Since I dumped my cache to update my virus program the other day, I have to log on each time I visit SDMB. I tried to re-register using my original user name but the server still recognizes me. What can I do to avoid having to log on each time?
On the main menu page, http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/
check at the bottom that you are logged out. If not, you may just have a corrupted cookie. Logout now and login again.
If that’s not it, you should go to your profile and be sure “Store Username & Password in browser memory” is still set to Yes.
If it is, go to your browser options, advanced settings, and be sure you still have cookies enabled.
After that, …
It doesn’t hurt to delete the cookie, so that’s actually the first thing you might want to try.
Your virus program may have moved your cookie, so do a file search on your disk for any files named “@boards.straightdope”
There may be more than one, like
“yourname@boards.straightdope[1].txt” and “yourname@boards.straightdope[2].txt”
Then delete them all, so you can start over.
(I’m not sure, but I believe the extra ones accrue when you crash.)
This comes up sometimes but you can correct it by going to the home page & then going to the forums from that page, this causes it to make a cookie right. Won’t happen if you launch right from the forum itself.
Dunno if this is in the FAQ but I hope so.
You should actually be fixed now- one of the absolutely guaranteed ways to get the board to send cookies for your username and password (the ones that keep you “logged on”) is to make a post with a correct username/password pair - as long as you’re accepting cookies, it should update them so that you have the correct settings. If not, is your antivirus software perhaps blocking your cookies or otherwise screwing with them? That’d be the next thing I would check.
Nope, still the same problem, however, I think I do see the problem.
I am running IE, when I open tools, internet options, settings, there is a slider arrow that one can move up to allow more disk space to be used. For some reason, I can move the arrow but it doesn’t change the value in the box. When I try to apply or OK, I get an error message asking me to enter a value between 1 and 0. WTF
Shoulda left well enough alone! Some times I HATE computers!Rant, Rant, Rant.
