Has there ever been a Miami Dopefest? Should there be?

I was just curious if one of these mythic Dopefests has ever been held in Miami or South Florida, and if there are even enough Dopers down here to make one happen. Just a thought. Any other South Floridians on here?

I seem to recall one a couple of years ago. Miami’s favorite Doper couple, Geobabe and UncleBill are/were in the area, but are relocating to the Atlanta 'burbs. Don’t know who else is there, but you’re more than welcome at the FloriDope outside of Ocala in April. No one (that I know of) is actually in Ocala, but it seemed like a nice place to meet.

When and where? I lived in Gainesville for a long time, so I know I’d have a place to stay up there, and I know I’m going to be driving up to South Carolina for a wedding in April. I’d love to stop by the FloriDope if the timing works out.

That would be my going-away DopeFest. Sat, April 24 at Rainbow Springs State Park. Unless when I go check it out this weekend, it comes up completely unsatisfactory…

I plan to arrive around 11 and claim some tables and get a grill going. Everyone is supposed to bring a lunch - either something to toss on the grill or a PB&J or whatever - plus something to share - again, whatever. I’m going to bring a cooler full of ice, some bottled water, and plastic cups. Alcohol is a no-no, but family and friends are invited to join.

There’s a thread about it somewhere, and I’ll start a new one closer to the time. It’d be great if you could come! I’m looking forward to meeting a bunch of FloriDopers before I flee to become a MAD!

UncleBill and I tried several times to organize a Miami Dopefest, but were never successful. The one a couple years ago ended up being just the two of us; another couple was supposed to join us, but had some sort of emergency and couldn’t make it at the last minute. Figures now that we’re gone there’s another Doper in the area wanting to get together.

I wish you better luck than we had if you decide to try to organize something–it seems nobody wants to go to Miami, not even other Floridians. I think too many people saw “Scarface” and think they’re still mowing people down in the streets.
