Has your taste of doper sensibility let you down? My recent thread in GQ regarding eating yam filled intestines of wild boar is sinking without a trace. Have you got any good examples of completely shite threads that you have started?
Why, yes. I’m presently being keelhauled in the Pit for my views on flying the flag at half-staff. I would say it easily falls into the category of ‘opinions best left unexpressed’.
Thanks Chefguy. It was not what I had expected. It made me laugh though. You have a crap thread with replies. I wish I was that lucky. Mine is just crap.
Well, there was the time I started a thread asking about who designed New England’s ubiquitous three-family 19th-century houses (as in, builders, architects, mail-order houses, who?). I was certain that the subject would be of nearly universal appeal on such a cosmopolitan board – it, um, wasn’t. :smack:
If it’ll make you feel any better, though, I’ll go and see if there’s anything I can possibly say about the yam-filled boar intestines. What the hell is that, anyway, some kind of weird haggis?
Quite awhile back, I started a thread to ask how a person with no knowledge of politics could tell whether he was a liberal or a conservative, democrat or republican, or what-have-you. I got one response that didn’t answer the question, and it disappeared off page 3 in less than 24 hours. So I still don’t know…
I did not expect that this thread would get a lot of attention, but I did think a few people would pop in with an alternative organization with a similar program. Instead someone thought I hadn’t read the link I posted about the organization and why they longer are able to accept donations directly from the website that I linked and explained it for me and then suggested I get on the phone.
FTR the local children’s shelter does not accept greeting card donations and I knew that before I made the OP.
My most current sinker is not too surprising to me, since it was about an obscure computer game. However, my Happy Thanksgiving thread didn’t receive a single response and didn’t even have too many viewings. A lot of my threads seem to slip by unnoticed. I don’t mind too much though, since the Dope is only a hobby.
I thought my Supplemental Thread of almost exactly two years ago was a clever idea, but the reply posts stayed away in droves. Now that the rule against old thread bumping has been modified, maybe I’ll bump it from the murky recesses or something and see if it fares any better.
I always rather liked this crap thread, personally…
God, I’m glad to hear it’s not just me. Most of my threads are stillborn. And those I post to, I’m usually the last to post. So this thread will now be dead.
(I’m thinking of changing my handle to “threadkiller”).
Oh man, I have quite a few. The only one I really remember, however, was this past Generic Day. I suppose I was the only one who was happy about Generic Day.
One day it struck me that there were a surprising number of celebrities with the last name “Moore”.
Was that insight really worth starting an entire thread?
I have a few, mostly of really obscure, technical questions. (That, or really obscure entertainment/work of fiction questions.)
I’m really kind of surprised that the “feasibility of ‘Dr. Strangelove’ long-duration bomb shelters” question didn’t pan out. (Probably if I’d worded it differently, it would have worked. Something like how long would it take to set up one of those shelters, or something. I dunno…)
I was surprised that this thread on Star Wars makeover sank like a stone. I figured that with all the geeks we’ve got here, at leat one of them would post a response, but not even the diehard “Star Wars Rulez, Trek Suxxors!” fans made any comments.
My thread about exploding peaches got a few replies, but I’m not sure how many people actually took notice of it. Or maybe I’m just more fond of that story than other people are.
Then again, most of my threads seem to sink without a trace.
Pretty much every thread I’ve ever started has proven the law of gravity. Quickly.
The only reason “if other authors had written the Lord of the Rings” lasted as long as it did was because I didn’t post to it.
Why do you think I don’t start threads anymore? I got the hint.
I don’t start many threads, so I don’t have any that particularly stand out as bombing, but I would like to attempt to give fishbicycle something to work with. I dug up a couple of quizzes online that might help:
World’s Smallest Political Quiz is very short, and will give a decent answer. 10 short questions.
OKCupid Political Test seems decent, and asks pretty direct questions. About 50 questions.
The Political Compass has been used quite a bit in Great Debates (there’s a long running series of threads covering each of the statements). I think there are 62 statements in this quiz.
Hope that helps!
I just KNEW this one would get alot of laughs. Hmmp! shows what I know.
Actually our doper friend meek made the thread twice as funny as I did.
Out of 184(!!) threads started, 70 have 10 or less posts, 36 have 5 or less, and 8 have one or less. So yeah, I have a few.
Also, since I was bored and can’t sleep, I figured out the mean, median, and mode for my threads too.
Mean: 27 posts
Median: 16 posts
Mode: 8 posts (13)
