of a seriously morbidly obese woman isn’t appreciated by many people. Who knew?

While I do think the reactions were funny, I was obviously being a troll that day and deserved what I got.

I’ve never been banned. I have personally banned about a dozen or so people from the CDV (German game publisher) messageboards however, but it’s been many years since I stopped moderating there.

[aside]I entered this thread hoping to see “BANNED” underneath at least one user’s name, with no luck. Does this make me a bad person?[/aside]

I don’t remember ever being banned from any internet boards, but I do know I’ve probably come pretty close. Back in the dial-up BBS days, I sysoped my own board, and we local sysops formed a sort of community, with us and our users having monthly picnic/BBQ/hangouts at the local park. There were some sysops who were “too cool” to come join in on our fun, and when my fledgling BBS got ranked above one particularly cool sysop’s in some local BBS guide, I found my user account on his board was suddenly banned. He even paid one of my users to trash my board with a trojan. After I got everything back up, I didn’t even bother banning any of them – though their file upload privileges were revoked. It was an amusing scenario.

Your lucky you didnt kill us all by permanently damaging the space time continum by messing around with that thing!

That’s actually sort of related to the problem I’ve encountered with “single-topic” boards. Over the years I’ve registered on several single-topic boards that were related to subjects of interest to me (say, bass guitar forums, band forums, fetish forums), and I’ve ended up never sticking around on them for more than a few months. The problem is that with a single topic, there are only so many things you can talk about before everybody starts repeating themselves.

I was once banned from #### for saying, “We, Japs…”.
Evidently, “Jap” was considered considered a banworthy pejorative, even though I myself am Japanese.

Heh, depending on what chat room it was, it could have been me who banned you. And wouldn’t that be a full circle of life thing or some such?

I can say that I have never been banned from anywhere, only because when I misbehave it’s usually on Usenet. Also because until a few years ago, I was normally the banner (ban-er?) not the bannee.

I have been warned, though, here.

I probably nearly got banned from one website. As far as I could tell, the mod/owner of the board was a control freak plain and simple. After several e-mails of the “Tsk, tsk. We just don’t do that here” variety I decided to head for greener pastures. I believe that was around the time I discovered the Dope, where in my many years here, have received nary a “Tsk” from a mod. Imagine that!

Ah. The ever lovely whale to website. Always good for a laugh if nothing else.

Banned? Me? Nooooo…

Well, ok. Just from every single board I’ve ever participated on, without exception.

You’re a 99er, and it doesn’t say BANNED under your name :dubious:

:stuck_out_tongue:

It doesn’t… anymore.
